I’m surprised at how many…

I’m surprised at how many posters are omitting Rudy Tomjanovich. He averaged 25 points and 14 rebounds a game and, I believe, was the second pick in the NBA draft (after, the in the current news, Pistol Pete Maravich).  His numbers might have been even better if there were three-point shots, not to mention freshman eligibility. Michigan sucked when he was here (heck 6-1 Bird Carter was essentially the center for a while), but he single-handed made Michigan worth watching for three years.

Also appreciate the original poster’s mention of Henry Wilmore. He averaged 23 points as a 6-3 Sophomore forward. He was a tweener, who was great as a forward but height challenged, but not a great ball handler as a guard.

Actually almost every number…

Actually almost every number cruncher says that the Mets’ long-term deal with Bonilla was a win for the Mets and a loss for Bonilla. That’s why Cohen has embraced the day.

Actually it’s one of the…

Actually it’s one of the best, but I no longer think it’s THE best. It’s very deep, but doesn’t have the same level of high end talent it contained a few years ago,.

He did play over 100 games…

He did play over 100 games in the outfield in Japan and around 15 with the Angels., and he averaged 19 steals a season over the past three seasons, so he clearly has the speed to play in the field.

When I was with the Daily…

When I was with the Daily decades ago, I recall hearing Delaware could use the helmets, but if they were to play Michigan, they had to use other helmets. BTW, I also believe that during the now pretty much forgotten RichRod era, the UD-UM matchup almost came to pass, but Michigan wound up scheduling Delaware State instead.

I’m a retired lawyer, who…

I’m a retired lawyer, who had a number of cases involving TRO’s and Preliminary Injunctions, albeit in Federal court. It’s not uncommon for a judge to deny the TRO and then hold an expedited hearing on the preliminary injunction. I’m not sure if Kuhnke is doing something like that here, but it sure sounds like it. I also wouldn’t be surprised if Kuhnke at some point before Friday encourages Michigan and the B1G to get together and work this out. And, I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s an agreement wherein Michigan does not agree with the penalty or findings, but agrees that JH won’t coach the Maryland game, but will coach the tOSU game.

FWIW, I thought the facts, at least those I was aware of, were compelling enough for Kuhnke to grant the TRO and then schedule a follow-up hearing this week. However, one of the issues may have been the delay in getting her the pleadings, etc., since the case was initially assigned to another judge.

I thought a lot of calls…

I thought a lot of calls early went against Michigan, but as the game progressed, things evened out. All in all, I thought the refs did pretty well. Before the game, I said to my brother-in-law that I was worried about the ref-ing, but as the game went on, I rescinded my concern.

Gun to my head, OSU… Gun to my head, OSU. Deciding factor: Frames Janklin
I wonder if the Nevada guy…

I wonder if the Nevada guy came to Ann Arbor the UNLV game and he felt he wasn’t treated well.

I wonder if CJ Carr would…

I wonder if CJ Carr would still make his decision to go to ND.

If Newsome doesn’t get hurt…

If Newsome doesn’t get hurt in 2016, Michigan beats OSU and probably plays for the National Championship. Just think of all the 4th Q running plays that just came up a bit short.

My wife and I both worked in…

My wife and I both worked in DC at the time, but I had a doctor’s appointment on the DC-Chevy Chase line that morning. While I was getting blood work done, someone came in to say a plane had flown into the WTC. I assumed it was one of the tourist planes that had come close to the WTC by accident in the recent past. When my appointment was over, I walked across the street where there was a Starbucks so i could get some coffee and something to eat - I had fasted for the appointment - and decide whether to go into the office late or take advantage of the beautiful weather and hit the links. That’s when I really learned what was up and that made my decision easy - not going to the office or going golfing - head home and try to get a hold of my wife.

Meanwhile, phones were done, so there was no way to communicate with my wife who was in DOT’s HQ building. After the first plane hit, the senior lawyers went up to the General Counsel’s office to follow the news and decide whether to send employees home. While they were watching, the report of the plane hitting the Pentagon hit the news. Everyone in the office ran to the window which looked out to the Pentagon. My wife, on the other hand, grabbed her stuff and went done to the Metro station below the building. There were rumors that Metro had shut down; they proved untrue. We lived in Bethesda and the direct route home would have gone right under downtown DC, so she headed the opposite direction and eventually, for those familiar with DC, got off at the Tacoma Park station. Luckily, and almost unbelievably, there was a taxi driver parked outside of the station, who had been listening to tapes and was oblivious to what was happening just miles away. Finally she made it home right around noon, quieting my frantic concern.

