Brady Hoke's Timeline: Inevitable Fate?

Submitted by jscbus on

With all the celebrations going on today (rightfully so - it's happening), what do you guys now think of Hoke's future? Mid-season termination is improbable for various reasons, but doesn't Halloween's greatest gift of all time perhaps change this forseeable outcome?

For the record, I love Hoke's enthusiasm and values when it comes to individual/team integrity. If I had it my way, I would simply relegate him to a positional coach. Say, OL and/or DL. Would much rather do without Funk.

In any event, how do you think the rest of this unravels and then culminates?

I'm not sure who you're talking to but as a Toledoan, there is not one Ohio fan I know that takes any care and/or offense to this. Script Ohio, half their propaganda and the whole state is Ohio. Considering there is an actual Ohio U also, just another reason Hoke sounds dumb.

always lower case "osu". That said, he's fine but will finish the season. What today means is that "The search" can officially begin as I think they know who the AD already is. On Hoke: A great guy! Truly, a well intentioned man, IMO. He was just way out of his element at UM for whatever reason and given all support. He failed at his "dream job" and being a good guy I kind if feel for him. Yet, it's on him at the end.

I think the goal was to fire BRANDON after OSU and use December to find an AD knowing that you were buying time until bowl season and the end of the NFL season (when the candidates are better). That way the new AD could fire Hoke around 12/27, 12/28 and hire a new coach 1/5 or 1/6 and have the press conference at the end of that week.

Why that timeline?

Now you don't get that awkward "I've got to focus on a bowl game" or "We've still got games left in the regular season" press conference.

You don't want to be without a head coach for over a month, that's craziness. You want to stall on firing Hoke and taking care of Brandon after OSU gives you that time.

Now you lose that excuse because you can wait to fire Hoke knowing you don't have an AD, that's reasonable to EVERYONE. You can't wait to fire Hoke after hiring a new AD, everyone knows he's gone.

Hopefully that makes sense.

If I'm the UofM President, I stall like crazy on this AD search, buy myself as much time as possible and when I hire a new AD, I tell him to take his customary 2 weeks. I don't want a new AD (on the job and in the office) until mid-December.

If a new AD is hired in mid-December, he'll get a pass for a week of "we'll evaluate all of our coaches" plus you have the holiday. That gets you to that 12/27, 12/28 timeframe I was talking about for Hoke.

I think that's too far into the future to get a good coaching hire. I think the sooner the better. Send him on his way after The Game and then you immediately start back channeling with your candidates if you haven't begun doing so already. A lot of hires occur before a team's bowl game takes place.

Don't forget Michigan won't be the only big program looking for a new head coach. Florida will be another very attractive coaching position and I doubt they'll feel the need to wait until after the bowl season/national championship playoffs have finished. If you want Mullen, you better start sooner than the very end of December. If you want Harbaugh, you can get him before the end of the NFL season.

Are you saying that you thought this was Schlissel's plan, or that it would have been the best plan?  It seems pretty clear to me that he was ready to act pretty quickly - the rumor of him asking Brandon to resign appears to have been true.

I don't see why this is a big deal. It's just a few weeks.  It's not like Hoke's job security was strong before today anyway.

Per the MLive article on Hackett, he had to fire thousands of Steelcase employees, including the best man in his wedding. Suffice to say, I think he's capable of doing what needs to be done.

Firing the current coach and hiring the next don't necessarily have to be performed by the same guy. This is especially true if a new AD has already been identified but not necessarily in place by the time the OSU game rolls around. Let the interim guy be the bad guy, that way the new AD can sweep in with all the necessary bravado and make it publicly known that hiring the best football coach is priority number one.

Yes they do.  What are you going to do - fire Hoke and say, "well, we are waiting to move on seaching for a new coach until the new AD is hired".    That would put the entire team in limbo.  You can't name an offseason only interim coach.

A new AD search has already begun - the new AD needs to be in place by the game, so Hoke can be fired the next day and the search can begin right then and there.

Something absolutely horrendous happens, I can't see them firing BH until after the season. I imagine that an interim AD isn't going to be wanting to make such a huge decision, so I suspect that finding an AD will come first.

would be to have the interim AD fire Hoke. Leave the new AD with a clean slate and not receive criticism from the pro Hoke contigent. I agree it should be made known now that Hoke will not coach at Michigan next year. This way should he win against OSU or even make a bowl his fate is sealed.

have seen no spark in the play of this team.  the defense is okay, in a bend but dont break (often) way, but they get no turnovers.  the offense is still what I believe Brian calls "sludgefart".

Lets hope the 49ers situation deteriorates fast.  Sounds as if Harbaugh's personality, like Saban's, works better in college.  He getting to the age where the idea of coming back to Michigan for a nice decade long run better shuffling off to network tv land........

There are plenty of people that think highly of Brady Hoke, I now know none that think highly of Brady Hoke Head Football Coach.  I believe the idea that Hoke won't be back next fall is near unanimous.  And not unanimous as a resignation to the inevitable, but unanimous as in everyone agrees it just isn't ever going to work.

I've been advocating the Earle Bruce approach (with 100% less venom than OSU had for Bruce).  Announce the coaching search immediately before The Game.

Benefits include motivation for the team to send him out with a win, and also it avoids any second-guessing if he somehow won against OSU before being let go.  In any event, I hope Coach Hoke has a merciful exit.

Hoke is dopey, and the DB-PR doublespeak was always way beyond him; but I don't see any malice or venom in the man. Let the team know there is no turning back... let the fans know the new era has started... let him just clap off into his sunset, while visions of Sugar Bowls dance in his head...

Ideally he will be hired the Monday or Tuesday of the next bye week.  Gives him (or her) time to evaluate the team and coaching staff over the rest of the season.  Hoke will be fired after the Ohio State game.

I really hope the next staff can find a role for him. He loves M so much and is a great role model. It will be really would be hard to see him go regardless of his W/L column. I doubt he would take a demotion unforntunately.

but you can't demote him really or even keep him around the team with a new HC in the house. How weird is that? To have the old boss right there, possibly even reporting to the new boss. It'd be really uncomfortable for everyone. Maybe he can return and work in the AD eventually, but for now I think we just need a firm handshake and a thank you
