Thursday Recruitin' Shall Not Pass Comment Count

Today's recruiting roundup covers the latest on—you guessed it—Laquon Treadwell and Derrick Green, more coach quotes on Denzel Ward, 2014 updates, and more.

Two-For-Two?

ALL HOPE IS LOST wait what oh my condolences

Mike Farrell's latest Mind of Mike article contains a couple very relevant bits to Michigan, so long as you can get past the opening where he seemingly takes credit for Da'Shawn Hand being 2014's #1 overall recruit:

Around last April, I tweeted that Woodbridge (Va.) Woodbridge Senior defensive end Da'Shawn Hand was my hands-down choice for the No. 1 player in the country for the class of 2014. Since then, numerous recruiting sites have tabbed Hand as their No. 1 guy, while our first 2014 five-stars will be released next month.

I'd like to go ahead and take credit for Glenn Robinson III being very good at basketball because I'm the only one who's said that, right? Right. You owe me one, GRIII. Anyway, the word from Farrell is good on Derrick Green...

Green has listed the Ducks as one of his finalists and liked his trip to the state when he was at The Opening, but Oregon has always been a long shot in my opinion, even for an official visit.

It's unclear if Oregon will back off as part of getting [five-star RB Thomas] Tyner back in the fold or not, but it shouldn't matter -- Green isn't going there. I know I've said it before, but I'll say it again -- Green appears to be the perfect fit as a Big Ten running back and with his other two favorites, Auburn and Tennessee, having coaches on very hot seats, Michigan has to be the final destination, right? It makes sense, but as we know, sometimes recruiting makes no sense.

...and Laquon Treadwell, who as it turns out had a very valid reason for not taking his official visit last weekend:

The only thing more impressive that wide receiver LaQuon Treadwell's ability on the field (and he has been playing like a five-star this season) is his consistency when it comes to not taking visits. Treadwell has now set up visits with Missouri, Ole Miss, Michigan and Oklahoma this month alone and won't make any of them.

The passing of his uncle this past weekend kept him from a big visit weekend in Ann Arbor, but I still think the Wolverines are his future home until he actually takes one of the two trips he wants to take to OU and Oklahoma State.

Hey, that sounds like good news! [EDIT: The recruiting angle, obviously, not the uncle part. Condolences to the Treadwell family for their loss.] Let's take this as further evidence to wait until the facts are in before jumping to wild conclusions after every bit of recruiting news, please.

Illinois recruiting guru Edgy Tim has more on Treadwell's future plans in the Chicago Tribune:

He most likely will make all five of his allotted official visits (Michigan, Michigan State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Ole Miss) after his high school season ends.

Treadwell's recruitment is far from over, obviously. He's running out of time to find a school that can make the same impression that Michigan has over six visits (plus a presumed official), however, and I'd be surprised if Michigan State is a serious contender.

Chicago-Area Defensive Linemen—I'm Sorry

Tim Sullivan catches up with Denzel Ward's head coach for more on Michigan's latest commitment ($):

"[Michigan and Purdue] were the first to see film of him," [Hales Franciscan head coach Randall] Townsel said. "He's a kid that hasn't played much football - or any football - before, but he's come to work very hard and he's very coachable, so he's learning. He's very competitive, he moves very well. He used to play basketball, so this isn't just some big kid. This kid can run and move, and he's agile, and on film he's just dominant in the games that they saw."

Townsel also says that Ward plays next to 6'5", 260-pound guard Jordan Watson, and further down the line is 6'4" Jeremiah Douchee.

I hope Hales Franciscan has a replete pre-game meal budget.

In other commit news, Sam Webb caught up with Jourdan Lewis, who talked about the possibility of playing offense at the next level ($):

Sam Webb: You contribute in other aspects of the game. We see you do your thing in special teams. We see you do your thing offensively. A lot of people want to know, is it definitely defense on the next level for you? Or would if they came to you and said, “hey, we want you to be a receiver.” Would you be open to something like that?

Jourdan Lewis: “Of course, I love playing receiver. That’s what I started playing off in the beginning. But you know coach wants me to play defense. You know I just got to play defense.”

Sam Webb: So you will play wherever they want you to play?

Jourdan Lewis: “Yeah, I am an athlete.”

Personally, I think Lewis's greatest upside is at cornerback, but he could also be a dangerous big-play threat as a slot receiver and return man. He's very good at making defenders miss in tight quarters and has very solid speed; if Michigan can't land Treadwell and decide they're more than set in the secondary, he could make a move to offense, as could Gareon Conley.

Etc.

