I have always loved the Denard sweep at Notre Dame, where Roundtree flipped his man and Denard was gone early.
Would have to include the famed "Denard Oh No", where Denard tucked the ball, ran 5 yards, then stopped and hit an open receiver on a long slant pass. Yummy! And we saw variations many times.
Leroy Hoard breaking tackles in the backfield, before dashing to the 2 yard line in the Rose Bowl.
And from my student days, Leach takes the snap, fakes to Lytle up the middle, cuts right, turns upfield and pitches out to Huckleby, on a dead run, streaking up the sideline. Sweet music!
If you look in the dictionary under "michigan man", you will see Bump Elliot. Hoke is just a guy who was a mid level assistant for a few years........not sure just being on campus makes one a "Michigan man"......and though he may be a great guy to players and people in the program, he came off as a condescending jerk to fans and the media.
Hoke's non development of players was appalling. He was not the decision maker on offense of defense.
Dont put Hoke and any Elliot in the same sentence.
a classic Brady Hoke achievement. naming captains after you have lost your job.
can I get my neg points revoked for being correct about Hoke? My hundred million neg points came from my stating, after the Bellomy debacle at Nebraska, that Hoke was in over his head.
I got it for being one of the early Hoke critics on this site. after the Nebraska game where we had nobody ready to play after Denard got hurt, I was pretty sure Hoke was in over his head......but coming off his magial 11-2 debut, nobody wanted to hear that.
Today, I am proud to carry the scars of being correct.
though he was a Coordinator at Auburn, I believe he had a horrifyingly bad record at Iowa State.
He was not a STRONG hire, he was a SLEAZY hire, as he oversaw a crew whose biggest stars were juco transfers who would be on campus for maybe a semester before bailing
have seen no spark in the play of this team. the defense is okay, in a bend but dont break (often) way, but they get no turnovers. the offense is still what I believe Brian calls "sludgefart".
Lets hope the 49ers situation deteriorates fast. Sounds as if Harbaugh's personality, like Saban's, works better in college. He getting to the age where the idea of coming back to Michigan for a nice decade long run better shuffling off to network tv land........
I was President of the Westchester County U-M alumni club for a decade. At one time, we sold hundreds of tickets to alums as part of a pre-season bulk alumni club offer.
At one time, it was easy and the tickets were okay, though usually in the end zone at the other end from the student section.
Then, our Club was told we could only order games if we had 25 tickets ordered per game, so we joined up with the other clubs in the NYC area to try and make the minimum.......and of course, OSU, MSU and Notre Dame are never even offered to the alums.
But the last few years, the tickets the Athletic Dept makes available to the alumni clubs are so bad......have you ever been to row 1 in the corner of the south end zone? you cant even see play at the other end zone
so magically, almost nobody orders tickets through the alumni club any more. we have one alum who orders 16 tickets at a time and he gets his block together this way.
and I was in school with (and knew) Steve Strinko. He was a warrior and he was The Man. the idea that the Athletic Dept does not care about the Steve Strinkos of our world sucks.
and Les Miles was a second string guard with a perpetually pulled hamstring and a fondness for combing his mullett while admiring himself in a mirror.....any mirror..
I knew them both well, Mike Kenn, too. Not surprised Kenn went on to big things, still find it mind blowing that Les is a legendary coach himself.
I will always consider Hoke's biggest failing to be making Denard fit what Hoke wanted to do.
Denard's soph season, the only one he started, was one of the great statistical seasons of all time. 2500+ throwing and 1500+ running? I still get sad imagining two more years of Denard with RichRod.
Hoke has been a lightweight with an arrogant attitude. I dont expect him to go anywhere and start beating top 10 teams.
remember the Bellomy Nebraska game? I said it was pretty clear to me that Hoke was in over his head......didnt even have a propper #2 QB to back up injury plagued Denard.
I love seeing people with tons of MgoBlog points who post trivia or their own personal inside joke dialogs......because if you dont toe the party line here, you get neg bombed.
he was a 3 star Purdue commit who flipped and came here at the last minutem and I believe he was considered quite a catch. Believe Danny Hope (?) made snotty comments about Hoke's integrity for pursuing him.
say what you want, but RichRod invented the spread offense, and his offensive schemes are fast and fun to watch. He may never have a player who is a better fit for his system than Denard, but watching his plays is fun.
Especially if you have had to watch the Michigan offense the last 4 years.
made Hoke loook as if he was not even in the loop. In the corporate world, this type of facial is administered when hoping to encourage a contract executive to find other employment (and save legal termination fees).
I believe Hoke gave one of his concescending "we do not anticipate any changes in the coaching staff" answers to questions about Borges, then DB did his thing.
I wanted RichRod to stay, just to see 2 more years of Denard running his system. Let's not forget Denard's historic sophomore year was just a taste. Can you imagine what our offense would have been when Denard was in his 3rd year with RichRod?
we have a 220-something plus streak of games at over 100,000. Its part of the "Big House" lore.
for Brandon to be the AD who loses that streak is a smear on his reputation. The end of The Streak is likely to be its own news story. How can the man who blew the Big House Big Streak be a capable Governor? (or Senator or whatever we are his stepping stone for)
we may fall behind our rivals on the field, but the AD can put that on failure on others. The 100,000+ streak is clearly on Brandon's resume. so it must be maintained even if it means gving tickets away with big bottles of Coke.
