Bo statue to stand in new Schembechler Hall entrance
The entrance to the building will shift from the State Street side to the north side of the building. A statue of Bo Schembechler will stand in the entrance to the building and a wall will have his famous words “those who stay will be champions” inscribed on it.
Didn't see this anywhere in the MGoBlue article. I sugested it in a post in the thread from yesterday, without knowing about this article. Pretty awesome if you ask me. He deserves one, the building is named after him.
How about a Fritz Crisler statue at the new entrance of Crisler Center? A statue of the father of Michigan Athletics, Fielding Yost at Yost Arena? Bob Ufer at the concourse at Michigan Stadium? Ray Fisher at the entrance of Wilpon Baseball Complex? Don Canahm at the 'Nat?
Here's the statue of Bo at his alma mater, miami university
Now the only thing left to wonder is what his pose will be.
I'm going with standing with his arms crossed
I'd like to see this:
Or this:
Hey guys I think I know where they might be able to get a statue's worth of remeltable bronze on the cheap
Take it down or I'll do it myself. Wait, wrong thread.
This is cool, actually. I hope they put enough detail into the face to give it a classic Bo expression.
Screaming at a referee?
If any sports figure in M history deserves a statue, it's Bo, but it doesn't seem very Michigan. Just my opinion, but good for Bo.
I agree. I don't think Michigan needs to do this kind of stuff. We don't need a statue to know what Bo did for the program.
Fair point, but if we're going to create a statue for an individual, I like that it's the individual who preached "the team, the team, the team."
was put it inside the entrance. To me, that's a classy step above putting it outside the stadium. This isn't a major "get off my lawn" step for me, but given the choice I would have gone with not putting it up.
"No man is more important than the team. No coach is more important than the team."
Yeah, there's something slightly unsettling about us doing this right now when PSU is getting (justifiably) skewered for deifying a football coach.
when the person you are honoring is still walking around, and actually coaching, you don't really need a statue to remember what they looked like, or to provide a view for people who haven't had the chance to meet the person. Cause they can actually meet the person.
I'm not a fan of statutes at UM, but at least they are going to put it inside his building and not outside the stadium.
Who's idea was it for a statue? Was it Brandon or someone else?
Rendering of the new Bo statue...
Edit: Actual Bo statue at the UM Cardiovascular Center.
I hope the statue is one of the following:

That first picture is awesome! I bet this is what they're all saying:
Ref: Nowww holdonaminute, I'll tell ya what I saw!
Bo: Can't you SEE?!?!?
Guy between Bo and ref: Well shucks, boss, I think Bo's got a point.
#9: Heh heh, you tell 'im coach.
#46: Heh heh, you tell 'im coach.
Assistant (is that Moeller?): Aww, you can't be serious, ref! You're no better'n a sack'a crap! That's right, a sack'a crap!
Grad assistant: I can't believe I'm this close to a genuine Bo Schembechler blowup!
Yep, that assistant is definitely Moeller. When was this taken - early '70s?
Yes, the 1973 Ohio game (the infamous 10-10 tie). Also note the Adidas footwear.

I think Bo just saw the Hemingway non-TD at the end of the Iowa game.
"His hands are under the ball!"
Well how about that, Bo is the original "Y U NO ______ !!?!?!?!?!?" guy.
If someone could cleanly crop him out of that picture, we could start our own meme!
REF
Y U NO OPEN YOUR EYES!!???
Good - so the number of coaching legend statues in the Big Ten will remain the same.
He should be dunking a basketball
And then, upon further inspection, you realize that basketball is actually Brutus' head.
I would like to see a statue of Bo and Woody shaking hand at the Michigan Ohio border on I-75. Spartan fans would love it.
You know what, I actually love this idea. Where would you put it? Somewhere around Toledo/Sylvania?
Imagine this in bronze:
Make them really huge statues too.
A co-op between MgoBlog and 11W?
Right on the border on 23 imo would be perfect.
on US-23.
I really like this, but it doesn't need to be on Michigan - Ohio border.
Put it in Ann Arbor. It perfectly conveys the Schembechler view of football as I have come to understand it -- honor and integrity in all aspects of a man's life, even for bitter adversaries on the field.
I look at that picture and I damn near tear up thinking about what a class act Schembechler was. And I smile when I think we have the same in Hoke.
...I think statues are dumb. But a Bo-Woody handshake statue at the border would be pretty awesome.
The inspiration IIRC comes from the: Bo vs Woody 10 year War video. I think they might have done something similar to this. Off to google to search
1) I don't think our Bo statue needs a cape.
2) I'm quite sure Bo would be pissed to have anything red on him.
I say go for the cape. Give the statue a little bit of a Lando Calrissian look.
You can tell the Bo statue is pissed b/c he's trying to push the red cape away from him.
They are very unlikely to do something dumb. A dead man has never made a bad decision.
The inscription will be "Do I look stupid?"
Please, please this:
...but if Bo were still alive there's no way he'd let them put up a statue. He was way too modest and team oriented.
Just capture the core pieces of his personality: a Michigan cap, a windbreaker, a pair of aviator sunglasses and a piece of gum.
Love the Miami one, as an Alum of Miami I was always proud of Bo and what he did at Michigan, but at the same time just doesn't seem right at Michigan.
Not a huge fan of building statues, especially in light of the Paterno scandal (not that there are any sort of issues akin to that with Bo).
His name is on the damn building. Isn't that enough?
This just doesn't seem like a thing Michigan would do.
Gotta do something with all that excess seat licensing money, right?
Your avatar + the statement "I would love to get down there and see it in person."
There's definitely a joke in there somewhere...
