Manti Te'o suffers personal tragedy, will probably still play v. State

Submitted by BiSB on

According to Mark at Tremendous and the ND message boards, Manti Te'o lost his girlfriend to cancer, and may have also lost his grandmother within the same 24 house. He may miss Saturday's game, but that isn't the first thing on his mind right now.

I'm hearing some rumors that Manti Te'o isn't going to play Saturday. Would be a big blow to ND's chances if he's out.

To clarify, Manti Te'o's girlfriend passed away yesterday (confirmed) but rumors are saying his grandmother passed away as well (unrelated)

I'm sure you all join me in sending our sympathies to Manti, his family, and his girlfriend's family.

ED: Looks like Te'o will play. May he find healing in the smacking of many Spartans.

RT @NDatRivals: Brian Kelly says that Manti Te'o will play this week despite personal losses.

(H/T julesh for the update)

Prayers go out to him right now. I cannot even fathom losing two loved ones (especially someone so young) in such a short period of time.

Cancer is such an awful disease. I know first hand cause I have it too.

Thanks guys. In remission right now so technically im a "cancer survivor". But I have to go every 6 months for a battery of tests to make sure it stays that way.

I don't like hearing news like this cause it makes think about what could happen if it doesn't.

Thank you Blaze.....hey.....as my aging body continues to implode...I just found out I need a hearing aid in my left ear.  If I remember correctly you also have hearing loss - do you mind if I ask do you wear one and if so....do you have any particular ones you'd recommend?

Well, if he doesn't play it might not just be a willingness to play thing as him being out of town for a funeral, or with family.

Teo is from Hawaii, and although I don't know where his gf or grandma live, it's possible either or both of them are out of town.  So if he took right off to be with family and attend a funeral, he might not be around for the game, or prepared.

Always liked the kid (except when he played against us), he showed a lot of class coming back this year. Condolences to him and his family, hope he finds some peace and solace

Seriously.  I have worked in oncology for over 8 years as a healthcare practitioner.  I have seen more than a few cases where someone is diagnosed with cancer and the spouse leaves them because they can't handle going through the process.

Te'o obviously could have left at any time and focused more on football, having fun, school, whatever.  It speaks volumes of his character that he supported her through the process.

I hope whenever it is that he returns, he has a career day as he will most certainly be playing in honor of those two women.

I know this is lower on the importance scale but in an era of big time college football, and the stereotypes that come along with it.  I for one am impressed in a kid who obviously stuck with a girlfriend who had cancer.  This couldn't have been easy for him with the pressures of being "the athelete" on campus and I'm sure many of young females trying to get his attention.

I think we can all come together and say "To hell with Leukemia". I can't imagine dealing with that at that age, thoughts and prayers to Te'o.

Very sad. Couldn't imagine losing my girlfriend whom I've been with since high school. Would be like someone tearing half of me apart. Especially at such a young age like that. Not to mention a family member as well.

I feel for him.
