He was hired in 2010, so that's incorrect. He fired Kiffin midseason by meeting him at the airport, pissed off the interim guy (Orgeron) with the way the search for Sark was handled, and now this. Absolutely unacceptable.
October 12th, 2015 at 5:19 PM ^
The poster above was right, he only hired Sark.
October 12th, 2015 at 5:33 PM ^
Okay, I'll accept that, if we consider that Orgeron filling in and Sark's hiring was one coaching move.

Brandon said he had to pay Hoke big bucks to keep him from USC so USC finally has free run at Hoke!!!
Ok on a serious note - Chip Kelly to USC.
October 12th, 2015 at 4:42 PM ^
Chip Kelly to USC would not surprise me one bit.
October 12th, 2015 at 5:21 PM ^
I would hate it, though. His recruiting would likely be better than when he was at Oregon. Yikes
October 12th, 2015 at 5:11 PM ^
Some names being thrown around are Rich Rod, Kyle Whittingham, Gary Patterson and Pat Fitzgerald.
Not sure if any of these coaches leave their current spot. Maybe Whittingham?
October 12th, 2015 at 9:54 PM ^
No way Fitzgerald leaves NW for USC. Not a chance. If he entertains the idea, it's simply to leverage NW for more facilities upgrades.

I thought this would happen after it was found out that he coached the ASU game drunk. Dude's got a problem and needs to get his life in order before he thinks about coaching again.
October 12th, 2015 at 4:44 PM ^
a big surprise. Just know way he could go back and coach. USC turning into a dumpster fire.

It turned a little while's back.

Kyle Whitingham come on down...
October 12th, 2015 at 4:46 PM ^
This makes the most sense.
October 12th, 2015 at 4:49 PM ^
Whitingham is a great coach. But I can't see him leaving to take over that tire fire and work for Pat Haden. Besides, I think he really loves living in Utah.
October 12th, 2015 at 4:55 PM ^
He might like living in Utah, but he despises the Utah administration.

BYU at this point is not a better job than Utah.
October 12th, 2015 at 8:09 PM ^
Whittingham played at BYU, and began his coaching career there. BYU inspires the type of loyalty in certain corners the way Notre Dame does.

The bad news is that he coached the ASU game while he was drunk. The worse news is that he coached the Washington game sober. I'll be here all week.

USC, University of Support and Counseling. Program Steps:
Step 1- Ignore Warning Signs...Step 2- Get addict to finally admit they have a problem...Step 3- Give Addict Leave of Absence to handle addiction.. Step 4- Fire Addict.... I am sure this will help him not want a drink tonight.October 12th, 2015 at 4:56 PM ^
USC's first responsibiltiy is to its student athletes not its coach.

drunk on the sideline during the ASU game. Why wouldn't you keep a coach like that?

If you show up drunk on the job (i.e. to a game and to a practice) then yes
October 12th, 2015 at 4:48 PM ^
USC is only required to provide a reasonable accommodation that will allow him to perform the essential functions of his job. I guess they figured that even with treatment, he still could not perform the duties of head football coach of USC.
October 12th, 2015 at 4:51 PM ^
...allows employers to prohibit alcohol use on the job regardless of whether someone is an alcoholic. But I am not an ADA lawyer or the lawyer of anyone on this board or anything other than a lemur who can type.
October 12th, 2015 at 4:52 PM ^
I don't understand this question. Why wouldn't it be? Substance abusers aren't a protected class.
October 12th, 2015 at 4:59 PM ^
...I believe they are to some extent. I think a recovering alcoholic who hasn't had a drink in 20 years and whose alcoholism has not affected his performance would have an ADA claim if his employer fired him for being an alcoholic (in contrast with drinking on the job).
This post is purely for entertainment purposes, though, and should not be taken as reflecting the law or common sense or the nature of space and time.
October 12th, 2015 at 5:16 PM ^
California is an at-will employment state. So, unless there is something in his contract preventing it, his employer may fire him at any time for any or no reason and would be foolish to give a specific reason for doing so. Now, the contract terms may warrant performance issues being cited, and USC certainly has a case for that. But I would bet they negotiate a buyout and he quietly goes away to put his life back together.
October 12th, 2015 at 5:28 PM ^
...could argue in the right circumstances that he was illegally fired for being an alcoholic even if he wasn't told this directly, but that's just a guess and far afield from this situation. And I agree with you that the parties will likely resolve this as quietly as possible. The flurry of reports in the last day make me think Sark would want no part of a public rehashing of his various missteps.

October 12th, 2015 at 5:03 PM ^
...said a couple of years ago:
The ADA specifically provides that employers may require an employee who is an alcoholic or who engages in the illegal use of drugs to meet the same standards of performance and behavior as other employees.84 This means that poor job performance or unsatisfactory behavior – such as absenteeism, tardiness, insubordination, or on-the-job accidents – related to an employee’s alcoholism or illegal use of drugs need not be tolerated if similar performance or conduct would not be acceptable for other employees.
October 12th, 2015 at 5:48 PM ^
Scuttlebutt is more embarrassing stories/details are going to come out soon and USC is just getting ahead of the story. Regardless, for all parties involved, this seems like the best move. Hopefully he gets the help he needs to get his life back on track.

Wouldn't showing up under the influance be a conduct issue and not a performance issue? They won the game in question - where's the performance issue? Coaching unider the influance on the other hand - clearly misconduct.

Kyle Whittingham would be pretty good. He seems more like a no nonsense type of guy compared to Kiffin and Sarkasian.
October 12th, 2015 at 4:46 PM ^
There are reports a few incidents involving alcohol at functions, during camp and while traveling with the team. This guy obviously has an issue and it's not one to joke about. Hoping he gets his life in order and gets the help he needs.
October 12th, 2015 at 4:46 PM ^
The LA Times was out there with documents and interviews with former Washington players saying that this was a problem when he was there as well, which made the whole situation even more troubling as here he is now having lost a job over this. Hopefully, he can pull it together, get the help he needs and get back into coaching on some level.
October 12th, 2015 at 4:49 PM ^
USC paid 1 million dollars to a search firm before hiring him. I guess they didn't really do their homework . . .
