Unverified Voracity Found This Too Late
Source needed, but too good to pass up. This image is awesome.
Message board random who posted this only linked to imgur, so it could come from anywhere. UPDATE: Melanie Maxwell of MLive is the photographer.
Burke is of course going WHEEEEEE, and then the Michigan State folk from L to R are going "welp," "welp," "welp," "I am terrified of all things," and "welp."
All the better to rip your heart out. Burke called his shot with McGary earlier in the game:
Michigan forward Mitch McGary said Appling used a spin move earlier in the game, which Michigan won 58-57, and Burke told him exactly how he was going to swipe the ball.
"He told me whenever (Appling) spins, he puts it in his right hand and it's an easy steal," McGary said. "Tim and I were just hoping he didn't hang on the rim."
Note that if it didn't work Appling would have had a choice between pressing the opportunity presented and giving Michigan a last shot of their own or holding for the final shot—it was an excellent time to go for broke.
Champions are made in the hot tub eating pizza. Greg unearths this great shot of Michigan kicker Bob Bergeron eating pizza in a hot tub that made SI:
He got to keep the pizza. Wild west back then.
CIVILIZATION. This is the end of it. There is nowhere to go but down from this.
Or this.
Gritalanche. It was a gritclone on Saturday. A toughdome.
Michigan's Mitch McGary provides much-needed energy, toughness off bench against Michigan State
It was a tickertocker.
Michigan shows its heart in critical win over MSU
It was a toughygritintestinalblockage.
Michigan finally shows grit, toughness, desperation in gutty win over rival Michigan State
It was a basketforge.
Trey Burke, Michigan show mettle in win over Michigan State
To be fair, John Beilein started it:
“We’ve had some real pretty wins here, where we did everything right and the ball went in and we just played lights-out,” Beilein explained after the win. “Today, it was all about grit.”
Michigan allowed Michigan State to rebound half of their misses. Congratulations to Mike Rothstein, who did not play along.
Burke steals a signature win for Michigan
Or at least his headline writer. You never know who does those things these days.
Make sure you use the right block M, as long as it's some shade of blinding yellow. Via Kyle Meinke, Michigan's persnicketiness about the block M:
I'm fine with this. Persnicketiness is good with the whole branding thing. but don't try to tell me that that color maize represents the colors Michigan is using on their uniforms these days. Y'all need to get your persnick on more.
BONUS: Hey, #FFCC000 is what I settled on when I was eyeballing what maize was way back in the blogspot days. I was off on the blue, using #000022. This portion of the post brought to you by things no one cares about but me.
Tiebreaker scenarios. The events of last week have caused an enormous hairball in the Big Ten standings below Indiana. Michigan actually has a not-infinitesimal shot at the title since Indiana finishes with Ohio State and Michigan. These teams are still in the hunt:
- Indiana: share clinched. Win outright by winning at home versus OSU or @ Michigan.
- OSU: win out (@ IU, Illinois), Michigan beats IU
- Michigan: win out (@ Purdue, IU), OSU beats IU
- Wisconsin/MSU: IU loses out, win UW/MSU game, don't blow last game against low-level opponent.
The chances are not good, but they're not zero. You may shake your fist at the Wisconsin and Penn State games now. In the event that a bunch of teams tie at the same record, Michigan is hurt by going 0-1 against Wisconsin (grrr) and often loses the tiebreaker and gets stuck without a bye in the first round of the Big Ten tourney, playing (grr) Penn State. If Michigan finishes 12-6 in the Big Ten that is at least a 50/50 proposition.
Lolizzo. Classic "my players destroyed the universe, but it's my fault" line:
"We were looking to get Gary a shot at the top of the key or to Keith and we didn't run it right," Izzo said. "We had a couple of freshmen in there that struggled with it. That was my fault."
Izzo : "my fault" :: humans : "just sayin'"
Also.
MINUTES FROM FRESHMEN, M/MSU, 3/3/2013
- Michigan: 93
- Michigan State: 72
Etc.: Wojo thing. Everett Cook on setting the trap. MSU highlights reveal glorious 57-0 victory for the People's Team. Five Key Plays.
That Izzo quote should actually read:
My players had the ball in open court transition after a missed free throw. But we had a couple of freshmen in there and I'm such an utter control freak that I had to call timeout and ruin a likely layup. That was my fault.
Exactly. And I'd bet Beilein was happy he called that timeout. It let us get our defense set.
I saw the photo in a tweet from Melanie Maxwell. On her Instagram account, she says she took the picture.

This one, from a half second before, is also pretty epic:
The second pic is freaking awesome. Thanks for sharing it.
Anyone else have that Bo/Leach/wolverine poster behind Bergeron on their wall back in the day?
And when I saw that picture of Bob Bergeron eating pizza, I was immediately drawn to that poster of Bo, Rick Leach, and the Wolverine. One of my all-time favorite Michigan posters, I have no idea what happened to my copy years ago, but I suspect my ex-wife had something to do with its demise back in the mid-80's after we got married. What the hell, might as well blame her!
