Marginally OT: Ron English on OSU Running Up Score

Submitted by mgoblue52 on

Ron English thinks it was kosher to have Tressel keep scoring on his Eagles:

"I felt like Jim (Tressel, Buckeyes coach) felt that we were still throwing it so he was going to keep scoring," English said. "That's probably what happened out there. I have to weigh developing our receivers, our quarterbacks and our protection. I always try to do that."

But, he leaves a fair warning for the Vest...

"Every dog has his day. I've had my days. I'm taking mine right now. I'm sure there'll be a day when I'm giving mine again, whether it be here or somewhere else. But I promise you, I'll be back giving my butt-whuppins out, too. It goes around.

"I'll be doing this a long time. I'm 42 years old. I'll be in this profession for 20 more years, so I'll have my day. I don't say that in disrespect. Let me say it again because I respect Jim Tressel. I don't say that I'm (ticked) off at Jim Tressel. I don't stay that that way. I just know that. Nebraska beats us (at Arizona State, 77-28, in 1995 and) we shut them out (19-0) the next year to end their (26-game winning) streak. That's the nature of the beast. The strong survive in this profession. That's just the way it is."

I don't know if Ron will be able to do it with Eastern, but I hope he someday gets the opportunity to roll Ohio State.  He probably has a career of hatred built up for them.

EMU blows and Ron English's EMU teams haven't won a game yet.  Maybe he'll get a position coach job and beat OSU in a bowl game in a couple years because it ain't happening in Ypsi.

He probably should have waited for a better opportunity instead of taking the EMU job. That job is a career killer; they haven't had a winning season since '95. The "whether it be here or somewhere else" part probably indicates that he realizes he doesn't have much of a chance of succeeding there.

Tressel is usually good about this stuff. I don't think he has a huge hatred for EMU and wanted to embarrass them. Hell, when was the last time EMU won a game? Nothing more can embarrass them.

and made it worse. He running Lloydball in a conference that is all offense. His team was woefully I'll prepared to play Saturday. He should be pissed at himself, his staff, and the players. It was a damn embarrassment.
<br>
<br> Ron English is an awful coach who was not going to get a HC job if not for EMU.
<br>
<br>Is it hard to win at Eastern? Yes. But it is not impossible.EMU has won a MAC title.

1.  My team got screwed because OSU ran up the points on us.

2.  I damned angry but I can't tell the press how I really feel because I'd get fined.

3.  I would love to have Tressel's success.

4.  Might respect Tressel's coaching.

5.  Hope to see him privately in a dark alley someday where we could discuss it my way.

6.  I'm young, so I can wait a long time for that day.

I think it was a message on many fronts. To UM, "yeah we can run up the score too". To the pollsters "we blew someone away". ? To the Big Ten "we can score now too and we're not taking the foot off the gas".

Hopefully someone (preferablly UM) knocks them down a peg.

Michigan did what they did without their stating QB for 7/8ths of the game and had a bunch of young guys in where available. Pryor was in a long time. Usually, I don't care about this business. If you don't want it run up, don't play them or get better. In the OSU case though, they left the starters in entirely too long to be tasteful. If you can do it with 2nd and third string guys, that's fine, you shouldn't stop yourself but you don't need to be running trick plays with your first string guys with the game completely out of hand.

I didn't, but I know how to google up a box score, and Pryor has scores all the way through the 3rd quarter, ending with that trick play pass to him so he could score as a receiver.

I didn't watch Mark May, but if the other comment/post was correct, it sounds like the whole stat run-up backfired.

I understand the stat run-up, don't personally agree with it, but understand it.  The trick play I thought was just completely inappropriate and clear show-boating.  It doesn't matter whether the players took over control or if Tressel called it himself.  It was show-boating.

and the press knew it.

Apparently not the people that were calling the game....they were talking about Tressel's brilliance.  Well that's brilliant until some linebacker gets tired of things and then decides that it's only 15 yards....

I can understand keeping your starters in the game for the first half...maybe even part of the third quarter but when you're basically moving the ball at will and are up 25 points, there is no need to run a trick play.  And then you still keep your starters in the game....

