Alex Boone raves about Harbaugh

Submitted by snarling wolverine on February 3rd, 2022 at 1:28 PM

Someone posted this link in one of the threads (I don't remember who it was, apologies) but it's worth sharing again.  Some interesting tidbits about how he operated behind the scenes.

(More fun comments from Minnesota fans below.  They really wanted him.)

He's just flip flopping and it's not even remotely minor.

Prior to Harbaugh leaving SF Boone backed him. He left and Boone said he pushed too hard and guys were sick of him always being "on." In this interview he says the exact opposite. He's awesome to be around, is always "on" but in a good way.

Just hard to take him seriously when he said what's black is white and now it's black again.

At around the 36:00 mark he admitted he’d love Harbaugh and then at times hate him or be sick of him. But ended saying in the end realize Harbaugh was right. And that fits with Jim’s jackhammer personality.

EDIT: At 42:50 they ask him about the HBO interview where he called Harbaugh a phsycho. Boone says, Yes, I said that and he is and he's f**kin my best friend.

So, he owns what he said then and what he's saying now, and clearly lands on Harbaugh being a great coach.

This dynamic describes more than a couple Michigan fans around here.

My one gripe is, your apology should be as loud as the thing you did wrong initially. The media took his bullshit and ran with it and it follows Harbaugh 7 years later, and I had no idea until now he felt otherwise. But tbh the media probably just doesn't care to push the "Harbaugh is a human and some people even like or love him" narrative over "Harbaugh crazy man"

Thanks for posting this as its own thread.  It got buried in the other threads and it is a terrific interview with Alex Boone.

It is clear that Harbaugh loves football and loves his players and that they LOVE him.

Mike Mac said something similar in a Ravens interview the other day.  Harbaugh loves his players and he always has their backs.

Why do I feel like this past season and the first two seasons we got the SF version of Harbaugh and the others he was just not himself (I still think 2016 pissed him off royally)

This kind of feels like that time when Kevin Love was actively throwing Beilein under the bus when he was in Cleveland, and then cozying up to the media and telling everyone how great and nice he was after Beilein was shown the door.

Nah, Kevin Love was way worse. Boone just said some things when Harbaugh left. Love actively undermined Beilein while Beilein was still coaching. Beilein had a bunch of players that were younger and less experienced than the ones he had just been coaching at Michigan, and he felt he needed to do a lot of teaching and video work with that group (it’s one of the stated reasons he was hired). Love felt above that and bitched about it, and when your all-star Olympian team elder and star doesn’t buy in to what the coach is selling, it’s not surprising that the team didn’t follow suit. He was such a team cancer that the Cavs tried to trade him even though at the time he was the only thing propping up ticket sales, but no one wanted him at his stupidly large salary. He’s doing better now because he’s decided to put his full effort forward for the current coach, and those young players and others have developed into a solid core that can win games, but I still can’t root for him because he was such a selfish prick.

This is interesting. It does seem like lots of those 49er's players that played for Harbaugh loved him (maybe because they won so much).

My one and only insider tidbit is that the Vikings players did not want him. Not sure if this had any bearing at all on yesterday's events, but the word was "he's a poor communicator and quirky," and I'm sure they didn't want someone who demands as much control as Harbaugh does.

Fine by me. He's our weirdo; go get your own!

Viking fans' comments under the video:

After Hearing Boone talk about Harbaugh, it’s going to be a huge letdown if he’s not the Vikings next HC!

Harbaugh is exactly what the Vikings need. He is a pure motivator who gets the best out of players He may be a little corky, according to some but all he does is win. If I was the owner I would ask him why he would leave Michigan for the Vikings. His answer most likely would be because I want to win a Super Bowl and I can do it in Minnesota. Thanks Boonee for the excellent description of Jim Harbaugh. ? ????

Hearing Boone talk about Harbaugh has me ready to run through a brick wall

Boone has got me so pumped for Harbaugh... I'm hoping this pans out.

I honestly had NO desire for Harbaugh, but after hearing Boonie talk about him (and specifically his relationship with that front office) I'm completely flipped 180! I think KAM and the Wilfs are the PERFECT group of guys for him to work with!!

Amazing segment. I'm so stoked for harbaugh in MN. Boone makes him sound like a perfect fit. Thanks for sharing alex. Sköl.

Harbaugh would have this team as contender next year. Boone has me unbelievable pumped for getting Harbaugh.

Fantastic episode. Boone has made me want to do cart wheels for Harbaugh!

So he just likes to say things loudly for attention... regardless of the content. Cool. I'll listen because the last month has been total shit for us, but... this guy flails in the wind.

This was beyond raving. Boone sounded like he knew Harbs was coming and had every reason waiting to convince the fan base this was the perfect hire. Makes me want to watch today’s episode to see the shock and backtracking

i actually took the time to listen to about 20 minutes of this while doing some chores, and if boone is to be believed, we have the greatest football coach on the planet, and i'm being serious.  should be required listening for the 'fire harbaugh' crowd, the 'he gone!' crowd, the 'he talked to someone else so fire him now!' crowd, etc.
