Blimpy's does some recruiting
just read on the wolverine.com's d-line hotboard that Ray Drew, the number 18 player nationally, wants to take a visit to Ann Arbor. Not only to see the campus and the team, but to go to Blimpy's!!!! Here's to Blimpy Burger serving us well in food service and recruiting as well

Hopefully he's ready to get yelled at and eat a good, but extremely overrated burger.
October 1st, 2010 at 3:14 PM ^
I frequented Blimpy Burger for a couple years, and I don't think I ever got yelled at for anything. My friend was, humorously, asked if he had a note from his doctor [fair enough, when one orders a quint w/ cheese, egg and bacon]; and I have heard the staff sigh when newbs ask for condiments out of order... but I think the vast majority of the people who have worked there in the last 8 years just don't have the personality to give you any guff.
October 1st, 2010 at 3:19 PM ^
I've seen someone get yelled at for being on the phone.
October 1st, 2010 at 3:46 PM ^
I got yelled at for being on the phone. I then left immediately before ordering.

Out of anger or out of fear?
October 1st, 2010 at 4:16 PM ^
Anger.
October 1st, 2010 at 5:04 PM ^
a lunch joint around the corner from my office here in Chicago that has signs posted about "no cell phones allowed". When ignored/transgressed, the fire alarm goes off in excruciatingly loud fashion. Without fail.
So, you may want to avoid the place if you happen to be in the Loop.
Good sandwiches, though.
October 1st, 2010 at 6:25 PM ^
What place is that? Takes some gumption to try to keep people of their phones in the Loop during lunch. The first place that came to mind that might do something like that is the Berghoff, but I don't remember ever hearing a fire alarm in there.
And continuing the Chicago theme - Blimpy employees have never yelled at someone like Wiener's Circle people. Not even close.
October 1st, 2010 at 10:37 PM ^
at randolph and franklin. the name escapes me but they do put the most meat ever on a sandwich.
October 1st, 2010 at 10:57 PM ^
Looks like you're talking about Perry's Deli.
Wish I would have known about it when I worked down there.
October 1st, 2010 at 7:45 PM ^
your lost

I don't know who's -'ing but i find value in your posts.
October 1st, 2010 at 4:16 PM ^
I've seen them yell at a little kid for sitting down and having his parents order for him. They said he's big enough to start doing it himself. Which may have been true, but I think it intimidated the hell out of the kid (who looked to be about 7 or 8). It made my own son (who was still small enough to get away with this, at the time) not want to go back for a long time.
October 1st, 2010 at 5:31 PM ^
My wife wouldn't get yelled at, but when she'd order the veggie burger they'd always make fun of her and act like it was a big pain to go in the back to the freezer to grab one. I always laughed.
The funniest thing I saw was a forty-ish man ordering a single. The guy asked "Is that for a child? No? Then how about a double."

My favorite Blimpy moment:
Old woman working the grill: What kind of cheese you want?
My friend: What kind of cheese do you have?
Woman: We have every kind of cheese. What do you want?
Friend: I'll have Mozzarella.
Woman: We don't have mozzarella! Get to the back of the line, and be ready by the time you're back here!
Classic.
October 1st, 2010 at 11:27 PM ^
Similar to my first Blimpy's moment when I was a wee Freshman...and Blimpy's virgin.
Counterguy: What'll you have?
Dumb Freshman (me): A cheeseburger
Counterguy: No shit. What is this your first time here?
Dumb Freshman (me): Uh....yeah.
Counterguy: Jesus Christ....normally you'd be at the back of the line, but I'll give you a break. Anything else?
Dumb Freshman (me): French fries.
Counterguy: Real fucking original.

Good but over-rated?

Oh oh okay...
October 1st, 2010 at 3:29 PM ^
"good, but extremely overrated"
He said Blimpy's, not In-N-Out.
October 1st, 2010 at 4:27 PM ^
Uncool.
October 1st, 2010 at 6:32 PM ^
It's good, very good. For a fast food burger. For non-West Coasters, it's basically on par with Five Guys (reasonable minds can differ). But it's not any better than a good burger-specialty joint.
I liken it to The Matrix. All things considered, it's much better than comparable stuff being produced. But is it life-altering on par with the way a lot of people talk about it? Not really.
(now engendering pro-In-N-Out and pro-Matrix backlash....)

