ABC World New Tonight covering Hoke/Morris incident

Submitted by snackyx on

Just saw ABC national news with a segment on the Hoke/Morris incident.  The brushfire is spreading on the national front, and when football stories are covered by non-sports outlets in the media, it isn't going to be pretty.

This, Dave Brandon, is not the "marketing" you want.  Stay tuned........

Point one I agree with, point two about the low level assistant I don't agree with.  If Michigan were undefeated nobody would pay it much mind beyond a question during the presser and then back to questions about the first B1G win of the season.  It's all good when the W column is full.

You and I have strongly disagreed on some things, but being a cynic I think you're mostly right here. I believe there would be a bit of a minor controversy, but if we were stomping people the brouhaha would be far smaller than it is now.

I don't think ANYONE is using the Morris situation for Hoke being fired. I think EVERYONE is using the Morris situation for Hoke being fired NOW. The vast majority of the board wanted Hoke gone, but at the end of the season...in an honorable way. They appreciated that the guy loves Michigan, that he took a job without knowing the pay, that he worked his ass off to get to Michigan and for Michigan. They felt bad for him that he failed at his dream job. The only part of the narrative that the Morris situation changed, was the timeline and the sympathy for Hoke. Now people don't give a fuck, they want him to resign tomorrow. Because now he looks like all of the good he stood for was either 1. fake or 2. part of the most oblivious man known to mankind...one who is dangerous to his own team if he really, truly is that clueless and naive. So all this "the Morris situation is just an excuse to get rid of Hoke" stuff isn't true...it's just an excuse to get rid of him Oct. 1 instead of Dec. 1.

It may be true that some of this is fueled by wanting Hoke gone, but the reality is that he is gone at the end of the season regardless at this point so I don't think it is fair to assume every fan everywhere is just complaining about some minor infraction in hopes of getting Hoke out. They already have that on Nov. 30th. This is major. Putting a kid back in the game who was JUST pulled due to injury? That's something to talk about and reflect upon. I think Hoke's "tough guy/be a man" mentality has a lot to do with this situation. He seems to think everything short of bones breaking through skin or bleeding from every orifice is nothing more than a minor inconvenience. I wonder how well he'd play on a hurt leg or after some crazy knockout blow to the chin? It's all fun and games until he makes some kid a paraplegic, and he seems to be taking the heat for that mentality now. This is of his own making.

the Urban-Tebow incident a few years back, and there was another during a M-ND game a couple years back. There was a noise, and then it went away; life went on. But, as a general rule, I don't think it is possible for shit this egregious to happen on a team well-coached enough to be undefeated in the first place. There is simply no way this discussion could be taking place if the coaching was competent enough to meet the proviso for your argument. This has now gone from being toxic to M football to being a threat to the safety of the players in the program. It is time to stop the devolutionary carnage.

The NFL is currently in the midsts of a major lawsuit regarding concussions. They've completely revamped their rules and protocol regarding concussions and player safety.

And here is Michigan, with a player who CLEARLY looks concussed (along with other injuries) and the head coach not only leaves him out there, but when he finally does pull him, he sends him back in because, being currently down 30-7 in the 4th quarter, a time out is more important.

The player management was deplorable.  It was certainly fireable.

Only if you believe that the head coach knew his QB had been hit and potentially had a concussion.

Here's where Hoke's general cluelessness helps him out.  It is not hard to believe that Hoke did not see what went on, and of course with no headset did not hear what went on.

You can certainly argue that he should be fired for being so cluelessness in general.  But you can make the case that he was not maliciously negligent.

We all want Hoke fired for being so clueless but now we are saying that we don't believe him when he said he had no clue.

Agreed.  But if we believe that he is clueless, why is it so hard to believe that he had no clue about Morris' status?

Putting him back in because you did not know he was hit in the head (no penalty was called) is bad, yes, but not nearly as bad as knowing he may have a concussion and putting him back in anyway.

I think Brady Hoke is a little clueless, but I don't think he is malicious.

Fire him for being an incompetent coach, fine, but don't try to fire him for player mistreatment.

His general incompetence is what led to player mistreatment. I don't think you can extract the two.

I didn't have the opportunity to watch the game live, but having seen the Morris clip now, I'll say this: I've never seen someone more obviously concussed in my life outside of a Peanuts cartoon. Staggering around the field looking like a drunk person for nearly a minute after multiple plays is incredibly obvious. Putting him back on the field is inexcusable; that there's no one on the sideline who could say "Shane's concussed, he can't go back out there" to Hoke is a systemic failure on the part of the entire team, and the end result is gross player mistreatment. It's absolutely not OK, and at this point sussing out the detailed reason why we should fire him seems redundant, because the macro-level reason we should fire him is sufficient.

I did.

Hoke is a nice guy in over his head.  That is reason enough for him to be fired.

There is no need to slander his personal integrity to try to get him out.

Brady Hoke did not willingly and knowingly push a player with a concussion back into a football game.  That's not him.

We want to fire Hoke over the Morris deal yet 1/2 the users on this site want a NFl Coach that suspended his player 2 games for knocking wife out... Mgoblog is reaching new lows and I'm damn near ready to boycott it!!

Don't speak without knowing the facts. It has been mentioned in the media on a number of occasions that John Harbaugh wanted him off the team immediately but was overruled by higher ups. I think the OTL said as much. It was the NFL that issued the two game suspension. Jesus.

As much as I hate to see the (formerly) good name of Michigan getting dragged through the mud, it is a) deserved and b) hopefully the final blow that will seal the fate of the AD and HC. I didn't think I could witness anything more atrocious than 2008 but I think we're there now.

LOL....this is simply comical at this point. Same people will defend it, others will damn him for it.

Fact of the matter is a clean sweep needs to be had in the athletic department and the football program.

Time to fix from ground up instead of trying to bring in someone else to fix the middle levels.

This is a little ridiculous. I want Hoke gone as much as everyone right now, and what he did was reprehensible, but is this ABC World News-worthy? ISIS, ebola, shootings, volcanoes...Shane Morris? Come on.

It was fairly basic, I thought. They tied it to the general issue of concussions in football, comparing and contrasting the college rules and the NFL rules. Brady didn't come out looking very good.

Just watched the piece. It was not a good visual for Hoke or UM.

They have to answer for this, at the very least there needs to be some sort of CYA response about putting new protocols in place to make sure it never happens again.

I suspect our coach and our AD will go into further lockdown Fort Schembechler mode. Which is weak.

End this charade. Cashier them both.

Hoke was on the same newscast as ISIS.

How the fuck is he still employed. There is no way ANYONE can justify him having a job right now. Or BrandOn, for that matter.
