some good replies already, but for me it's more about the bigger story. Alledgedly this goes to several high profile athletes across several pro sports leagues. the companies are specializing in performance enhancing drugs designed solely to beat detection. as a sports fan, I think this is huge. seeing Manning as the poster boy of this story is just icing on the cake because I don't like him.

With how long it takes Peyton to get into street clothes after a game makes it even more not believable that he took/takes HGH.  The dude's body is pretty much done.

HGH doesn't turn you into a bionic man.  He's played 21 years of high level football.  Some would say the fact that he's still playing, especially given his neck injury situation, is far more of a sign of using HGH than his body's current state is a sign of him not having used HGH.

I should probably say somewhere that I don't really care one way or the other.

I the only one who seriously doesn't care?  I want to care, I know I probably should care, but I also assume PEDs are everywhere in every sport and the users are always five steps ahead of the testers.  So, I just really don't care.  (And for the record because of the inevitable "well why did you take the time to comment on it," it is not that I "don't care" about the issue, I find it interesting, I just don't really care if he used them or not).

...but I wouldn't care very much if the following was the case: Manning used HGH only when he thought his career was in jeopary & Manning came clean and said he did use HGH - at that time only - because he was desperate to save his career.  Then I would think his legacy was somewhat tarnished but that he was still a Hall of Famer becuase he'd done so well pre-HGH.

But I care more if he used HGH given his denial, because that would make him flatly dishonest.  He may not have used HGH, of course, but the denial makes me care about finding out whether he did.

but HGH can make huge differences.  huge.  it is a very dangerous mistress, but it will work on virtually anyone who wants to get bigger, stronger, and/or faster.

And that's why Sylvester Stallone could kick my ass despite the fact he's nearly twice my age. I just refuse to use the sarcasm tag. But to be honest, I'd use it (or anything else) if it was going to extend my life or make me a few million $. Although I'm now old enough to know better than to trade time for money.

As far as I know there's no smoking gun like the Victor Conte having record of injecting a-Rod. It's 100% completely legal to take. Nothing will happen unless they can show he took it. Even if he bought it, there's no proof he used it.

... I'm not sure how much I care.  It just annoys me that deflategate is what it is, and this is actively being buried.

Why do I think he's dirty?  You don't recover as well as he did in the timeframe he did to put up the record braking numbers he did without it.  Same as bonds being lights out later in his career.  Just doesn't happen.  Second, the "it was addressed to my wife" excuse is gotta be the lamest defense ever.  Like "cars leased under my aunts name" in college football.

I think you are confusing anabolic steroids with HGH.

HGH eventually makes your bones more dense, if that can even be considered a "negative" in old age.

There are a few other side effects, but they are relatively normal: high cholesterol, numbness, tingling, swelling of joints, pain in joints...

HGH will grow bone and muscle, thus the mandular changes which are the most notable.  juice will grow muscles.   both will do all the other stuff you list which is of course very bad.  when i lived out west the fairly prevalent rumor was that arnold had so ruined his kidneys with juice and HGH that he had a dialysis machine in his house.  i would not be surprised.

I would actually love to learn that ALL NFL players are on PEDs. I'm pretty sure of it as is, because just look at those monsters. But it could be a good thing for the sport of football, long term. Perhaps all the PEDs are responsible for the CTE, the brain damage, the destruction of bodies. Maybe football goes back to 250 pound linemen and 200 pound linebackers and 150 pound skill position players, and the game is safer for it. Maybe then it won't go the way of boxing. As it stands, I'm not sure my kids will even watch the game their daddy played and loved.

How else does everyone figure these athletes come back from injury so fast? Adrian Peterson tore his ACL the last game of the season and was back better than ever by season's start. HGH use is very prevalent

MI Expat NY

We've had guys in recent years come back quickly from ACL injuries.  What does that say about them?

I am not oppsoed ot an athlete using HGH to recover from injuries if it it is done safely under the treatment of a doctor.  But I don't think that's the reason players are recovering more quickly from ACL injuries.  I think the surgery has simply gotten better and rehab has gotten smarter.

