OT - Which state flag do you like / hate the most?
Slow Friday afternoon... might as well start something discussion-worthy
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flags_of_the_U.S._states
Which state flag do you love or hate the most? For me, the favorite is Alaska's: Simple, meaningful and easily stand out. The worst is Maryland's... The pattern, the Confederate-related cross and it just looks bad anywhere (not only on uniforms). Bonus: Most schizophrenic - Oregons's. A yellow beaver on the reverse side?! Really?!
So what's yours?
They're a territory and maybe some day will be a US state, so I'm going with Puerto Rico.
worst-
Very partial to Michigan's as it is my state, but I have always thought Alaska's was pretty bitchin'.
Had to log in to +1 you. Thank you. Good pick.
It was designed by a 13 year old.
There is even a song to go with it.
Eight stars of gold on a field of blue -
Alaska's flag. May it mean to you
The blue of the sea, the evening sky,
The mountain lakes, and the flow'rs nearby;
The gold of the early sourdough's dreams,
The precious gold of the hills and streams;
The brilliant stars in the northern sky,
The "Bear" - the "Dipper" - and, shining high,
The great North Star with its steady light,
Over land and sea a beacon bright.
Alaska's flag - to Alaskans dear,
The simple flag of a last frontier.
A 13 year old designed it? Wow, that is impressive. I love how simple the design is, you instantly know which state is referenced (I guess some might say Minnesota as well).
You lost the war, it is 150 years ago, and your state is dirt poor because you can't get over it.
They still love the Brits apparently...
Lived in both places before coming to Florida. Both the TX and CA full-sized flags look great flapping in the breesze next to Ol' Glory. Ohio is the worst flag, if only for its weird shape — looks like something you'd see at a regatta.
Texas
You're better than this...
Woof.
I see that and immediately think Cholera.
I like the California flag even though Grizzly bears no longer live here and the grass in only green in January.
I don't know about state flags, but IU had these awesome state flag helmets a few years bag with their mega-uniformz package:
While we're on the subject, the chrome candy-stripe helmet was rightfully ripped to shreds, but if it were cream and crimson I think it could have been a great signature look for the traditionless Hoosiers.
Honestly both of them are better than their 80s helmets with the black oval... looked stupid as hell. I like the top one or the plain IU.

This link is dragging ass for me right now, but if it works for some of you then check this out:
The UTNE Reader magazine sponsored a contest to redesign some of the more nondescript state flags like Wisconsin and Georgia - I remember reading the article from an actual hard copy of the magazine some years back. There were a couple of really attractive re-vamps, though iirc Michigan wasn't one of the makeover candidates - possibly because there were already a glut of state flags that where a seal on a royal blue field.

Detroit has a pretty cool city flag:
:
It reflects the three nations (France, Great Britain and the U.S.) that have ruled the city.
out west. as a tiger fan newly transported a few decades ago out in socal, i noticed a signif number of folks wearing tiger hats in a particular area of the city where a lot of bad thing happened. turns out one of the local street gangs whose name started with the letter 'D' had adopted that logo as their own. fortunately i found out before i encountered one of them in my work environment (not pleasant for gangsters) and before i was tempted to say, 'go tigers!' or 'hey, how 'bout that '87 series with the twins'.
Tigers logo is the "Flag of Detroit" for sure.
Is that you're wrong.

Any of the ones still hanging on w/ elements of the confedate battle flag by definition suck.
I always thought Michigan's was kinda lame, just one of those state seals on a bedsheet ones. but looking at it now, many years and a few psychedilic experiences later, the dancing caribou and moose with the eagle and the waving fur trapper stuck like three layers inside are fairly trippy. Way better than Pennsylvania's dancing black horses and turkey buzzard. I mean, Michigan is just tops in the dancing animals on flags category.
Overall, though: New Mexico. These people understand how to do flags.
Just visited New Mexico for a job interview a few weeks ago. Love the zia symbol and the flag/license plate
I worked at Intel, Albuquerque is OK. Intel, not so much.
I lived in Santa Fe for a few years, and the NM flag is by far my favorite...love the Zia. Still have my license plate, too.
The sun symbol of the Zia pueblo represents the Circle of Life with the sacred number four in the rays symbolizing the four directions, the four seasons, the four times of day (sunrise, noon, evening, night) and the four stages of life (childhood, youth, adulthood and old age.
Kansas and Wisconsin are bad just because the typeface used for the state name is too big and looks cheap and tacky. Mississippi for celebration of treason. Ohio for everything.
When you have to actually write the name of your state on the flag for people to identify it, your design is a failure.
the best is Michigan, and the worst is Ohio.
But I am also partial to New Mexico's, California's (both pictured above) and Oklahoma's
I like Oklahoma's design and colors but hate any flag with their state name written across in big letters. In other words. I'm kind of split on Oklahoma.
Best: Arizona.
Runner-up: Indiana.
Worst: All states with Confederate flag theme.
where we wave a white flag.
Obligatory....
I've always liked Arizona's flag, though New Mexico gives them a run.
Worst and there is no other answer:
You shouldn't be celebrating your history. You can't clean that symbol after it stood for the time you betrayed the United States because your country told you you couldn't keep slavery. You certainly can't clean it up barely half a century after it was the primary one used to stand for segregation, especially considering you AGAIN tried to war with the United States over it.
One of the first images that pop into Americans' heads when "racism" is uttered are the stands of Ole Miss filled with white supremicists waving the stars and bars while the governor played to their hate in his standoff with Kennedy over integration. That is what that symbol will always mean now.
This flag means you suck at being a state. You should probably try to have the symbol of your state mean something else. Or keep it because the first thing anyone really thinks about your state is how much you utterly suck as a state.
Well, by every quantifiable measure, Misssissippi does suck as a state. Rated worst by the OECD for quality of life. Rated worst for education by the NWEA. Rated worst for per capita income by the Bureau of Business and Economic Research.
So in that light, I guess their flag should reflect their basic suckiness.
