Officially official according to the umich twitter feed and their grainy unembeddable video thing. Devin channels his inner Mr. Burns at this news, and so should you.

It is obviously huge to have Gardner around for a fifth year in 2014, when Brady Hoke's OL recruiting will be emerging into upper-class years, Derrick Green is a sophomore, and Drake Harris is wearing the #1*. Getting a fifth year out of any starting QB is big time, especially one with as much upside as Gardner. Since he's pretty raw right now, he should use it unless he absolutely blows up in 2013—a problem I will take if it goes down like that.

Also a bonus is this presumably pushes the Morris/Speight/true freshman battle out to 2015, when Morris is (probably) a redshirt sophomore and Speight a redshirt freshman. Not starting a freshman QB is a nice thing.

*[Projection based on awesome dream. Also, Drake Harris is made of of mushroom marshmallows, the offensive line mutates into candybears, and Michigan beats East Magellanic Cloud for the Universe Title. Suck it, Bama.]

That. Is. One. Awesome. Dream.

Mostly because of Mushroom Marshmallows(psychedelic?), but also, I wants me some Drake Harris #1 jersey please and thank you.

We finally know now!

The best aspect of this news is that DG will have at least 2 years if he wants it and the other QB's get critical and ample time to learn and improve before being thrust into action.

If Devin does go off like a mad man in 2013 and he feels the need to take advantage of that and go pro, then that just means we had a great season and we should still be fine in 2014, albeit young unless Bellomy starts clicking and becomes a solid QB.

In a nutshell, either scenario looks to be a win-win situation.

By that time, we'll have a better receiving corp, Devin's skills as a passer/leader/field general should be fully developed, and our overall talent and experience level will be much better at most positions.  Athletically, Devin has the skill to be the Big Ten's top QB by that point.  Can't wait.

the schedule flips back to last year's, with most of the tough games on the road.  It will be huge to have a seasoned veteran running the offense for those road games and not a red shirt freshman.  Probably worth a win or two over the course of the year.

I really feel like the offense will be very entertaining/interesting with a dominating (hopefully) O-Line and pro style leanings, with a QB that could take off and do very un-pro style things...
Is this a glimpse of what could have possibly happened under Mo?

I hope Bellamy improves enough to be the backup QB this season and we can RS Morris this fall. Morris will compete with Bellomy for the back up spot in 2014. Speight will get to RS in 2014 and mentor under Morris in 2015 as a backup and I'm sure the next great QB will be in his RS season. But you never know how things will pan out, may be Bellomy improves so much that he is the starter in his senior season of 2015. Brady Hoke gets this depth concept!

This is great news! The future of our QBs look bright.

One question: So apparently the school initially thought we couldn't apply for his RS until after he graduated, and then according to WolverineNation, the school was informed BY WolverineNation that you can apply anytime.

So...how did the school not know about this earlier or ask the B1G? Or better yet, you would think B1G would have heard we wanted to apply for a RS and would have spoken up?

I'm just a little confused how something so big seeped through the cracks

It still makes no sense to me, and I haven't heard a logical explanation for why Devin's redshirt took 2 years to announce when everyone else I've ever heard of (in any sport) who gets injured gets a decision by the end of that year. And I don't buy that Michigan was confused or thought a decision could only be made after he graduates (when has that ever been the case for anyone; that decision has huge implications for the student-athlete and the program for planning for the future).

I can't think of an ulterior motive, just genuinely confused.

This is such good news!  This will be SO helpful, to help develop some depth at QB, and allow Shane and Wilton to develop without the pressure to produce right away.

Like Macklemore says....This is F**king awesome!!!

(Pretend I wasn't too lazy to embed the clip of that line here)

Good for him, he needs to take advantage of this opportunity and try become a pocket passer with scrambling abilities so he can be ready for NFL..he can be elite but its up to him to put in the work

i don't see Shane redshirting this year because we still do not have any depth at the qb position.  Plus Bellomy is not that good. If SM redshirts and  anything happens to DG then you have Bellomy and walk on qb  playing.   That won't be a nice look.

the hope that it takes us one step closer to a time when we don't have half the internet clamoring to play a freshman at every position.