And add to the fact that there's no reliable HGH test, and it becomes even more prevalent. The expense is the only thing keeping it from being used by 100% of the league.

The only way to catch someone for HGH is to do a blood test within hours of them using it. That means you have to do random tests at people's homes at odd hours of the evening/morning to ever catch anyone, which the NFL does not do.

Manning sucks.  I can't wait for Brady to beat him again in the AFC Championship Game.  Brady gets his 5th super bowl win this year and everyone will acknowledge him as the greatest QB in the history of the game.  The guy has a 77% record as a starter in the regular season and a 72% record in the playoffs.

The only blemish on his career is a blatantly obvious hit job perpetrated by the NFL.   I will never understand why the NFL so adamently attempted to assasinate the character of one of it's legends.

Manning should do the same thing Brady did......Tell Goodell and the NFL to go f%*k themselves.   Let's not be pissed at Manning because of what the NFL does or doesn't do.  The real crime here is Goodell getting paid for what he does.  So many od Brady's haters were quick to judge him based on bad and or false reports.  Let's not do the same to Manning.

If that package would've been delivered to (see avitar)!!  Social media and ESPN would blow up. Cable news would be going 24 - 7!  Mortenson and King wouldn't need Viagra!!  Giselle and Brady received more negative coverage when she went to Paris and got a little work done (it definitely pays to be TB12)!

Nance gave himself a happy ending when Manning went into the game yesterday!  Media will cover for Manning with as much gusto as they went after Brady.

In Mannings a case (injured) I could care less. I highly doubt he'd be a regular user.
His problem now , however , is that he has vehemently denied it. If he gets caught in a lie...well, we all know how well that works when you are a public figure.

I found it suspicious that he went from tearing up his ACL and MCL to tearing up the NFL in less than 12 months.  Not only did he defy the odds in respect to recovery time and effectiveness after the surgery, but he also did this in his seventh NFL season.  That's always going to be a suspicious situation to me.

Brady was injured three months earlier in the year (September for Brady/December for AP).  So he had more time to recover.  He also plays a completely different position than AP.  Brady doesn't need to truck defenders, cut on a dime and out race LBs to the edge.  So he didn't have to be nearly as mobile as AP.  AP did all of that and he also played with a sports hernia the last month of the season.  Dude is good, but that just seems too good.

is less with Manning using HGH to recover from his injury (c'mon, does anyone really believe his WIFE needed HGH?  Really?) and more with the media and NFL trying to back-burner this story when they tried to crucify Brady for something that is about 10 billion times less of a story.

The cardiovascular, renal and liver failures and cancer always seems to always get short schrift, since we men tend to zero in on the shriveling of balls and impotency symptoms.

I guess there's this fork in the road for all highly-paid athletes.

"Sacrifice the body", takes on a whole new meaning in this context.

Manning has 17 years in the NFL.

getting crucified after seeing a bottle of andro in McGuire's locker. Steve Wilstein (sp) was buried by the mainstream media because he was shitting on the feel-good home run race between Markie and Sammy. He was banned from locker rooms and discredited, but he was the first person to report on steroids and create a concrete link to a star athlete. In retrospect, how many lives were saved by this guy breaking the story and having the guts to stand behind it?

If the story is wrong, Nantz and others should explain why it is bullshit instead of fearing they will breathe life into it. The most powerful NFL play-by-play guy SHOULD have the power to kill the story, rather than breathe life into it.

I suppose I'm one of the few people on the blog who is a huge fan of Peyton Manning, but I honestly can't understand the hate. Because he lost the Heisman to Charles? Because he rivals Brady in greatness? There is just this weird fixation with hating him on this blog.

And YES I did say he rivals Brady in greatness. You cannot deny the stats he's put up. Yes Brady has more Super Bowls and Playoff success, but I always thought those accomplishmenst were more of a team effort. Because obviously Trent Dilfer > Dan Marino or Terry Bradshaw > John Elway... Regardless, it's pointless to argure that here...
