NCAA discussing moving Men's Basketball season back a month

Submitted by Lionsfan on

I know, we're in the middle of Hate Week right now, but seeing as Beilein has made March relevant for UM again, I figured I'd share this with the board

Apparently, to avoid competing with football (both pro and college), the NCAA is in preliminary talks to start college basketball in the few weeks after Fall exams and before Christmas.

But the season cannot be condensed because of student-athlete welfare issues, so starting one month later means ending one month later. Conference play would commence after the Super Bowl, allowing more than 50 percent of the season to take place out of football’s long shadow. The NCAA Tournament would move to late April or early May, which is the most radical aspect of the idea.

Seems like a pretty interesting idea, to say the least

I never liked those games between Christmas and New Year as a student. Not sledding back to Ann Arbor to freeze at Chrisler watching Michigan play Northwestern or some shit.

It would still end in April. Also, how is basketball a winter sport? It's played during winter because it's indoors so it can be played when other sports aren't. I don't see anything strange watching people come out of a basketball arena in shorts and t-shirts like I do with hockey in June in Tampa.

How the fuck the NCAA can even attempt to argue that they are all about "amateur" student athletes is just staggering. It's ridiculous. This discussion is 100% purely about maximizing their profits from TV dollars. But no cream cheese bagels (actually changed this year) for the student athletes, that would be unfair.

That shit makes me angry.

100% this, I fucking loathe the time from the end of ncaa basketball to the start of ncaa football when I have to suffer though sports radio talking about nothing but all 162 games of coin flipping, i mean baseball.  This would be Amazing.

I like this idea.  As a fanatical UM football and basketball fan, it essentially extends my season a whole month.  Now I can root for UM football or UM basketball from September through April.  I'll take it.

I never understood why it was called march madness when it is typically at the very end of March and most of it takes place in April. Now March madness would take place in May! Ha

That would also go up against the start of the NBA Playoffs and that may or may not cause some problems for Turner Sports. I'd be interested to here their take as TV rules all these days.

Something to consider - if this were to happen, would they work with the NBA to extend the deadline for underclassmen to declare for the draft? If not, that would cause major issues as the deadline is currently in the last week or so of April, which would be during the tournament.

Move it back about 2 weeks or so. This means that College Basketball Season starts around or after Thanksgiving and right at the end of the CFB regular season. Conference games then start mid-January, within a few days after the CFB Championship Game (which is on Jan. 11th this season). March Madness still is a thing and then The Final Four takes place by April 20th, allowing for college spring sports to enjoy the focus from that point on.