Lapeer (MI) tight end Kyle Rachwal doesn't hold a Michigan offer, but that didn't stop him from naming the Wolverines as his favorite after he visited for Michigan State—the third time he's visited Ann Arbor this season—per Tim Sullivan ($, info in header):

"At this point, absolutely Michigan would be the one that I have the most interest in," he said. "I would say Michigan would be the front-runner right now because of the visits and everything, but I'm obviously going to be open to offers from anybody."

Rachwal is listed at 6'3", 225 lbs., so if Michigan offered it would likely be as a U-back (H-back—think Khalid Hill).

According to Scout's Michael Clark, VA QB Caleb Henderson would like to decide where to attend college soon ($, info in header):

“The 17th of November — me, my mom, my uncle, and my brother are actually going up to East Lansing to see Michigan State play. I think we are also going to try to see a Michigan game and an Ohio State game. ”

With three potential visits in the near future, Henderson said he will likely make his decision next month.

The three schools mentioned above all make his top five—he doesn't mention the other two schools, though in-state squads Virginia and Virginia Tech have both offered—but only MSU has extended a scholarship among the trio. If Michigan or Ohio State comes through with an offer, they could vault to the top of his list—the Wolverines have played it close to the vest as to which 2014 QB they've got at the top of their board, not offering any prospect at the position up to this point.

247's Steve Wiltfong has a free article on MI DE Malik McDowell, which includes this tidbit from his father:

Putting one foot in front of the other wasn’t always easy for fast-growing Malik McDowell.

Just ask his father Greg McDowell’s wallet.

“He broke quite a few things, not intentionally,” the elder McDowell laughed.

The wallet, unfortunately, had no comment.

massblue,

Michigan's policy appears to be the following concerning a verbal commit visiting other schools.

1.  The commit's spot is no longer held in the class and his scholarship offer gets pulled.

2.  Michigan will no longer recruit the former commit.  No second chance.

Whether number 2 above is concrete or not, I don't know.  It is just speculation based on the precedence of Phaoroh Brown and Dawson's high school coach's comments about Dawson's decommitment scenario with Michigan.  "Michigan is no longer recruiting him".

So Dawson wants to explore his options and check out schools like Florida and LSU.  I get that.  I also get that he may want to stay closer to home given the loss of his father and wanting to be close to his support system in Michigan.   He probably may want to stay close to home to help support his mom.  Given Michigan's policy above, Michigan is no longer an option if he wants to stay close to home.  This only really leaves Ohio, MSU, and Notre Dame as his best options to stay close to home.

So given the scenario, do you really expect his list not to have Ohio and MSU on it?

At this juncture, since Dawson committed before he was 100% sure of his decision that led to his decommitment and Michigan no longer being an option (probably not his choice), and he just has to do what he thinks is best for him at this point.  There will be no hate or anger from me.  I wish him luck and hope he finds what he is seeking.  I only wish he hadn't committed until he was 100% sure.

I'm not sure about #2. Here's why:

  • Pharoah Brown never told the coaches he was visiting Oregon prior to visiting and found out through other means. Brown was intentionally deceiving and I think led to the coaching staff no longer recruiting him.
  • David Dawson has multiple flirts with visiting other places, spoke with the coaches, and then firmed up at Michigan. According to the INTERNET, the Michigan coaches found out about Dawson talking with other schools (planning visits?) and were notified by a Florida coach who was being a stand-up guy (or knew it would end this way maybe?). Dawson didn't take his visit but it sure sounds like the intent was there without notifying the Michigan coaches. Wilcher's reaction "ship is sunk" or whatever he said makes a lot of sense when combined with that story.

I'm not saying the Dawson story is 100% factual, might be total speculation, but it would explain a lot. I don't hold anything against Dawson - he's 18, lost his dad, didn't get to check anywhere else out - but I don't blame the coaches for cutting ties when committed recruits proactively deceive them.

It makes me wonder how Treadwell can have Michigan State in his top 5. Let's say hypothetically he picks MSU. Wouldn't that be a little weird seeing all these guys he seems to have bonded with so well, including Shane Morris, on the other sideline tearing it up?

I just don't see anyway he ends up there. Who would want to waste a free trip to East Lansing?

These are 17-18 year old kids.  Do you remember when you were that age?  I had no clue what I wanted to do then, and my choices for schools were all over the map.  Thankfully, I chose Michigan, but if I was a highly sought after HS football recruit, I am pretty sure I would also be all over the map with my choice of schools too.

I'm kidding (a bit).  I do remember being that age, and watching my high school quarterback get recruited by alot of big ten schools (he ultimately chose Michigan).  I always wondered how he coudl wear a Penn State shirt one day and a Michigan the next and an Ohio State the next during the recruitment phase. Granted, I was never in his shoes and recruited... but to have a legitimate blank slate, putting your "favorite team" and fanhood aside would seem like a difficult thing to do.  But... players do it all the time, even so far is growing up an Ohio State Fan and then going to Michigan or vise-versa.   From a fans perspective, considering going to another school (and then playing against my favorite team at some point) would be preposterous!  (Then again, as I said before, I was never in their shoes..never recruited, so I don't know what it's like).

