DetNews's Charboneau breaks news: Michigan fans disrespect Sparty by attending MI wedding

Cousins stood up at three weddings in Grand Rapids, MI. During the receptions, some guests introduced themselves as Michigan fans to him. In his mind this is disrespectful, and so he will thus harness such disrespect to get to the Rose Bowl.

Also, any internet articles or magazines that don't give him the respect in a manner in which he wants will be used to "kindle a fire beneath" his team.

These fans and writers will be tragic heroes when it's all said and done.

"So being at those wedding receptions is about all the motivation I needed to get back to work and prove to all those people why they shouldn't be a Michigan fan."
"I told my brother, Kyle, the other day to go on the Internet and find every article he can find, every preseason magazine he can find and compile a list of all the quotes, articles, anything that disrespects us or doesn't give us our due," he said. "I want copies made of those and I want to put them in front to the team during training camp. He's already got a pile and believe me, come two or three weeks into training camp, I'll put that up at night and be sure it kindles a fire beneath us."
"I saw a preseason magazine cover which said in the bottom corner, 'Title time for Spartans?' Cousins said. "I wanted to tell them we won the title last year, title time was last year. We're looking to repeat, so we do still feel overlooked and that Big Ten championship was somewhat forgotten by a lot of people, and that's fine."

get over yourself..the man is commenting on a blog, not like he's writing a column for the news. Fuck MSU, the entire fan base is nothing but a bunch of db's. If its going to bother you that a person has a negative opinion of a rival team or fanbase...maybe its time to gtet off the internet.

I didn't listen to the speech, but by many accounts Cousins came across as nice and respectful, but I think this article uses lengthy quotes by Cousins to show the exact contours of his competitive spirit. It literally lays out for you how he finds motivation. I think people can question (or applaud I suppose) his competitive approach and still think he's a nice guy.

This would be a really good year for Sparty to go like 6-6, including a 38-7 drubbing by Michigan, and crawl back into the shithole they thought they'd dug themselves out of.

After all of the positive press he got this week for his speech at the BT presser, he has now decided to take on the entire internet. Taking on the entire internet usually doesn't work out too well.

We'll see how tough he is talking after he goes 7-5 with a loss to Michigan as a senior.

So glad for the B1G title game this year and beyond. I HATE more than one team being able to claim a championship in a given season.

OSU claims six straight Big Ten title. If you tie with a team that beat you head to head (this happened three times in that stretch), you aren't a fucking champion.

People were mean to me! I shall have revenge via athletics!

Side note: MSU will have at least 4 losses this year. Book it. Also they play central, so they may have 5 :)

The line talking about how he vows to never let a loss like Alabama happen again looks like Cousins is trying to pull a Tebow.
I honestly don't feel insulted when I go places in my Michigan gear and have people tell me that they are state fans.

He honestly just wants to see his name on top of something before he gets planted 3 feet into the S by Martin and Roe

For all the talk about not being our little brother anymore, their leader seems to display the textbook signs of Little Brother Syndrome.

UPDATE: A reenactment of Cousins' motivational speech to his team is now available, with Michael Scott playing Kirk:

the lack of respect they're showing us? I mean, we totally left such a positive national impression when we were curled up in the fetal position as Alabama did what it wanted with us. Fuckin' brahs, man, totally disrespecting Sparty.

Whatever. I'm calling up my brahs to pound some Natty and play some Gamecube.

During the receptions, some guests introduced themselves as Michigan fans to him. In his mind this is disrespectful, and so he will thus harness such disrespect to get to the Rose Bowl.

This is the kind of motivational thinking Dantonio teaches his players. It's related to the negative recruiting approach. [To state the obvious, it's all profoundly stupid, because it just feeds the inferiority complex.]

I can't help contrasting this with what MIke Martin was talking about at the B1G media days -- "We didn't know how a championship team functioned." Cousins thinks he does, but he's going to learn this year that he doesn't.

Nota bene, Kirk: Michigan is not rebuilding this year -- Michigan was rebuilding last year. So was Notre Dame. Stop worrying about the fans and start preparing for the fact that this year, unlike last year (when you played three actual ranked teams and lost to two of them), you will play a resurgent ND along with five of the best teams in the new Big Ten. You get an extra week to prepare for Michigan, but since you will be 3-2 at that point, you'll spend the whole time trying to figure out who to blame, while Michigan has a nice road-game warm-up (win or lose) against a team without an inferiority complex (Northwestern).

best he could do? I applaud the effort to attempt to rally the troops, but this is weak. It won't even rate being posted in the Michigan locker room unless they run short on toilet paper.

Wow, I am starting to understand the fit between Cousins and Dantonio much better now. Both have an overly-emotional, irrational response to reality. Everyone is always out to get them. Cousins has got to be a future candidate for some meds.

IMHO…He's trying to develop a reason to hate. He’s trying to find something external to drive something internal. He needs a motivational tool to get his competitive spirits up.

I think a lot of athletes do this, but I don’t think it’s a good thing to take public. A savvy opponent could find a way to change the way he feels. The press is a powerful tool!!!

I don't understand how he's going to prove to people that they shouldn't be Michigan fans. Even if they beat us, that isn't really a reason not to be a Michigan fan.

Poor Sparty. Poor every other college FB team in America. It's not about the last three years, nor the last 50 years. It's about the Michigan experience - the hallowed institution, the FB tradition. You can almost feel the lives of those hardy souls gone on before us touching us and inspiring us today. It's about our pride in the learning experience in the classroom as well as outsatnding accomplishments on the field. It's about our history, our glorious past and its link to the present. It's about ivy adorned brick buildings on a brisk fall morning in anticipation of a highly emotional football game that will breakout soon. It's about each player representing 113,000 sreaming fans in the Big House. Sure other schools have the same or similar scenes, but at Michigan there's a feeling you are part of something larger than yourself, larger than all of the buildings, larger than even life itself. It's Michigan! It's about the substance of our college experience that forges the basis for further achievement throughout our lives. May we always hold our position as the winningest college FB program. We are Michigan!

I can save him a ton of time on compiling the disrespect materials. There's enough on Mgoblog since the Alabama game to wallpaper his entire apartment, including ceilings.

Sure would be nice to get a win this year. I'd say this will be the first time since 06, Michigan might actually have the emotional edge.

My respect for Cousins actually went down a little. Getting motivation from wedding receptions where someone isn't a fan of MSU? Seriously? Reading that made me think he was a little boy.

that tries to deny their little brother status, they do seem to exhibit all the classic symptoms of the inferiority complex that Mike Hart was referring to. I mean seriously getting worked about something as insignificant as a couple of people introducing themselves as Michigan fans, screams little bro syndrome to me. Here is an idea Kirk, have more than one good season in row and than maybe MSU will start getting some more respect nationally.
