OT - Best Burger In Each State
Came across this list on Yahoo today. No big surprise as Blimpy Burger was the vote for Michigan. As a Chicago resident, I was happy to see Au Cheval make the list for Illinois as that burger is to die for. And lastly, the best burger I ever had made the cut, at Parlour in Minneapolis. So board, did the list do your state justice?
Blimpy Burger isn't even the best burger in it's own square mile.

To be a pedant, it's on the Grand Traverse Bay.
...fingers?
it used to be the bowery/bowers harbor inn
it is now jolly pumpkin/mission table
also, when they were remodeling and installing the brewing equipment, they found out that they measured wrong, had to cut the brand new floor out and drop it 6 inches for the equipment to fit.
Somewhat agree....to me there are two types of burger
1. Trash burger
2. Gormet burger
The Jolly Pumpkin JP Burger very clearly occupies #2 and the Blimpy burger clearly occupies #1. I don't believe they are competing burgers and there isn't really any cross over.
True fact. I love Blimpy, but the quality of the burger is not the primary reason for that. I also haven't been to the new location.
Best burger in AA, as far as I'm concerned, is at Red Hawk.
To the new Blimpy location the Sunday after the Indiana game in the fall, only to find out it's closed on Sundays. What is the better burger?
You'll see some back and forth in this thread (I see there already is) that'll be a nice guide. I like Frita Baditos (yes it counts), Jolly Pumpkin, Red Hawk, Five Guys, Quickie Burger, Burger Fi in order off of the top of my head (I don't have that list in front of me!).
This is a great reference for all things food, including some talk about burgers:

It's basically a tourist's dream, real testimony from real "locals." Much more reliable than going through Yelp! and what not. Don't know if you'd be a tourist or not, just throwing that out there.
Only make it back to AA once or twice a year, so I'm always tying to get the best info on where to eat/drink that aren't my usual favorites. I've been to every place on that list besides Frita Batidos so I will have to check that out!
The above link is still alright. Frita Baditos is pretty great and very different from Blimpy. Both have their virtues, but only one has a chirizo burger. It's worth it even though the taste stays all day.
Batidos.
Burger Fi? Five Guys??
Quickie Burger?
Unless their quality has changed dramatically in the past 3 years, that is. I strongly prefered Wendy's to Quickie.
You can go there (Quickie and Burger Fi, that is) at 1:45am and get a burger, fries, and a beer before closing after a night of drinking. God bless America.
If Blimpy's gets to go on Yahoo!'s (and others in this comment thread) list because their servers are instructed to act rudely, then getting a late night brew with your burger certainly can be weighed as well.
Sounds like I have found a probable fan of Igor's, where one may obtain a burger at 3:45am while still drinking into the sunrise...
That's debatable (Redhawk, Fleetwood and Grizzly Peak have some mighty fine burgers), though I certainly don't disagree that my love for Blimpy and it's superiority over other burgers in the area has waned since it's move. One thing that isn't debatable though is how popular it is. It's been featured in countless best of lists and foodie TV shows, and because this Yahoo list is nothing more than a popularity contest, Blimpy seems like a very safe and wise bet for Michigan.
but it was as much for the place itself as it was for the actual burger. old school, deep fried everything, crazy workers...and the quint on a kaiser with the works.
I've been only once since they changed locations (even though I only live 5 minutes away from it). When I went, the guy in line in front of me was not prepared and asking all these questions at the grill. Me and the man behind me were just looking at each other like "why the hell is the cook letting this guy get away with all of this." The burger is still great as always, but as you alluded to, the atmosphere of the Blimpy Burger I know and grew up with just isn't there anymore.
If Frita Batidos counts, that's my vote for in Ann Arbor. Neither would be my choice for best in the state.
The Black and Blue Burger at the old Good Time Charlies (c. 1996-2000). Burger patty covered in cracked peppercorns, melted blue cheese, bacon, a peppercorn ranch sauce, sprinkle of green onions and lettuce/tomato to boot. The best burger I've ever had anywhere anytime. And now it's gone.
I believe that this was the peppercorn burger, no? If so, you can still get it at Cubs AC, which--if I'm not mistaken--used to be owned by the old owners at Good Time Charley's and still makes a few items from the old Charley's menu.
Red Robin. I voted for me and Jimmy. I win
With grits or without?
Were they instant grits?
No self-respecting Southerner uses "instant grits" !
Go Blue!
And everytime I've ordered grits in Alabama they come out looking like that crap Cracker Barrel serves.
If we're ranking southern states on their grits, Bama definitely comes in last.
S
Damn. Been awhile since my last double post.

Enjoy the Slayer as an apology. Just don't try to eat it by yourself.
It wins for Alabama... Or myself... Burger battle!!!!!
Ok, I ate lunch and he was eating lunch there too... Great burgers and honest john tabs.
a Tallys Burger.
Really? I've never been a Miller's fan.
If Frita Batidos counts, I think that's my favorite quick service type burger. Would have to do serious thinking to figure out my favorite overall burger.
I agree on Millers. I thought it was good and I like the Velveeta idea, but it really just tasted like a double with cheese from Wendy's.
Miller's is so unbelievably overrated -- it may currently be the best burger in Dearborn, but that's only because Howell's burned down.
I didn't get Miller's at first either. Took me two or three visits to get it. The vibe, simplicity of the burger, beer glasses, cans of soda, checkout process, suited Ford and Severstal execs sitting next to blue collar workers. The place is magical. Classic humble Detroit.
The Kansas list is way off. The best burger I've had here was in Hays at the Golden Q. I miss those burgers.
The Red Flannel Saloon in Paradise, MI in the UP has some damn good burgers. Also, having lived in Los Angeles, I would have given the nod for California to Father's Office.
Father's Office is good. In LA I would have to give best burger to The Bowery.
...in Napa is the best buger I've had in CA. In-n-Out is the best I've had in socal.
I don't know if I would make the proclamation that Blimpy's was the best in the entire state, but it is certainly worthy to be listed among, say, the Top 20 to 30 in the state, I would think. The reason I say this is that I have to hand it to places like Bridgewater Bank Tavern, Frank's Eastside, Cutter's and other perhaps lesser discussed places that also have some pretty damn good burgers. Miller's Bar in Dearborn or Red Coat Tavern in Royal Oak might rank up among the ones I've had too. It's a very hard decision indeed.
burgers are outstanding. And for what they charge for some of them they should be.
I don't get all the Miller's love though. A completely average burger IMO.
