"Split M" Controversy

Submitted by Gil From Omaha on

If you've seen some of my posts, you know I am an 8th grader. I've cheered for Michigan my whole life, and my room is decked out. I have one question about the Michigan fandom.

Why is the split-M so bad? IMO I think it looks good.

Just wondering, as my Michigan fathead is a split-m, and I don't know what is wrong with the Split-M

I work at a small private college and we give out a sheet like this when we have an event that attracts the media. I think this approach is pretty much the norm at colleges and universities throughout the country--attempts to standardize the logo, the exact colors, the fonts, etc. Our little guide for the press includes pronunciation of the school's name and points out that it should not be possessive (e.g., "Saint Stephen College" rather than "St. Stephen's College").

Do you remember that scene in The Social Network where Sean Parker tells Zuckerberg to change the name from The Facebook to Facebook? Same reason: "it's cleaner."

And people dig minimalism nowadays, though I guess a real minimalist would do away with the serifs as well.

Congratulations on being a Michigan fan. Great choice. It will bring you much pride, and some disappointment, in the years to come. There is no one way to fly the colors. investigate and honor tradition and history, but make your own choices. They will change over time. Go Blue

He's already off to a better than start than I was. My first post on here was about how Michigan would win a 3 peat national title from 2010-2012 and how I'd win 3 Heismans and 4 national championships for the Rich Rodriguez-led Wolverines. Keep in mind, this was right off of a 3-9 season...

You could argue that the Wolverine head is the secondary logo since it has officially made its way to the regular Maize jerseys for the Baseball team.

The solid M is the best. I used to not mind the split, but now I don't like it. The block M is all we need. We don't need to tell people who we are with the split M.

From an esthetics standpoint the block M is just cleaner, simpler, classier.  Plus I HATE the fact that we have to put Michigan on the block M, like we need to let people know it stands for us.... if they really need to be told what our logo stands for....

I live in Missouri, thus the "Lou", and when i wear one of my block M hats i occasionally get the pro Mizzou shout out.  I immediately mark those people as half-ass college football fans and never speak to them again.  Considering some of them may just have trouble distinguishing the colors, i may be a bit too harsh.  Nah, screw those idiots.

For the same reasons mentioned above and to reinforce the point - the block M always symbolized Michigan to me (and many others) the same way an orange and black P is always Princeton, the IU cactus is Indiana, and the English D is the Tigers. No reason to add "Michigan" to the seminal M in sports. The Mixzou anecdote above is a perfect example of why Michigan is able to stick to the basics and should take advantage of it.

I also just generally like the block M better for shirts, jerseys, hats, etc.

If you like it that is all that matters.

There is a lot of pressure to conform for someone your age; you are better off not worrying about what other people think in regard to issues such as this.

Not a huge fan of the Split-M versus the more badass BLOCK M ..

That said, I think a lot of this stems from the post-National Title team.  The stadium was suddenly hanging The Victors in large words all around the stadium and it looked cheesy.

The Split-M harkens back to the mid/late-80's and into the FabFive era early-90's but I have no particular affinity for it.  I know it's en vogue to slam Brandon and for good reason, but the Split-M isn't as impactful as the BLOCK M.

But what do I know ...?

By what fortuitous twist of fate did you end up a Wolverine?

With regard to the split block Ms you posted, there are significant differences between the two marks in terms of typeface—the top uses Gill Sans Bold and the bottom is a variant of Futura Extra Bold—and in the graphic specifics of the block M itself. They're not the same marks, and David Brandon was right in wanting to unify the identity (the old school term from the 1970s and '80s) or what is now known as the "brand" into one distinct and consistent logotype. All corporations from General Motors to Apple to IBM to Nike pursue similar branding policies, and most large educational institutions try to do so as well.

My father grew up in Chicago till he moved to Omaha with my mom in the '90s. He grew up cheering for Michigan because Northwestern and Illinois were terrible. He chose Michigan out of ND, Ohio St, or Michigan, and has always been a fan. I grew up watching football with him, and the Michigan Love Affair began. I also began to like and follow Michigan hockey, baseball, and basketball. He's more of a casual Michigan fan, while I am a die hard fan. I'm proud to cheer for Michigan even with the past 7 years of football, but the basketball and hockey years have been much easier to say "Go Blue!"

I don't *prefer* the split M but I also don't think there's anything wrong with it. It's just an alternate logo. Most pro teams have two or three logos.

The whole "we shouldn't spell out Michigan because it's obvious" thing is kinda silly because there's quite a few other teams using just a block M and in some parts of the country it's not especially obvious it stands for Michigan. I've seen black Michigan hats with just a yellow M on it and I thought to myself: "Wait, this is virtually identical to an old school Mizzou hat?".

And Bama is a silly example because not only do they have a logo with their A which also spells out Alabama Crimson Tide, they also have the elephant logo for further differentiation.

And guess what, I always thought Bama's A looks uncomfortably similar to the Braves' A. Given that there's probably many Braves fans in Bama - many of which are probably Auburn fans too - that's a bit uncomfortable.

I don't mind the "split m" but in all honesty it looks dated to me. Has too much of an 80's/90's look to it, where the solid block M is timeless

Agreed. I'm OK with the split M, but for my money, give me the maize block M on the navy blue field. Classy, and classic.

The only one I've never cared for is the Wolverine. It's too muddled and indistinct-looking. We know what it is, of course, but to anyone else: Is it a badger? A muskrat? A skunk? What is it?

Plus, placed on top of the logo, it breaks up the clean, classic lines of the block M.

My wife is in marketing and communications for UM Health system and has to review Marketing materials. Every week it seems she has to tell some one "no, you cannot make rainbow m" or, "don't use the split m" or please don't make the M "spooky" and "ghost-like"

is on par with always being addressed by my last name in emails (those of you with two "first" names know what I'm talking about). But in the end you just learn to deal. I'm cool with whatever hackett thinks.

Gil, use whatever you like and love it.  Can you imagine someone selling you a fathead then a few years later telling you you're not supposed to use it?  Keep it forever.

People keep saying Dave Brandon got rid of the split M.  But getting rid of it was a University-level move.  Can anyone provide actual evidence about the impetus to remove it from official use?

Wear what you want. Like what you want.

There is a very good reason universities and companies are so sensative as to how their current brand and logo is being used. I bet almost everyone on this board can immediately identify the brands below without seeing a single word. In most cases not even a single letter. Most people around the world would be able to do the same. That's powerful.
