The battle of Williamsbirds [Marc-Grégor Campredon]

Michigan raised the banner, introduced their freshmen, and started a hopeful season with a 12-point win over a team that projects to be one of the better in the MAC. They also learned a lot of things about themselves as Juwan Howard shuffled through multiple lineups trying to find a good fit.

Four point guard types got their opportunities in the first half with starter Davante Jones in some early foul trouble, then Eli Brooks (moved over from his starting SG position), Frankie Collins, and finally Kobe Bufkin for a stretch at the end of the first half. Transfer PG DeVante’ Jones produced two of his patented steals for points, plus a pair of assists in 7 minutes before picking up his second foul and kicking off the point guard carousel. He added three assists to one turnover in another 11 minutes of the second half. The freshmen had seven and four minutes, with Collins looking confident in a defensive/secondary role. The rest of the time was served by Eli Brooks, who was his solid self on defense and more of a floor general than normal on offense, especially on a key sequence in the 2nd half when he slithered past Mbala for a layup then ran at him again only and over-the-back passed to an open Terrence Williams III.

The newcomers were close to their billings. Moussa Diabate showed off electric athleticism and ludicrous length, plus a well-above-freshman level of vision, including an early no-look pass to fellow five-star freshman Caleb Houstan, who proceeded to bury the first three of his career. That was part of an enticing yet short first half for Michigan’s top-rated recruit; he scoring eight in the frame before going out for 10 minutes with his second foul. His length also proved quite consequential as Michigan was finally putting this game away late, tipping out a Jones’s free throw miss to give his team an extra clock-killing possession.

But it wasn’t just fouls keeping Houstan mostly on the sidelines, as his defensive feet were not enough to prevent Buffalo’s Jeenathan Williams from having a career day: 32 points on 24.5 shot equivalents, and most of those left-handed floaters.

The Williams problem helped the Bulls cut Michigan’s 51-36 halftime lead down to five points. Things started to go sour after Jones and Hunter Dickinson trapped Buffalo’s other star forward, Josh Mballa, on the sideline, and Jones picked up a very questionable third foul as Mballa tripped out of there. The ensuing possession saw Dickinson fall asleep on a recovery, and Buffalo buried a three, inducing a timeout from Howard. Buffalo continued their run as Houstan traveled off a dribble handoff, Mbala cut it to ten on his quick drive on Dickinson and Johns, and then Michigan turned it over again on an offensive foul.

That’s were things also started to get “chippy” as Mbala got in a free hard foul on Johns under the basket after his teammate picked up the tab first. The second pair of double techs were issued to Dickinson and the Bull to whom he was registering his offense. Williams got another floater to go after Brooks launched a long two early in the shot clock. A third set of double-techs came down shortly after, during the aftermath of a weird play where Williams slid under Dickinson, and two officials made opposing block/charge calls. Williams took his tech smiling and buried a three to put Buffalo within two possessions.

The answer to Williams, Janeethan, turned out to be Williams, Terrance, who took over at the four from there. The sophomore managed to stay in front of the first great enemy of the season, forcing the offense back to Mbala versus Michigan’s bigs, and the three he hit off of Brooks’s afore mentioned over-the-back put Michigan back up 8 points with just over five minutes to go. Even more consequential was his defense a minute later, as J.Williams tried to go left, found himself in T.Williams’s chest, and got called for both a travel and a flop warning. Brooks hit a floater off of Spain action to put the Wolverines up 12 with under 4 minutes, and then repeated his behind-the-back move to Houstan, now back for his final appearance, who canned the three-pointer and put the game out of reach for good.

TW5 also seemed to bring out the best in his classmate and old AAU teammate Dickinson, who finished with 27 points on 21 shot equivalents and showed a new spin move on the baseline when Buffalo focused on his favorite shoulder. His Buffalo counterpart also fouled out, and the replacement immediately got bodied out of the building on a box-out that left Dickinson all alone to collect a missed Houstan three.

Adrian Nunez had perhaps his best game as a Wolverine, with 5 points in 8 real minutes with Brooks at point, though his perimeter defense remained exploitable. Brandon Johns got 23 minutes in varied roles but it was one of his less impactful nights as he turned down a couple of three pointers to drive and contributing to some of the issues against Buffalo’s bucket man. two-big lineup of Dickinson and Diabate generally struggled to prevent the up-tempo Bulls from taking advantage of Dickinson up high, though it did lead to some highlight drives for Diabate and an impenetrable sea of arms when both bigs were set. It does seem those two shouldn’t be out together with Houstan or Johns.

