If it helps I heard it on the radio a few minutes ago. Jack Arute was talking about it. It is real, no linkey from me though.

How 'bout a link?

or Schembechler-Hayes, making Stagg the coach's trophy, which is the way it should have been.
November 14th, 2011 at 12:03 PM ^
name it after Yost!
November 14th, 2011 at 4:15 PM ^
...and then ESPN can televise the presentation ceremony and call it the "Yostys"
November 14th, 2011 at 11:57 AM ^
Just leave it as the Stagg trophy for all I care. The whole two-name thing was a dumb idea to begin with.
EDIT: Looks like that's what they're going to do. Works for me.
November 14th, 2011 at 12:01 PM ^
Never understood why they named it after Paterno anyway. I know he's done a lot for that program, but they've only joined the Big Ten in 1990. He only has 3 Big Ten titles where there are other coaches who have many more. I guess I just don't understand the Big Ten's reluctance to embrace players and coaches of the two most historic Big Ten programs.
I'm fine with them leaving it as the Stagg trophy. No relation to any current Big Ten school but still speaks to the history of the conference.

November 14th, 2011 at 12:48 PM ^
You're going to have complaints no matter what. My point was why shy away from the history of your conference, especially if you're going to name it after a coach(es). They could have easily gone with a bland generic name for the trophy that wouldn't have displeased anyone.
November 14th, 2011 at 2:02 PM ^
The whole Big 2 Little 8 stigma still burns deep in the little 8.
November 14th, 2011 at 2:14 PM ^
Saw a Headline,... "Big ten is now going Stagg!" har-har!
November 14th, 2011 at 5:57 PM ^
Keeping it Stagg solo probably makes most senseI see what you did there.
November 14th, 2011 at 1:18 PM ^
Yeah. Paterno also had a losing record against Carr, Ferentz, and Tressel. How the heck do you name the championship trophy after a guy who spend most of his B1G career losing to the elder statesmen of the conference?
November 14th, 2011 at 3:02 PM ^
"but they've only joined the Big Ten in 1990. He only has 3 Big Ten titles where there are other coaches who have many more."
Agree. Also, it bugs me how the Big Ten Network keeps running these Best of the Big Ten QB, or RBs or Defensive Players, etc. and they include PSU players from before they joined the Big Ten. Now they are including Nebraska players from the past and they haven't even completed a season yet.
November 14th, 2011 at 6:25 PM ^
think that's a bit of a stretch.

How bout: The Big Ten Championship Trophy
November 14th, 2011 at 12:06 PM ^
I like the sound of that
November 14th, 2011 at 12:02 PM ^
I wonder if they're just going to keep in as the Stagg Trophy or actively look to rename it. I think Stagg-Yost would have nice ring to it and definitely emphasizes the early days of the Big Ten. As for all future trophies, I hope everyone has unfortunately learned not to name trophies after active coaches/players. If they're still in the game it's always to soon to assess they're full legacy.
November 14th, 2011 at 12:06 PM ^
They're going to rename it the Stagg-CTBNL Trophy.
That's Coach To Be Named Later, so that when the Big Ten expands again, the new team can get one of their names on a trophy.
November 14th, 2011 at 12:08 PM ^
"In light of the child sex-abuse scandal at Penn State, Joe Paterno's name has been removed from the new Big Ten championship trophy, the conference announced Monday.
The Big Ten said that the crisis at Penn State, which led to Paterno's firing as coach Wednesday night, prompted the decision to remove his name from the trophy. The new trophy, to be awarded Dec. 3 at the inaugural Big Ten football championship game at Indianapolis, had been named for both Paterno and former University of Chicago coach Amos Alonzo Stagg.
It will now be known only as the Stagg Championship Trophy."

Or schembeckler-Hayes, or better not batman-robin
November 14th, 2011 at 12:11 PM ^
He shouldnt have even been on the trophy to begin with (no active coaches) and yes I thought that before the scandal.
November 14th, 2011 at 12:48 PM ^
if anything, it should only be named after someone who is deceased. this way, there is no way to have an event like PSU's that can tarnish the trophy.
November 14th, 2011 at 1:07 PM ^
Further proof the B1G is horrible at branding. Always name things for people who are long dead and don't offer up a risk of scandal.
Seriousily we must have the worst branding/marketing department of any conference right now. Offset only by the fact the guys who set up the BTN figured out how to make it print money.
November 14th, 2011 at 12:19 PM ^
that was a no brainer.
I vote for the Stagg-Fickell trophy.
November 14th, 2011 at 12:29 PM ^
Paterno's name should never be on it in the first place. Any living person should not have their name on the trophy. Heisman Trophy was renamed only after his death. Since Stagg's U Chicago is no longer part of the conference, having his name on the trophy is more politically appropriate than other coaching legends such as Yost.
November 14th, 2011 at 12:37 PM ^
While they're at it, can they change the trophy design? It's really plain and boring.
November 14th, 2011 at 12:40 PM ^
Having my graduate degree from UChicago and having heard the self-righteous rants from professors and students on campus about how little they thought of football, as well as their befuddlement that their sacred institution ever lowered itself to the general tomfoolery of championship football... It makes me giggle with glee just a little bit to see the championship trophy now solely named after Stagg.
November 14th, 2011 at 6:02 PM ^
This is probably the best argument for keeping it as the Stagg Trophy. You're not favoring any current member of the conference, and the former member you're favoring doesn't want to have anything to do with football, anyway.
November 14th, 2011 at 6:57 PM ^
Chicago regularly draws crowds of 1,000+ and they won a championship last year (in a conference of just four teams).

Kipke gets snubbed again. The dude won two national titles and all he gets is one little side street named after him. (Granted, that stretch from 1934-37 was pretty rough.)
November 14th, 2011 at 12:43 PM ^
It shouldn't have been named after him anyway. It seems tacky to name it after an active coach, but whatever it's okay now.
November 14th, 2011 at 1:55 PM ^
in the same sentence for at least a decade.
November 14th, 2011 at 12:47 PM ^
Seriously?
I don't think assaulting players and sideline media memebrs (see: '77 OSU at Michigan) on camera is worthy of any recognition. In that regard, Rick Venturi is more worthy of mention than Hayes.
November 14th, 2011 at 1:00 PM ^
It will be interesting to see going forward how many other organizations decide to remove Paterno's name from awards, buildings, events, etc.
November 14th, 2011 at 1:11 PM ^
...who could auction off the rights to the second name each year.
Stagg-Rotel.