Two postscripts:

— right around five PM, I got a phone call from the head of the agency where I worked, activating the phone tree to tell my employees that the agency would be open as usual the next day. So far as I can recall, the only agency that did not open as usual on 9/12 was, understandably, the Pentagon.

— at the time, my parents lived ~20 blocks from the WTC — but were on a cruise out of Manhattan to the Caribbean. My father had regularly followed the construction of the WTC, pointing out the progress, and two years earlier had taken the family to Windows on the World for an anniversary celebration. When the ship docked in Charleston, SC, a couple of days later, he finally was able to call me. I don’t think he got two words out before he broke into tears.

Phew, that was hard to type, but as someone noted about, there is therapeutic value to writing it.

Which makes sense given…

Which makes sense given Obama’s Hawaii connections.

C’mon. Manning already was…

C’mon. Manning already was at 91 pitches in the 7th inning. There’s no way he’s going to pitch all nine innings. He had an arm injury last year, is just coming back from a foot injury, and in his MLB career he’s thrown more than 100 pitches (102 to be precise) once. Now you can quibble about whether MLB should be babying pitchers, but you just can’t expect someone to throw 120 pitches in a game without preparing him for that. Just ask Johan Santana who was never the same pitcher after throwing 130 pitches to get a “no-hitter” a decade ago. (Quotes around no-hitter because if there had been review, a ball call foul would have been ruled a hit.). [Looks like I took too long to make the same point that others made more succinctly).

BTW, not really relevant to…

BTW, not really relevant to the meat of the Hello post, but Ijamsville is basically just as close to DC as Baltimore. It can be reached off 70 or 270. It’s home to one of the better public gold courses around: the PB Dye Golf Club.

I wonder if the real loss…

I wonder if the real loss was not Bakich, but Chris Fetter. When he was around, UM had not only one of the best pitching staffs in the B1G, but in the country.

He’s BC, not BU. If you’re from the Boston area, you won’t want to make that mistake very often. ;>)

Assuming, as we understand…

Assuming, as we understand to be the case, that the players love him. It might be nice for Warde to come to the locker room before the final game and announce that the interim tag has been removed.

That call was such a classic…

That call was such a classic that fans still use it regularly. A few weeks ago I was golfing with my brother-in-law. On the last hole, we both got on in 3 after a very disappointing round to say the least. My brother-in-law had an 8-footer; I had a 60 footer; no exaggeration. When we reached the green, I said to him that his put was makable, but I’d need a miracle. I putted and halfway to the hole, i said, “Do you believe in miracles?” As the put dropped into the hole, we both said “Yes” at the same time.

Another vote for Pizzeria…

Another vote for Pizzeria Blanco.  I think there’s at least one other location besides the one in Phoenix. Blue Adobe Grill in Mesa is quite good (New Mexican food).

Have you seen clips of the M-OSU snow bowl?

Well, part of being a coach…

Well, part of being a coach in a university, or high school or any similar, setting, is helping your players learn not only how to be good players but good people. IF he’s not doing that well, that’s a problem. Whether it can be shown that he failed to do that is another story. And, even if that can be shown, any action MSU might want to take is highly dependent on what’s in his contract.

If this was serious back…

If this was serious back surgery - and what we know, suggests that it was - he may not be ready to do much at the draft combines, meaning any draft grade would have to be based on his pre-injury play. Can’t expect that to be very high.

Everything’s wonderful in…

Everything’s wonderful in Hawaii, but these 6 am games are getting a bit much.  I think this week I’m going to record. Figure I’ll get up at 6:15. It’ll be about 6:30 when I get in front of the TV. With the wonder of fast forward, I’ll be watching live by sometime in the second quarter.

Apparently he plans to be in…

Apparently he plans to be in attendance at the Big House today.

Well, when the games are…

Well, when the games are noon starts like they are this week, you wake up early and still have most of the day ahead of you to beach, hike, golf, etc.

Pretty sure it doesn’t open…

Pretty sure it doesn’t open till noon HST.

Craig has a place in Kona,…

Craig has a place in Kona, but splits time between A2 and Kona. My recollection is that he’s in the former for most, if not all, of the football season.

So far as I know, the only “official” game watching site is in Honolulu, but I haven’t seen anything yet this year about a site.

The CSU game starts at 6 am…

The CSU game starts at 6 am in Hawaii where I currently live. I DVR the game, wake up when I’m ready to wake up, and make sure relatives and friends know not to call, email or text until I send word that I’ve caught up to the live feed,

Make it 3-2, an ERA of 3.25…

Make it 3-2, an ERA of 3.25 and a WHIP of 1.27. He got the win in Arizona’s 7-2 win over the White Sox this evening.