Howard now gets to go back and watch the tape to figure out who should be on the court together. If the opener was any indication, it’s going to be an interesting mix, and a fascinating season.

I know it's the first game and everything and they're a mid-major and none of us have watched college basketball in months but...Buffalo is good, right?  It sure seemed like they could play.  And they didn't  seem too rusty like most teams do in the opener (even Michigan looked red hot for a period of time, pretty uncharacteristic for the early season). I wasn't sure how impressed I'm supposed to be with Buffalo and Michigan but it sure seems to me like they could find themselves ranked at some point and be a sleeper pick to make a deep run in the tournament. I'll be rooting for them the rest of the way.

Buffalo is a very good mid-major team. They're one of the picks to win the MAC and you can see why; they have two players in Jeenathan Williams and Ronaldo Segu who look like high-major players. They are one of the more experienced teams in all of CBB. They were one of the best rebounding teams in the country last year and still seem to be very good as they fought Michigan to a draw in that department. Additionally, they're currently ranked #88 per Kenpom and they have a shot at ending the season in the top 75 of the NET rankings, which would give Michigan a Q2 win to open the season. At the very least, this will be a Q3 win unless Buffalo completely underperforms. Buffalo could even end up being a round 1 upset team in the NCAAT.

Agree. And they lost to Ohio in the MAC championship last year before Ohio did well in the NCAA tournament. Since Buffalo is the 4th oldest team in the nation, and return a good portion of their team from last year, I wouldn’t be surprised to see them win the MAC this year and be a tough out come tourney time.

I think this is a good take. Buffalo seems good, and they have had some success recently, but they are the 4th most experienced team in the nation, they are already near their ceiling. Michigan meanwhile has a lot of important young players who should get better hopefully. Buffalo should be good in the MAC and Michigan should keep getting better. Agreed though, go Buffalo, snd good job by M to still get a comfortable win with many coachable moments both good and bad

Buffalo is a very solid and balanced team.  I would not expect Janeeth to make all those difficult touch floaters and layups every night.  He was feeling it and kept them in the game while we were experimenting a bit.  He is a good player and I am sure he will get his this season but many of the shots he made were not high percentage shots.

Take away from this is that T Williams can be a defensive stopper -- and we needed one big time tonight.

The officiating seemed to include too many ticky-tacky fouls.  It played to our advantage in the first half with Collins providing good bench minutes.  Would've like to see Collins some in the 2nd half -- Jones is good, but Collins provides great energy off the bench and that could help to slow down the Buffalo point man (Segu).

A good game for Juwan and staff.  Got the win but have plenty to discuss with the team.  Defensively it’s probably going to take some time to get back to where we were last year (if we can, sans Franz).  And man, we’ve got to do better on FTs.  Not only did we shoot only 60%, but we missed two front ends in a row.  But it’s a W against a solid opponent.

I was at the game.   All in all a solid win.  They have a lot to work on but that's to be expected, especially now that they are a younger team.    A couple of times when the game got real tight they leaned on Brooks calming experience and he did what he needed to do.

This team has a lot of upside and at times were an absolute blast to watch.   Should be a very fun season.

Buffalo is a good team, three guys who would be in the rotation for almost any team in the country, tons of experience.  They played hard and weren't intimidated.  Probably better than at least three or four Big10 teams.

A great first win, which should build some confidence but also provide plenty of motivation by pointing out the need to get much better.  We missed way too many free throws, and Bufkin gave away 2 points at the end of the half with a terrible freshman mistake, fouling at the other end with less than 2 seconds left.

TWill was great, Caleb and Diabate showed why they are rated so high.  Hunter was the difference, playing a dominant game while Buffalo got almost nothing out of their bigs.

I loved TWill's game yesterday.  Hunter's 27 points aside, it was TWill's second half scoring, rebounding, and shutting down Buffalo's JeeWill when he'd been unstoppable to that point that saved the game.

Still, I think I like the idea of TWill coming off the bench a la Chaundee last year -- great energy, defensive effort, and dependable scoring  to be used either against the opponent's efforts to give their starters a breather OR to match up against whomever it turns out to have the hot hand.

Good test early against a good team who had experience and the exact type of athletic wings that we don't have a good person to defend.  Hopefully TWill is that guy and he played well.  Hunter had an iffy game on D but was dominant on offense.

Gotta make free throws and this isn't even a game.  I am a little concerned that the volume of threes was low, but still TBD.

