This one really caught me off guard.

I agree PopeLando. This was done well. Wishing him the best as well.
September 9th, 2016 at 5:33 PM ^
Sounds like Harbaugh let him go.
September 28th, 2016 at 10:52 PM ^
And anyone telling a kid the right way to decommit behind a computer screen is silly.
Commit/Decommit how you want, if people don't agree with it or don't like it, whatever...it's your life and it's not that big of a deal.
Some of you all take the shit too personally. It has literally NOTHING to do with you, I'm sorry.

Yeah, I'd be willing to bet a good sum that this is what happened.
September 9th, 2016 at 2:15 PM ^
Almost certainly
This kid was the lockiest of locks otherwise
September 9th, 2016 at 2:16 PM ^
I mean, he basically says "After a conversation with Coach Harbaugh, I decided it was best to go elsewhere." It is what it is.
September 9th, 2016 at 3:42 PM ^
I don't know of anything that would have lessened Harbaugh's opinion of Dunaway since he committed. Is it possible that Dunaway looked at the talent in front of him and concluded he should go somewhere else if he wants to see the field? Seeing Gentry sit during a blowout while 2 true freshmen saw snaps might have given him second thoughts about the right team for him.
September 9th, 2016 at 4:21 PM ^
This might be a Swenson situation. The offer is/was contingent on the player holding up on their side in terms of on and off the field performance.
Maybe Dunaway is not at the point that the coaches thought he could get to athletically.
September 9th, 2016 at 4:30 PM ^
Or it might not be. I don't think you should disparage a kid without supporting evidence.
September 9th, 2016 at 5:42 PM ^
Him saying he reached a decision to pursue an athletic career somewhere else after speaking directly to the coach was my supporting evidence.

September 9th, 2016 at 7:40 PM ^
Dunaway seems like a well-mannered young man. It wouldn't surprise me if the conversation with Harbaugh was Dunaway calling him to tell the coach about his decision to look elsewhere.

No. St. Juste doesn't have a lot of offers but I think he's going to be pretty good. A lot of talented players don't get a lot of offers for various reasons. In particular, players who commit early, as Dunaway did, frequently don't have extensive offer lists.
As for MAC level players contributing at UM, I recall Brian describing Mark Huyge as "a player we stole from the MAC". If our fifth string TE contributes as much as Huyge did, I'll be happy.
September 28th, 2016 at 10:50 PM ^
Why would anyone bother offering? He may be a solid player, but it seems like a waste of time when you can go get another Carter Dunaway elsewhere who'd be much more likely to commit to your program.
It's not like he was some unqiue elite prospect who you go after no matter what.
September 9th, 2016 at 4:57 PM ^
That is likely what happened, but is it not possible that he looked at the depth chart at TE and talked to Harbaugh about that frankly and he came to his own conclusion.
September 9th, 2016 at 4:26 PM ^
and kudos to the kid for being such a gentleman about it. wish him well.

The tone of the post leads me to believe he was told to look around as stated above in another comment.
His brother is on the team as a PWO, he was the first 2017 commit.
Offers from Indiana, Nebraska & Purdue.

Ghost Rider, the pattern is full" talk from UM/Harbaugh, i.e. we foresee our TE situation is pretty stacked so not sure there's a fit for you. Sounds like a good kid. Best of luck to him and good for Harbaugh to give him lots of advance warning.
September 9th, 2016 at 4:30 PM ^
So basically, you think he was told not to "buzz the tower," this pissed him off, and he decommited???
September 9th, 2016 at 2:16 PM ^
Dunaway is showing class on the way out.

September 9th, 2016 at 2:40 PM ^
If said recruit is outside the top 750 or so national recruits, the "offer" is tenuous at best and you can commence decommit watch. This recruit is keeping the spot warm in case something better comes along.
If said recruit is top 250 and out of state, especially out of region, the "commitment" is tenous at best and decommit watch is in effect. This recruit has possibly just said yes until his dream date comes knocking, at which time a real decommit may be coming.
Crootin!

It would behoove you to read what the kid actually wrote - he seemed grateful and thanked the players and staff for, as he said, "support and encouragement". As people have already said, it seems evident that he may have been told to look elsewhere. He showed some class in his statement, not that you read it.

I thought this was a joke, damn.
September 9th, 2016 at 2:15 PM ^
With you on that one! I saw this and laughed thinking someone is being a goof with all these latest decommitments.. there is no way Carter would back out.

2018 is going to be a small class and I tend to think the coaches realized they need to reevaluate and start over.
September 9th, 2016 at 2:17 PM ^
Dunaway is a 2017 kid. Has been committed for about a year and a half, his brother is on the team, and he's a legacy.
September 9th, 2016 at 2:22 PM ^
This was likely to avoid another Swenson situation given he said he spoke to Coach Harbaugh and then decided to look elsewhere.
