What was shown in the spring game and these stats from 2011-Borges system seem to indicate his hands are pretty good too. Now that Denard has practiced that step up into the pocket, I think we have a close approximation of QB-oh Noes! coming back into the system. Denard's ability to make his progression faster is going to result in more scrambles, which will force more LB's into Denard run coverage during passing, which should allow someone to separate. |
| 3 weeks 6 days ago | That's easy to figure out |
Michigan's OL does pretty well in the NFL. Carrying the ball 50 times just shows the trend of the OC playcalling, not the players talents. Yes he was tired, and he's a tough guy, but so is Vincent Smith. I think Michigan creates a lot of great people in their football players, so I definitely like all the players everyone is mentioning, and while Michigan always has great RB's, it rarely had an NFL elite back. Also for quite sometime the NFL has been a pass first to setup the run league, so any running back who can dominate multiple years is exceptionally rare. It's also the position taking the most punishment, since every play multiple people are beating on you. Although Wheatley didn't end up on a championship team, he did play quite a while. Michigan RB's are never going to do what they did in College. Maybe Hoke can pull in a Barry Sanders, but I don't think that's required for this offense. Borges is an establigh the pass to setup the run guy, so I expect our next Heismen to come from QB or WR. |
| 4 weeks 1 day ago | I think this is a comparison against Tressel |
I know I'm making an assumption about Brian's intent, but I don't think he was trying to compare coaches specifcally. In other words, this isn't a writeup trying to say, "Hoke is awesome, RR and Lloyd Bad". It's more about and observation of, "hey recently Michigan is grabbing a lot of high quality talent from Ohio, and at a level greater than the previous 10 years. A big factor in this is the change from Tressel to Meyer, and so things might change. The thing that lines up for me is that Michigan only beat Tressel once in the entire time Tressel coached. That happens to line up with a time where Michigan did not bring in talent from Ohio, but Ohio State did. If you go back to a secret ingredient of Bo's success, it was in parallel to his success to recruit Ohio. Something not mentioned by Brian was that Dave Brandon stated that finding a head coach who could recruit the local footprint was critical to team success. I think some of Hoke's choices have trended toward an athlete who "fits" versus overall raw talent measureables. Other factors into this "fit" are academic ability and team/family values. An easy way to find kids who feel they fit in to the Michigan family is to recruit in Michigan and the bordering states. Sure you can find a kid like Ondre Pipkins, who clearly has decided he fits at Michigan, but it's far more likely if you stay within driving distance of the family home. Football, more than any other sport, is a team game, and does require talent to excel, but equally requires a strong team bond. I don't think Meyer is increasing his chances at team bonding by collecting all the prima donnas scattered about the Nation. I'm sure he disagrees in the approach of Hoke, but I'm excited to watch the competition of these style going forward. and I'm clearly biased. Overall Lloyd Carr was a great coach, and a great teacher to his teams. But even he admitted in his retirement press conference that he had "lost it" in regards to staying focused to doing his job at the appropriate level. |

| 5 weeks 12 hours ago | Thanks for all this video effort |
I've really enjoyed the various edited compilations of the Spring Game. It has actually made me regret, just a little, that I spent the effort to record and watch the Spring Game as a normal TV program. As progressive as BTN and March Madness are starting to show themselves, they really just don't have the resources to focus on doing "grass roots" analysis like the supporters of this Blog Community. Thank You all for your efforts and please keep it up!

| 5 weeks 5 days ago | That was true before Harbaugh |
And I forget when Harbaugh got his first playing time, but he was in the NFL in 1988. Bo never was big on passing, and even Rick Leach took his arm to baseball. I think Anthony Carter is the reason that Bo allowed passing at all, so I'm more in favor of Michigan being WR and OL University more than any other position. Wheatley and Thomas are the only RB's that I would consider as having significant careers. Michigan always had successful RBs because the OL was always solid. Jamie Morris had the rushing title before Thomas, then Hart. All of them saw time as freshman, and then were the every down back from sophomore year onward. There accumulation of yards mostly came from huge amounts of run plays, with Hart enjoying an increase in games per year. Out of those three, only Thomas was an NFL back who started. Not saying They were bad at Michigan, just not really solid NFL talent. |
| 5 weeks 5 days ago | Henson and Navarre |
Did not start any games in the NFL to my knowledge. I don't even think Henson made it when he tried out for the Cowboys? But from Harbaugh to Brady, the starting QB for Michigan did start some amount of games in the NFL. Don't blame Rodriguez for the drought, blame the caretaker years of the Carr era. Also it's not like Bo was putting QB's into the NFL, that was really Moeller's doing. Bo can claim Harbaugh maybe, but Moeller's was the OC from 1987 until 1990 when he was the head coach. Moeller's last full recruiting class graduated in 1997-98 depending on how you slice it. So Carr can claim Henne, and maybe Tom Brady, but Moeller was the NFL machine. |
| 8 weeks 6 days ago | Ace scan for Magnus comments |
I'm not sure it was Magnus, but one of the insiders who watched spring practice with Brian last year provided a long description about seeing Denard be very frustrated about his passing, and that Devin was looking better in the same drills and that they were seeing equal time with all receivers, such that it wasn't a clear two's against one's thing. This is through fuzzy memory, but what sticks is the description of Denard being so dejected after one play sequence that he walked to the sideline with his head down and when Devin stuck his hand out for as a "don't worry man" gesture Denard ignored it and walked by him. Devin and Denard are room mates, and this of course was a very UN-Denard-like move. Certainly the sample size is small for Devin in real playing time from last year, but I do remember a couple plays against B1G teams where Devin dropped back for a pass, stepped up to escape the pass ruch and delivered the ball with a very Pro Style quality that was not a frequent thing from Denard until maybe the last two games of the season. What everyone forgets in the season long discussion of Denard vs Devin, is that Borges stated multiple times that "removing 1000+ yards of offense from the field is not an option" And would follow that up with, "I have to shape the offense to suit his talents". My conclusion is that Denard being such a stellar runner has stunted his growth as a passer, and probably has never had a true passing mentor until Borges. Now that Borges is saying, "Denard is my clear #1, is very football smart, and just needs to hone his leadership and footwork" tells me that Denard is going to make a first year to second year jump in performance as a passer. And of course is still made of DiLithium. I do agree with you that coincidental injuries to Denard and Devin on the same play is pretty low chance, and anything that gets the best players playing is clearly what this coaching staff is going to do.
Also Spring Practice seems to be when this coaching staff experiments with a lot of stuff that doesn't work out, but does let them get it on film to be studied by them and the players all the way until Fall Camp. I think it's a mistake to think Devin isn't the #2 QB and providing a lot of competition. But it's also a mistake to not try and get him on the field at the same time as Denard. |

Heiko, please keep adding things like MGoQuestion into your transcriptions. It not only makes your work unique but it was very funny/fun to read. I think the one that was MGoFlag up and down was the best. I also liked the unique captions and wondered why they stopped. Awesome |

I was scrolling through this thread to see if anyone noticed the destruction of West Virginia. The fact you did it with a Simpsons quote was just gravy. Eggselent |
