Tyus Battle Decommits
Get your welp on:
Tyus Battle is taking an official visit to Syracuse this weekend & opening up his recruitment, per sources. Committed to Michigan in May.
— Evan Daniels (@EvanDaniels) June 19, 2015
There had been rumbles the last couple days to the effect that Battle would take a visit to Syracuse, who had been one of his presumed leaders along with Duke before his commitment to Michigan.
It's unclear at this point how open his recruitment is, but in general schools that suffer a decommit do not get the kid back. How Syracuse remains appealing after Jim Boeheim got blasted by the NCAA remains a bit of a mystery.
Michigan was very strong with AL SF Josh Langford before Battle committed on his official visit and will probably look to re-open serious contact with him immediately.
This is likely real.

The kid obviously really likes Coach Beilein and Michigan. If he needs to visit other schools to make his family happy, so be it. But the odds are still in Michigan's favor, IMO. My impression when Battle announced Michigan as his choice was that his family thought the decision was abrupt but not that they thought it was a bad decision.
I kind of had the same thoughts, but the problem is, you have to go after someone else to take his spot (i.e. Langford). If Langford commits, he's not going to. Which isn't a bad thing. But if Langford doesn't commit, they're going to have look elsewhere. I say this all without knowing when Langford is planning to announce, so obviously timing is important too.

Looks like his dad won out. Battle himself seems like he loves Michigan though, so there's still a pretty good chance he comes back. Full court press for Langford.
Maybe we can keep him still. But as Brian says, history is not in our favor.
Hoops recruiting sucks and football is getting almost as ridiculous.

Even with the decommitment of Tyus, both Basketball & Football are top 10 nationally in crootin'. Quit complaining
It's actually two 3 stars, but yes, Michigan currently has a top 10 class in both sports.

I was just trying to point out that the person you responded to wasn't wrong in stating that Michigan has a top 10 class in both sports. I wasn't implying anything beyond that.

Either way wish the kid the best. What will be will be. Who was the last Syracuse player that turned out to be good? Carmelo? Fab and Waiters are pretty terrible, as was Flynn.
Waiters actually plays a lot of minutes in the league, him and Fab Melo are not on the same level at all.
Waiters is also the butt of a lot of jokes about his efficiency.
Ok, but he still has plenty of starts and plays meaningful minutes on a good team.
please show me when this has been true. he's a guy that nobody wants on their team. he makes Nick Young look like John Stockton.
He started in Cleveland and averaged 30 minutes per game on OKC. I'm not a fan of his, he takes too many shots, but isn't some scrub who barely sees the court.
And has so far had a much better career than Trey Burke
MCW and Tristan Thompson?
played at texas
I never got the whole wishing him the best thing. Personally I couldn't care less how well he does somewhere else. This kind of screws Michigan so whatever.
Happy trails. Wonder what made him change his mind?

I'd prefer Langford over anyone, but hopefully they haven't fallen behind for Battle or Bridges too because of this. That's where recruiting so many fewer players and the talent pool being so much smaller in basketball hurts. You shut things down after your position is full, makes this one sting.
I'll also add that people should be blasting Battle here. Good chance he's still interested in Michigan and he's likely a player Michigan is still very interested in having.
I am sure you inadvertently omitted "not"---as in "I'll also add that people should (not) be blasting Battle here".
And while your admonishment should be self-evident, it is always worth repeating.
To clarify, people should not be blasting him.
...Battle seems like a good kid with a good family. I'd be surprised if there was anything underhanded going on here, and I'm pretty cynical about recruiting (especially basketball recruiting).
... for having the guts to make a decision like this. It's not easy to admit you want to change your mind after making a decision in front of the entire country.
Assuredly false, but interesting speculation as to reason for de-commit: Since Harbaugh has arrived at Michigan he is garnering so much attention for the football program that we are being seen as a full fledged football school again. He wants to go to a school where basketball is the focus.
I doubt that's the reason like you said, but if so, that makes no sense.

I trust you are only disparaging Syracuse's academics in the context of athletics. Because otherwise it is an excellent academic college.
Damn... I was really getting used to not having to read posts saying "Belein can't recruit!"
He can't until he can.
He hasn't committed to Syracuse.
Could this be anything other than a bag man with a very big bag?
He seems to come from a very solid family. I think his parents just want him to be sure in what he chooses.
I'm just bitter
"How Syracuse remains appealing after Jim Boeheim got blasted by t remains a bit of a mystery." Ever since reading the Bagman article in SI, I find myself wondering if the real reason behind these abrupt changes in recruiting might be a little dough-re-me. I'm not saying that is what happened because, obviously, I know less the jack-____ about Mr. Battle's circumstances. I wish him the best of luck in picking whatever school is best for him, whether it's Syracuse, Michigan or whoever, and hope he is happy and successful wherever he lands. But, to use a historical analogy, does everyone remember when Leonard Fournette, out of the blue, was going to show up for the BBQ on his own nickel? We all wondered what we were doing right to get a kid to pay his own way from deep in the heart of the SEC to visit Ann Arbor. After a lot of hemming and hawing and not showing-up when he said he would, Mr. Fournette never did visit Michigan, and subsequently signed with LSU. Just sayin' ... that matches perfectly the description in the SI article of how a recruit strong-arms a payment out of one school's booster to not go on a recruiting trip to another school. Call me a low-minded individual, but I can't help wondering even as I hope it's not true. he NCAA
Wasn't that bagman article almost entirely discredited?
"How Syracuse remains appealing after Jim Boeheim got blasted by the NCAA remains a bit of a mystery."
They still go to the postseason right? If so, who cares about the NCAA? Kid could very well be a 1 and done. Syracuse is a great place to do that with a lot of national exposure and a coach with a ton of connections.