don't make me go animal style on you.
October 1st, 2010 at 4:45 PM ^
woah, I just had In N Out for the first time this past weekend. It was pretty amazing
October 1st, 2010 at 7:49 PM ^
In N out is so overrated. I ordered it animal style and it looked like an animal jizzed all over my burger.
October 1st, 2010 at 4:25 PM ^
overpriced as well
October 1st, 2010 at 6:37 PM ^
Maybe, maybe from a strictly gastronomic viewpoint, Bilmpy's is overrated. But you have to buy into the unique character, the local institution-ness, the ability to turn eating into a test of will and stomach elasticity, and the endless options for customization as a whole. Then Blimpy's is awesome. If you're cynical about all that other shit, you're probably inclined to be contrary about the quality of the food also. And vice versa.
October 1st, 2010 at 10:28 PM ^
I agree, I hope they don't make the BIG MAN mad
October 1st, 2010 at 2:53 PM ^
exceptionally rude and forceful with him. I'd be depressed if I came all the way out there and they were polite.

Someone needs to tell this kid about Zingerman's ASAP B.
October 1st, 2010 at 3:16 PM ^
Zingerman's Roadhouse for Mac and Cheese. It's so fucking delicious. Food Network even rated Roadhouse Mac and Cheese #1 in comfort food!
October 1st, 2010 at 5:04 PM ^
...BGSU game and had the Mac and Cheese among other things. It is as good as advertised. Love the Roadhouse -- the food tastes and looks great, the service is tremendous and you know that they simply care about your experience.
October 1st, 2010 at 5:07 PM ^
What's the Zingerman's Roadhouse. Is that a dish/sandwich or a new dining establishment? If the latter, I'm pretty excited.
Actually, if the former, I'm pretty excited too.
...
... I really miss Zingerman's...
October 1st, 2010 at 5:49 PM ^
By 94. I like it much better than the deli. Regular sit-down place. Highly recommend.
October 1st, 2010 at 6:27 PM ^
I haven't been there, but I'd always heard that the Roadhouse was crap, especially in comparison with the deli.
WILL SOMEONE TELL ME WHAT TO THINK?!?
October 1st, 2010 at 7:33 PM ^
is very good. There's more diverse selection of food, but I will go there for only one thing...... Mac and Cheese.
mmmmm, Mac and Cheese.....
October 1st, 2010 at 3:32 PM ^
I'd rather tell him about Maize and Blue deli.
Yeah... I went there.
October 1st, 2010 at 3:46 PM ^
I'd rather tell him about China Gate.
Yeah, I went there. (Way too many times in college.)
October 1st, 2010 at 4:43 PM ^
Think I'll go there tonight...
October 1st, 2010 at 6:28 PM ^
Chef Jan's got like six of 'em.
But seriously, I've never, ever had kung pao chicken as good as that at China Gate. I keep trying different places, and they're not even close.
October 1st, 2010 at 8:30 PM ^
Is genius
October 1st, 2010 at 3:02 PM ^
Maybe he's a huge collector of 50 cent pieces and 2 dollar bills in a addition to wanting to come here.
October 1st, 2010 at 3:04 PM ^
How funny would that be if Blimpy's seals the deal? But of course after he is here Barwis gets him on a winner's diet and turns him into a beast.
October 1st, 2010 at 3:14 PM ^
This is one of the coolest things I've ever heard of! It would be absolutely awesome if this somehow works out. I need to go to Blimpy's more often.
October 1st, 2010 at 3:30 PM ^
Rich Rod should change his quote to we have blimpy's instead of our helmet has wings
October 1st, 2010 at 3:37 PM ^
How about no.
October 1st, 2010 at 7:55 PM ^
how about yes
nothing is as close to godly nectar as a blimpy deca with a fried egg and cheddar cheese
October 1st, 2010 at 3:41 PM ^
Crazy Jim's -- the purveyors of succulent excellence known as Blimpy Burgers -- is as much a part of Michigan and the Michigan Football experience as this blog.
Overrated? It's a frigging hamburger! In a world of mass produced homogeneity, Crazy Jim's is an homage to the unique. Think of a mashup of Seinfeld's Soup Nazi with '50s small town diner.
October 1st, 2010 at 3:45 PM ^
The best burger in town is by far the Zingerman's Roadhouse burger. Of course on the flip side the Roadhouse itself is overpriced. When Grizzly Peak has its special beer and burger week during the summer they have some great burgers, but sadly they only stick around for a week.
The most overrated burger in town is at Old Town. All the locals sing the praises of Knight's Meet Market beef and how it's amazing, but every time I've gone there I got an overcooked and somewhat thin burger.
I never got Blimpy. I like my burgers thick and juicy, not a half dozen little thin patties stacked together.
October 1st, 2010 at 4:50 PM ^
I thought The Arena had a pretty good thick burger as well.