I spent about the last half-hour after seeing that poster trying to find one on the internet with absolutely no luck whatsoever. Needless to say, I'd love to find that poster again, if anyone knows of one.
I had that poster on my bedroom wall back in the day -- and I still have it rolled up in a tube in a closet. Bo, Wolverine and not-Rick Leach Rick Leach.
the zebras would have blown the whistle for a foul. Not because it is, but because that's the kind of call that Izzo would get in his favor.
is funnier from the ha ha look at their faces perspective, but as a sports photo, the second is so much better.
Holy-hell that picture is worth Millions.
Appling - "Aww shucks, Trey got meh...I'm gonna dong punch him."
Trey - "I don't even know guys...I'm so high right now." (Towley voice)
Totally looks like the "I haz a happee" cat
Seriously, look at it
The Nebraska chancellor videos are...well I really have no words. But you gotta put Pelini up there too: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9cjG9y1gZ-s
Since it is possible now to use hex codes to create paint colors. This will come in handy for my son's room. When I was 10, my Parents and I spent 3 hours in the hardware store comparing paint chips to the Michigan sweatshirt I was wearing. So, thank you for saving me a Saturday afternoon sometime in the future.
Michigan doesn't even use the correct colors in their own Twitter/Facebook profile photos.
(Left) What they actually use.
(Right) What they are supposed to use.
It would be nice if the football pants and basketball uniforms actually used either of those shades instead of shiny highlighter yellow. I prefer the one on the right.
Honestly, I like the left one better. I don't like the contrast on the right with the paler blue and darker maize.
classic photo
You are not alone.
Back a few years ago, I did a NCAA Dynasty Report on Michigan and used the exact hex numbers. I must have found them from some official source at that time. Little did I know, but the report postulated that Michigan was put on the death penalty (through no fault of their own). This was right before the RR years began...you can all blame me.
Note that in this virtual world, Michigan did rise to NCs in 2018 & 2020. Just sayin'.
Cool, starry bra.
I can live with the evolution of Maize. I can barely live with yellow letters on yellow uniformZ, but the embroidered block M that's forbidden is the Bo Block M hat logo. What possible reason could there be for not allowing one of the most hallowed traditions in Michigan Gear History?
Depresses me just seeing it there, like a great dream you wake from wishing you could go back to...
The standards are for print media only. Letterhead, websites, e-mails. Stuff like that. Your vintage Bo hat embroidered "M" is safe.
I think the caption under the logo is to identify where it's used. So the "embroidered" M is for that purpose only, not for print media.
From what I've read, this is really only about print media. U of M marketing wants uniformity in how their brand is presented in mailers, e-mail, letterhead, etc. Since the logos for U of M have evolved a lot over time, there were plenty of options for different departments to choose from. This is just reeling that in.
under the bus and then saying "That's on me". As if taking the blame after throwing them under the bus = not throwing them under the bus in the first place. And yet, they love him in East Lansing.
Pizza photos posted at 4:30 PM while dinnertime is still probably 2 hours away? Damn you Brian Cook. Damn you!
You'll go crazy with all the combinations. Note, however, that to determine seeding other than head-to-head involves starting with your record against teams starting at the top, so a win versus IU really helps on this score. A loss probably relegates Michigan to 4-5, regardless.
If you want to maximize Michigan's seed in the tourney, then I believe that the following combo puts Michigan at #2, which is probably chalk: IU beats Ohio, Sparty beats Wisky, Michigan beats IU. (And Michigan has to beat Purdue.)
Does anyone know our record vs. Sparty over the past three years? I was thinking 5-1, but read in Wojo's column 4-2. I thought we swept them the two previous seasons.
We lost at Breslin the last two trips but the one before that was the anuerysm of leadership game which really helped to turn the program around.
Makes me wonder who the strength and conditioning coach was back then...
appling looks like sammy davis jr
Just kidding...(I think)
So there is no acceptable blue M logo? I'm fine with getting rid of the Split M, and I don't like the skinny one either, but I don't see why we can't have two different colored versions of the Block M - one maize, and one blue.
The Chancellor videos are amazing. The best one isn't even posted - it's the one titled "Great Things."
Priceless photos. And I've never seen that SI pic of Bergeron.
Maize & Blue Split Block M rules.
Neon yellow does not.
I never ate a ear of corn colored like my highlighter marker.
My lawn.
Off.
I couldn't help myself.
Looks like he is trying to give Burke the old reach around...after Burke picked his pocket.
Melanie Maxwell is a hell of a photographer btw. Her Michigan football photos for annarbor.com are always very interesting. She has a way of capturing the shot at just the right time.
...an approved M being painted on Crisler Center's floor prior to the game with IU.
I have always been partial to the split block M. Had a coffee cup forever with that on it.
