Josh Shaw story takes a really bad turn

Submitted by 1464 on

Phew...

So first, Josh Shaw was a hero and a role model.  Then, less than 48 hours later, there are rumors of conflicting reports.  Now, those conflicting reports are coming to light:

Man.  Talk about a change in direction.

We should start a betting pool on how far this escalates over the course of the week.

$20 says it ends up being drug smuggling by Thursday evening. $50 says human trafficking by the time the noon games kickoff Saturday morning.

Even if guilty of those things (which we are still investigating, and which we in no way endorse), Josh Shaw would not be guilty of any NCAA rules infraction and would remain eligible to play.  We would, of course, handle the matter internally and would likely suspend him from any games during the entire period of Shaw's rehabilitation.

Now to the most important issue that no one is discussing. What was his NFL draft stock and how much will this ultimately affect it!?

Here's the statement Shaw's lawyer, a criminal defense attorney, has put out:

"I was wrong to lie about this.  I will not, however, be telling the real story."  Basically.

EDIT: Also interesting how a kid from Palmdale, one of the lowest income areas of greater LA, has the money for an attorney like that.  Unless he's an SC alum and is giving the kid a price-break, but that could be seen as a booster giving benefits to a player.  Huh.

EDIT 2:  No educational ties to USC.  From NY, Yale undergrad, JD/MBA from Columbia.

I heard he is a secret government spy and hurt his ankles during a seal team mission. He was forced to make up a story by the government but when they viewed his story as too heroic they schemed a plan to make him look more civilian.

No one would have questioned him had he said he had to jump because a white cop was about to shoot him.

I couldn't care less that he lied. But why did the lie have to be so outlandish?! I'm not saying that lying is good by any means, but goodness! Keep it simple. That way it isn't that hard to cover up.

When he has two sprained ankles. Wonder if he becomes medically cleared to play the same time as his suspension has been lifted? That said, anyone know how long it normally takes a football player to recover from two ankle sprains?

He should have went all out and said that same night he delivered a baby in an elevator, talked a guy out of jumping off a bridge, and stopped an armed robbery in progress.

For athlete injury lies. There have been many of course. Out here in Denver I remember the Brian Griese tripped over his dog story. That one is funny as it is a well known secret, that the players will to this day not confirm, that one of his teammates punched him in the face at a party.

One of the Rockies once claimed he fell down the stairs unloading groceries when he actually fell off ATV at Todd Heltons place. Didn't a MLB pitcher run some story about washing his car? There are many but the I was saving a drowning kid probably top the list.

Trevor Pryce (of South Quad cherry bomb in the toilet fame) punched Griese and it was Clint Barmes who "tripped" Jake Plummer also had a tripping over a dog injury too, if you recall. Stupid dogs. Love, Someone from Denver not someone living in Denver

At the very least he admitted that he was full of it. Yeah, it's way after he got caught. I mean there were cops there, so I don't know why he thought he would get away with it. He pulled a stupid move and his family backed him up on it to protect his future. Then it all spun way out of control. At least now he's telling the truth and taking the hit.

The story didnt take a "bad turn," the story as first reported wasnt a story it was a lie. A lie the "media" couldn't grab fast enough as a bullshit feelgood story. The story was just that, all along. #ESPNsucks

I don't think that you quite understand what a "story" is.  The Wizard of Oz is a story, even if it is not true and thus a "lie."

Now, the facts as we know them have changed, but the story has just continued, after taking a "bad turn" for the kid.

The moral of your story is: don't be so quick to correct.  If you try to correct someone with a bullshit correction, your story just takes a turn for the worse.
