Michigan Baseball vs. Oregon/Louisville 4pm

Submitted by UNCWolverine on June 5th, 2022 at 12:37 PM

Just wanted to get some Michigan baseball talk started. As I write this Oregon leads Louisville 1-0 in the bottom of the 2nd after Louisville stranded a few in the 1st.

Anyone have any knowledge of Oregon or Louisville's pitching staff and potential starters against Michigan this afternoon?

Louisville ran out their ace Jared Poland yesterday, today they started Carson Liggett who is only making his 4th start of the season, probably going to be a bullpen strategy for them against Oregon. Friday they started Garrett Schmeltz making only his 2nd start of the season. I have to assume that is they get passed Oregon they will give the ball to Riley Phillips for his 12th start of the season.

On the other side Oregon went with Christian Ciuffetelli for his 7th start against Michigan on Friday then their ace Isaac Ayon to ensure yesterday's win. Today they started Isaac Ayon for his 8th start of the season. They don't seem to have a clear candidate just from looking at the season stats to start later today should they get by Louisville.

Staying at a desert home in Joshua Tree this weekend, my girlfriend is not exactly thrilled that I'm more interested in the Michigan baseball game than the trees and cacti.

Go Blue.

Don’t worry Michigan is most assuredly more interesting than some cacti.

Both teams have been economical so far. 1-1 going into the top of the third.

Also watched some ACC Network earlier before the game. They are unbelievably pompous. The guy was basically saying how much Michigan sucks. Now granted the Big Ten is not amazingly strong in baseball but Bakich has proven to be a great coach.

What happened to the “double elimination” for the championship game?

I noticed this in the Big Ten tourney too.  The losers bracket team used to have to beat the winners bracket team TWICE to win.  When did they get rid of that?  I’m assuming it was for scheduling purposes.

Nothing happened to it, still in effect.

"Four teams are sent to each regional site (seeded one through four) for a double-elimination tournament, which means exactly what it sounds like: You have to lose twice to go home.

No. 1 plays No. 4 and No. 2 plays No. 3 to open, with the victors heading to the winner’s bracket and the losers facing an elimination game. From there, games continue to be played until only one team remains. Though theoretically anyone can win, even with an opening-round loss, winning the first game has historically been a massive indicator of success.

If a team wins its first two games, it advances to the regional finals, where it must lose twice to be eliminated but only needs a single victory to advance out of the round."

Oregon heading to the top of the fifth but not before Louisville breaks through. Hopefully Oregon can put some game pressure on Louisville here.

Louisville had a balk which SEMO was called for three of them in Louisville’s game with them. Completely had changed the complexion of this game.

Neither team has seized control but both teams have put together some nice defensive innings. Tightly contested game. Louisville coming up in the bottom of the sixth.

Missed most of the bottom of the sixth but Louisville capitalized and plated three runs. It’s 6-2 Louisville. Getting late for Oregon though there are still three innings and they’re certainly capable of stringing together hits.

Looking like it’s going to be Louisville. Their closer really put the squeeze on Oregon though that means he may not be as effective going into our game.

We got some value from Louisville’s closer throwing 50+ pitches. Oregon has plated a run and is only down 4 with runners on first and second and only one out.

Joshua Tree Park is a pretty cool place to be vacationing.  We went there when the kids were younger and had fun “rock climbing” (which was me boosting them up a boulder).