RR had an upward arc to his record, after having to coach an almost talent-free team his first year. He also gave us Denard's sophomore season, one of the greatest in Michigan football history. What do you think Denard would have become with 2 more seasons of RR?
The defense was a joke, similar to our last year+ of "offense".
Hokeless inherited a young, winning team with a very soft schedule.....but if you remember, by the Va Tech game our offense (even with Denard) was already a joke.
Hoke insisted on turning the offense over to a journeyman OC (in the real world, many jobs at the same level would be a red flag) and he made a fabulously talented, electric player into a mediocre one by insisting he NOT do what he did best.
Not only has Hoke had a worse record each year, but he has achieved some notbable program lows himself. Who can forget the blockheaded stupidity of "33 yards on 32 carries", or "-48 yards rushing".....even "no valid backup to an injury plagued Denard with the Big 10 title on the line"
I enjoy watching Arizona play. they are better than Michigan.
(all those negative points I carrry come from dissing Hoke, starting with the Nebraska game he blew by not having Gardner ready to back up injury plagued Denard.)
Lets look at the "Hoke is a great recruiter" myth. He is in his 4th season. Where are the junior/sophomore/ freshman studs he has supposedly brought in? do you see a defensive player with the impact of Joey Bosa or Adolphus Washington? look at the mess on our offensive line, loaded with "top recruits". the only "star" performerHoke has brought in is Funchess........until we see what Peppers has or has not got.
Where would Hoke be if he did not bring in Mattison?
Has anyone noticed that even with a year off and inheriting a 1-11 team, RichRod has put together an Arizona team that is now better than Michigan?
Hoke's three years show us getting worse each year. This team has no fire. The ND debacle was another program all time low.
With the most important game of the year on the line, Borges choked on his playcall for the 2 point conversion.
forget that he showed them the formation, OSU called timeout and he came back with the same formation.
forget that his call required a QB with a broken foot to quickly plant hard on the broken foot and make a quick throw. that the throw was late was no surprise.
But I almost vomited when we ran the Gallon end around option pass against K State. Do I remember Gallon as a running QB in HS? What an awesome play? Borges would still have a job if he called the Gallon option and won the OSU game.
forget that this is the guy who made Denard Robinson into an ordinary QB
I have always felt a 14 year old with decent Madden skills would have done a better job.
"Brady Hoke inherited a program in shambles, one that was a virtual wasteland."
are you, like, 9 years old?
without going on a long rant, let me remind you that Brady Hoke inherited a sophomore who has just been named Big 10 Offensive Player of the Year. I understand that 3 years of watching Hoke abdicate offensive decision-making to a journeyman OC........with mind numbingly bad results....effects your brain, but Hoke inherited plenty.......and far more than RR ever had on campus.
He is just not much of a coach. Other than ND (who RR also beat), what are Hoke's big wins? Against a 6-6 OSU team? the lucky lucky win againt VT?
Three years in, who are the big contributions of his recruits? I see impact freshman and sophs all over.
Harbaugh went down. at least 2 other QBs went down. played (and almost beat BYU) with our #4 QB (who would that even be on this team?) . other key injuries that year. Nobody was down on Bo, thought he was a wizard for nearly beating unbeaten BYU, who had a famous rally to win. Robbie Bosco on a sprained ankle, anyone?
please. Brian founded the blog and generally does a very good job. However, this is his paying JOB now (good for him) and he is making enough money to have employees...... so taking a little email shit from your customers doesnt seem like much of a hardship.
and while "Fickle" was a fine column that captured the emotion of the moment, his prediction of a 39-0 win for OSU was juvenile at best and worthy of Chicken Little. Anyone in the M administration and football program who read or heard of the prediction will now consider the "journalism" of MGoBlog to be second rate. But spin on, appreciation thread!
PS my huge neg of points is the result of my suggesting Hoke/Borges blew the Big Ten last year at Nebraska by not having a real backup QB ready, despite having the frequently dinged Denard at QB......
That whole tribute to Hoke and Muschamp was Hand's way of saying "many thanks, but no thanks" and anybody who is suprised today had blinders on.
Did Hand really indicate "chance to win a national championship" was what separated Alabama? as if his going to MIchigan was not enough for M to win? Yikes.
so 7-5 (at best) with a whipping from the Bucks.....we were ready to hang RichRod for that.
But Hoke is Brandon's hire, so he probably makes hime lose Borges, maybe Funk in order to give hin year 4.
Sadly, there is no obvious, sexy new HC candidate I can think of..
I read Hand's praise of Muschamp and Hoke ("my favorite coach") the other day, and could not help but feel he was laying the groundwork for choosing Alabame......he is a good kid, and he seems to be trying to be respectful to the guys who put in a big effort and came up short.......
Hope I am wrong, but I will be shocked if Hand picks U-M.
where do you get the idea that it takes 5-6 years to judge a coach? RichRod was gone in 3. Urban is in his second seasson, after taking over a .500 team.......and he has yet to lose.
Would you feel confident about judging what kind of coach Urban is right now?

I believe he may have played George Foreman in a movie. has has lots of roles and has a page on IMDB:
you are tight. she has been a state championship finalist for so long, I assumed she was gone.
did Brezovsky play? she was such a stud in HS please dont tell me she and Flaherty wont be on the floor together.

4th year here. Who is the best Hoke recruit on the team? Funchess. Name another futrue NFL player Hoke has brought in.

the 1969 OSU team was a juggernaut, coming in having gone for 2 at the end of the previous year's 50-14 ass whipping.
Hoke should go "full Bo" including the inspirational captain's speech, followed by charging out of the locker room through the unopened (fake) door.