Really? As of right now I'd take their offense against our defense over our offense vs their defense. If I were ranking on a scale of 1-10:

OSU D: 9
OSU O: 7 trending toward 8
UM D: 3
UM O: 11

This may change as the B10 season actually plays out, but if a gun were at my head right now and somebody said, "OSU vs UM in a shootout, choose one or die," I'm going with OSU.

does he "roll Ohio State", which is a quote from a previous post. But this is so ridiculous to talk about whether Ohio State is allowed to hang 70 points on somebody. Are you serious? (I'm talking to the person who invented this post in the first place.) Michigan goes out and puts up 65 on BG and of course nobody cares. Why should they? It's Bowling Green. It's EMU. These are teams that would lose to the state Champion High School football teams in places like California, Florida, and Texas. (possibly Ohio too)

But what about "The Game." This is specifically directed to UM fans. Are you guys bored already? I am. 6 in a row is getting pretty "un-rivalry" in my opinion. I know the same thing happened in the 90s when Cooper was coaching OSU, but I just kinda wish things weren't so boring. So when UM comes down to OSU this year, they should do a couple of things: 1) Don't start Forcier. 2) Leave Mike Shaw in Ann Arbor. (2009: 7 touches, 7 yards.) 3) Pray Denard doesn't get concussed.

I'd expect from a fragile ego.  How did we go from a topic that generally is about, "why did OSU run up the score" to starting up the hype machine for the Michigan-OSU game?

In general I thank Tressle for showing one of his trick plays.

Although, maybe that's what he wants us to think, and he did it on purpose so that we're always worried that Pryor can catch too.

I do agree that the Rivalry is boring.  And I think that was a key reason for adding Nebraska and adding a Championship Game to the Big Ten season.  Hope to see you there sometime because beating OSU is so nice I'd love to do it twice.

Unless you refer to some kind of parallel universe, I can't imagine any scenario where a team you coach is in a position to hang 70+ on anyone, let alone the Buckeyes.

Why is Ron English talking about himself? Why not talk about his team? Granted, not much he can say, but he can talk about scoring 20 on OSU, he can talk about learning experience for his guys, etc, etc. Why talk about himself in the way that he does in this instance?

If I were a EMU fan or official, I would be kinda upset. His comments read like he has little to no faith in the team and he will be gone at the first opportunity. Even if EMU sucks and has no hope (which is likely, unfortunately), their head coach shouldn't be implying it to the media.

"I'll be in this profession for 20 more years, so I'll have my day."

In a logically ordered universe, this guy would be coaching DBs and hitting the road aggressively as a recruiter at a school like, um, Michigan.  EMU is a tough row to hoe, but even when adjusting for degree of difficulty I'm not sure he has the legs to coach at the high D1 level.

Semi-related to the OP: In retrospect, does anyone think Rodriguez should've kept English as DC? Not that RR could've predicted the attrition on that side of the ball, but maybe keeping English would've stanched the bleeding a bit and preserved some continuity on defense.

Obviously, I don't know all of the politics behind the scenes, maybe English wouldn't have wanted to stay, anyway. I'm just asking fellow fans for their opinion...

Being a coach (basketball, not football, but situationally can be similar) it is a difficult position to be in when dominating an opponent. I've been on both sides of blowouts, neither are fun. When winning, kids can get lazy, and develop bad habits. When playing backups in a blowout, I keep the O and D simple and concentrate on execution. If I run up the score with my third string vs. their starters, so be it. At some point the onus is on your opposition to stop you. Halfback pass to Pryor, questionable. Off tackle runs for 4th quarter touchdowns are EMU's fault. They're just bad.

It begs the question: What world is he living in?

The world of the being DC of the 2006 Michigan defense?

The world of being DB coach for the 2005 Michigan defense?

How about the world where Ron English is HC of one of the most decrepit college football programs in the modern age?

This has got to be the lamest line of sentences ever uttered by a college football coach.

As fate would have it, Ron English IS HC of EMU, and whether it's Ohio State or Norfolk State on the slate, it's his job to get his players ready to perform.

They may not win. They may get blown out. But it's his players and his football team.   Jesus, take some ownership for what you can control, shut up and play the effing game!

One other thing: since when is everything all about Ron English and his commentary on his future coaching career? The dude has some psycho issues.

I could care less if a team "runs up the score".  What lead is "safe" before letting up? Should NCAA institute a mercy-rule?  Nut up and stop the other team.

This isn't just throwing the ball to get your 2nd team experience.  Tressel had the first team in for three quarters, and up 45-20 late, was running trick plays.

I didn't go to EMU but it was definitely running up the score.  Tressel's intention was to run up the score, and that's bullshit.

Id take ron english back in ann arbor, I didnt mind having a top 10 defense in michigan. He obviously does not fit as a HC quite yet. He jumped the wagon alittle too soon with taking the head coaching job at eastern.