Nwogu is currently in High-A…

Nwogu is currently in High-A ball and is about a year older than the average player at that level. Hopefully it’s not wishful thinking, but something appears to have kicked in for Nwogu recently. Over the last 90 days, he has an .897 OPS with 11 homers and 13 steals in 179 at bats. He’s been even better over the last 28 days: 1.046 OPS with six homers and six steals over 69 at bats.

Someone gave them a first…

Someone gave them a first place vote.

One of my favorite cool…

One of my favorite cool stories of all time focused on him. I was maybe 12, 13 and had taken the bus from Jersey with some friends into the Port Authority terminal in Manhattan to watch an NBA Doubleheader at the Garden when it was on 8th Avenue around 49th street. Yes, back then, 12 and 13 year olds could go into NYC alone and the NBA, having trouble selling tickets, regularly had doubleheaders at MSG. Game 1 would generally be something like Cincy-Syracuse, game 2 often was the Knicks versus the Celtics. Anyway, we’re walking up 8th Avenue toward the Garden and got to about 47th Street, when one of us said shouldn’t we have gotten there yet. This tall African-American walking quickly, paused and said two more blocks. It was Russell. Can you imagine a peak NBA player in this day and age walking near the Garden and not attracting any attention. Ah, times have changed. RIP, Mr. Russell.

Another vote for Jordan…

Another vote for Jordan Bischel.  Oh, and BTW, Willie Weiss just announced he’s off to Clemson to join Bakich. Maybe Bischel would bring some Chippewas with him.

It would be nice if Oregon…

It would be nice if Oregon could tie things up and send the game into extras.

That was my initial reaction…

That was my initial reaction, but then I looked at their out of conference schedule: Lafayette, Princeton, etc.  Their best out of conference opponent was probably Coastal Carolina or Hawaii. Michigan, on the other hand, plays SEC schools, ACC schools, etc. OTOH, their performance in the B1G probably earned them a bid regardless. After all, if the B1G was so bad, how is Maryland ranked in the top 10 and hosting a regional.

Michigan played Louisville…

Michigan played Louisville three times in March. Lost 5-3, won 16-7, lost 13-1.  Bottom line for this iteration of Michigan baseball: when they get pitching, they can beat anyone. Problem is, getting pitching consistently has been a problem all season.  They miss former pitching coach, now Tiger pitching coach, Chris Fetter.

It’s six until Eastern Standard Time starts. Then it’s five.

In the summer of 1972, I…

In the summer of 1972, I went to a game at Wrigley Field and had a seat in the first row by the right field bullpen. Before the game, there were a bunch of kids yelling to Cardinal Ted Sizemore, who played at Michigan for the 60s, about whether he was going to play that day. I yelled, “Hey, Ted, what do you think of Moby Benedict?” He looked towards me, pointed, I nodded, and he trotted over. We talked for about 15 minutes about Moby, Michigan, the Majors.  It wasn’t quite, Hey Moby, but it led to one of my most memorable experiences at an MLB park.

Before Penn State joined the…

Before Penn State joined the B1G, it played - and beat - Maryland every year so there’s a bit of history there.

I’m far from an expert on this, but Michigan can’t work out NIL, or pay his tuition, at another institution. And, they’re not supposed to promise NIL before the kid gets here.

I’m not sure where I put…

I’m not sure where I put Denard in the pantheon, but let’s not forget he really only had two full seasons as starting qb. As a sophomore in RichRod’s offense, he set all kinds of records. As a junior suffering in the Hoke/Borges offense, he led the team to an 11-2 record, including a win over OSU.

I covered baseball for the…

I covered baseball for the Daily - and also was a student manager for my high school baseball team - 52/53 years ago. And, I echo Dailysportseditor’s post.

Amusing anecdote (at least I think it’s amusing): a couple of years later, I was at a Cub game at Wrigley Field and had a seat along the right field line. I got there early and there were a bunch of kids yelling at Ted Sizemore, former Wolverine infielder, and asking if he was going to play that day. I yelled out, “What do you think of Moby Benedict?” Sizemore looked over, pointed at me, and I nodded. He came over and we talked for about 10 minutes about Michigan, baseball, and Moby.

Most of Michigan’s losses…

Most of Michigan’s losses have been to teams in the tournament. And, as noted below, the bullpen is an issue. It’s blown wins against a number of top teams including Louisville and Vandy.

Since I don’t watch MNF, I…

Since I don’t watch MNF, I like him going there. It would be even better for my baseball viewing if he brought John Smoltz with him.

 Might have mentioned that…

Might have mentioned that Michigan won despite an 0-10 shooting performance from Houstan. Given his on-again/off-again tendencies, that bodes well for a decent shooting performance in the B1G opener.