"I would rather be a doorkeeper...." Psalms 84:10. lol.

TE and QB seem to be the positions they're being most judicious with as far as offers go. All of the guys you named are potential offers whom if offered would probably have Michigan at the top of their list. Blake Williams (Romeo, MI) is another you could add to that group.

Nic Weishar is an offer and is more of the Funchess type; he's very interested in Michigan as well.

Ethan Wolf (Minster, OH) is one who may get offered (just visited) but has other schools he's interested in as well.

Who actually gets offers out of the top group is a good question at this point. Rachwal has visited three times, is likely to visit at least once more for another game and really, really wants the Michigan offer. He's a similar player to Hill but plays a bit more of a physical game.

You failed to bold the last portion of that quote from the article. Farrell is saying despite Michigan being the best choice for Green, he thinks Green is thinking somewhere else. This was discussed thoroughly on Rivals. Draw your own conclusions but Farrell doesn't think Green's coming to Michigan, and he's by far the most tuned in to Green's recruitment.

Low hanging fruit and all, but Farrell, as is clear from the article, doesnt take credit for Treadwell being a great player, which is the analogy you try to draw in taking a shot at Farrell (you say your thinking Robinson is good leads to him being good). You are mixing ontologies. Instead Ferrell claims he was first to put him in the #1 category, and states that others have since done the same. He does not make an assertion of cause and effect, though one might read that into the text due to the sequential framing. I know people love to hate Farrell, but come on. Farrell thinking Hand is #1 actually does influence whether Hand is chosen as #1, especially by Rivals. He does not say, or imply, that his thinking Hand is #1 influences Hand's ability, which is the only way your analogy works (though we could argue that it has a self-fulfilling effect - being ranked highly influences one's eagerness to work hard and play well).

where a recruit is going to go. These decisions are often more emotional than logical. If Green for example decides he doesn't want to got to Tenn of Auburn because they lose their coaches it doesn't mean Michigan rises to the top. If Green doesn't feel 100% comfortable with Michigan he will add new schools to his list or he could always fall back on Virginia Tech. And if we start hearing in the next month or two that Green is adding new schools to his list that would be a strong indication that Michigan isn't a real player. We'll see.

It looks like the time might be coming to sh*t or get off the pot with Caleb Henderson.  I wonder what the thinking is with the 2014 QB offers.  The two most obvious explanations are that either (1) the coaches are busy with game prep and haven't had a chance to thoroughly review film or (2) they have reviewed the film but haven't been sold on anyone (or at least haven't found much separation between the candidates).

It is beginning to look like Dawson may go to OSU or MSU (or FLA) accoridng to a TomV article on Wolverine Nation.  I just don't get that.  After visiting Florida he says he rushed himself into a bad decision with UM because he didn't take the time to weigh his options.  Now he's saying he wants to look at a few other schools closer to home due to what his family has been through in the past year, thinking maybe he should stay close to home and his support system.  Blows my mind.  What is it that OSU and MSU are providing him that UM isn't?  Why is his rushed decision to UM a bad decision, but OSU and MSU appear like better options?  I just don't get it.

I commented on this above and will try to paraphrase it here.

So when Dawson says his rushed decision to commit to Michigan was bad, I think what that means is he burned that bridge and they are no longer an option.  I don't think it has anything to do with MSU or Ohio having more to offer, only that they are still options to be close to home and Michigan is not (current lack of an offer).

It does make me wonder though.  If Dawson now has come to the conclusion that he wants to stay close to home, is there anything he can do to open that door to Michigan again?  Could he get them to reoffer if he was now 100% sure in that choice? (not saying that he is)

Given the very sad and unique circumstances in Dawson's case, I would hope that the coaches would be a little more willing to soften that stance here.  In addition to the emotion gut punch that he has taken, he might have lost an extremely important personal adviser.  I'm sure that the other recruits would understand why an exception was made in this case.

I totally agree, as long as the coaching staff still wants him regardless of the rule.  There's a chance they weren't thrilled with Dawson even before he decided to visit Florida.  He committed very quickly and who knows how well the coaches knew him at that time.

No matter what, I hope it works out for the kid.  That's a big loss to suffer at an early age.

She goes by the name ---- gator. She is an 11 on a ten scale and has a better body than Upton. Florida paid for the trip. End of story. I would have took that trip too at age 17. Hoke's policy is stupid, because it is over the top.