I liked seeing Collins and Diabate out there, but not sure I agree with the amount of positivity they got in this writeup.  Collins was fine, but didn't contribute much in his short time.   Diabate was what we expected, a couple of huge highlights mixed into some wild erratic plays.  He's the JJ to Hunters Cade.  That three he took was ugly.  His passing was encouraging.

Feel bad for Zeb because theres a role for a third guard and also a defensive matchup for 6-5 wings that he might be able to fill if he were healthy.

I had a really good feeling with Collins out there.  He was racing the ball up court a la Mike Smith, and the offense clicked -- +5 in 7 minutes.  (Bufkin was -5 in 4 minutes, but hopefully he'll settle in after a few games.  I'm guessing Zeb will be competing with Kobe for minutes more than anybody else.)

While I'm pretty sure this team can shoot, the number of missed free throws is a bit disturbing. Missed front ends were especially grating.

It seems like Juwan has a lot of pieces to play with. Sometimes though, that can work against you.

Should be an interesting season. I can't wait to see how it turns out

It was exactly what they were expected to do (by Vegas and Torvik) as a top 10 team, but Buffalo missed a ton of threes and had they gone just 34%, that's a tie game, However, they also made a lot of floaters and midrange twos that seemed a bit on the lucky side to offset the bad three point luck.

I do think it'll be interesting to see how Juwan fits these pieces together.

Right now, it appears like they have five bigs with a huge logjam of guys that are essentially fours, a few guards and no true wings.  The composition of this team is a bit wonky.  It will be important for Bufkin to develop and for Houstan to be able to better stay in front of wings.

So much talent though and I have confidence this staff will have them in position for another conference title and final four run.

Meh..I was underwhelmed I guess as they say a win is a win but that was not very impressive especially the 2nd half..defense was bad and very few turnovers created..Neess improvement

DetroitDan

2nd half was a shock as the Jeenathan seemed to score at will for a while.  Then we brought in Will(iams).

Also, Jones seemed to struggle a bit, although at least one of the foul calls against him seemed unwarranted.  Jones + Collins gives us pretty good depth there, it would seem.

So Dickinson - Diabate

Johns - Diabate - Williams

Houstan - Williams

Brooks - (Jackson or Bufkin)

Jones - Collins

with Nunez, Barnes, and Tschetter in reserve (and Jace)

Seems like we should be able to handle most things that are thrown against us, but it took awhile last night to come up with the TWill solution.

Don't think it was coincidental that we were plus 14 in Jones 18 minutes on the floor. Like Mike Smith last year, think he is absolutely a key to success.

To get where it wants to go this team really needs someone to step up and fill the third guard role.  Right now it is a pretty empty void.  Obviously it is early and some injuries there have not helped, but hopefully we see a third guard emerge and fill quality minutes before conference play starts.

Caveat: only was able to watch the second half. That said, takeaways:

-T-Will could be the x-factor. Great energy, looked great on D (stayed in front of his man, forced them into bad decisions/TOs), and hit some big shot on the other end. He looked ready to take up the mantle of "Michigan player who gets under the skin of everyone associated with the opponent."

-Liked Devante's vision on the floor. Made a couple of passes that really impressed.

-Bench depth will be huge late in the season. Loved to see JH roll everybody out and really see what he had to work with.

-LOTS to be done on perimeter defense. Thought rotations looked bad the whole half and the gave up a ton of wide open looks. This is pretty much expected with the amount of unseasoned guys out there, and I fully expect it to improve.

-Hunter/Eli are known qtys, didn't disappoint.

All in all, good W. Buffalo is going to be one of those teams you don't want to draw round 1 if they perform as expected in MAC play.

The negatives appeared to be some defensive lapses and free throw shooting.

The positives appeared more numerous.  Dickinson looked as solid as we had hoped with a monster game.  Brooks was his usual reliable self.  T. Williams was impressive all around with a high motor and an ability to get buckets.  Houstan and Diabate looked impressive, comfortable on the floor, making smart plays and as highly talented as hoped.  Jones looked solid at the point with only one turnover - turnovers were apparently an issue for him in the past.  Collins showed potential.

Buffalo seems like a good team, possibly tournament caliber with a couple elite players, so this was a great win to start the season.  Michigan showed that it has the potential to be a championship caliber team with a lot of talent, experience and depth.  They need to clean up some of the defensive issues and shoot a bit better at the line.  But all of this should improve with time and experience.   And they need to stay healthy.
