Hackett could be around longer than we thought...
FootballScoop.

The plan was not for Hackett to be in this position long-term.
Well, that has changed folks. Per source, Michigan’s board of regents met recently and Hackett told the board that he has not found a person or persons that he would recommend the board consider for the permanent athletic director post. Accordingly, he advised the Regents that he would be the one making the decision on Hoke’s future following the season. The Regents per source, recognizing the potential issue this could present when trying to hire a new head coach, asked Hackett if this meant he was prepared to stay on “at least two years” in order to provide stability when, potentially, attempting to hire a new face of Michigan football. Hackett told the Regents he was prepared to do so.

Thanks for the info, WD, but this isn't really news is it? And this isn't really a bad thing, in my opinion.

I didn't mean that as a knock on the OP, by the way.

Yes this is news. Why are you even taking issue with the newsness of this post? This is one of the newsiest posts on the board, and the information contained therein is news to me.

If you've read anything about Hackett or listened to the opinions of anyone that's worked with him, he is most definitely not a "power hungry CEO" type. If anything, he's quite the opposite.
November 23rd, 2014 at 12:51 PM ^
There are good founders and CEOs just like there are good and bad people in every human group. We are all capable of doing bad and doing good.
Read up on Yvon Chouinard, CEO and Founder of Patagonia, and tell me he's a power hungry CEO. I hope that Hackett makes some good decisions and acts well for however long he is AD at Michigan and I hope he makes the correct overtures towards the fan base and treats us with respect something his predecessor was sorely lacking and ultimately led to his demise.
November 23rd, 2014 at 1:02 PM ^
I would say let's give him a chance, so far he is trying to be better than DB.
November 23rd, 2014 at 1:33 PM ^
Just because he's a CEO doesn't mean he's a villain who will see Michigan athletics as a grand marketing venture. Granted, it increases the chances, but I don't see any reason not to give Hackett the benefit of the doubt.

He did lay off the best man at his wedding. That is usually someone who is a pretty close friend. It certianly has sounded like he thinks about what is best for the organization he is part of instead of just looking out for himself and cronies.

It's sad how history seems to be repeating itself. That's the problem with too much emphasis on Tradition: nothing really changes.

out the piped in music, goes back to Nike, wrests WJR away from those assholes in EL, keeps ticket prices where they are (they won't ever get reduced, except for the students) and continues to leave advertising out of the stadium, then fine by me.
I don't give a flying fuck who is in charge, save for Brandon - just get Harbaugh here, the sooner the better.
November 23rd, 2014 at 12:37 PM ^
Are you willing to forego several million a year to go back to Nike? They don't pay anywhere near what Adidas and UA do.
November 23rd, 2014 at 1:01 PM ^
November 23rd, 2014 at 4:03 PM ^
Yes. It's time to stop sacfificing every standard we have so that we can scrape the last dime off the table.
We are done selling off everything to the highest bidder.
November 23rd, 2014 at 1:47 PM ^
Who cares?! I remember when people got all up in arms when the block M appeared on the sleeves of the road jerseys.
I also remember when the Nike logo left the left part of the chest (Woodson years) and went to below the neck, and people didn't like that.
And some people thought it was awful when the block M appeared on the back above the nameplate.
Nike, Adidas, UnderArmour, Reebok, it. doesn't. freaking. matter.
Grown men complaining about the manufacturer of the jerseys of a college football team...Good grief. This fanbase has more than its share of pansies, entitled and otherwise.
November 23rd, 2014 at 4:06 PM ^
It's more that just logo placement.
Colors that don't match, jerseys that rip during actual competition, dressing us in clown uniformz, those kind of things do matter.
November 23rd, 2014 at 5:55 PM ^
Nearly every piece of Adidas gear I have bought has gone to shit. It either shrinks, rips, or the stitching comes loose. I'm not buying any more and haven't for a few years.
Adidas doesn't even support Michigan very much with merchandising. When I go outlet shopping with The Bride she always stops at the Adidas store. I have never seen any M swag. I see plenty of other schools.
As a contrast, I still have the Nike sweatshirt I wore during Michigan's 1997 campaign. Granted, it's a little frayed around the collar but it hasn't fallen apart and is still comfortable.
November 23rd, 2014 at 6:32 PM ^
I have had Nike shirts shink and tear, their shoes when I got them always fell apart like garbage and didn't fit as well; but all official adidas stuff I've bought is still in perfect or near perfect condition. I have a black pair of one of the older adizero mesh running shoes I've had for years that have gone into multiple oceans, all kinds of terrain, been painted in, acid washed a pool in 'em and they still fit great and are in good condition.
Anecdotal evidence doesn't really mean anything.
November 23rd, 2014 at 7:51 PM ^
name one manufactorer that has not jumped on the alt uniform train. They're all doing it, and Under Armor and Nike are worse about it than Addidas. Our fanbase is extremely myopic and doesn't seem to actually follow college football outside of Michigan.
November 23rd, 2014 at 12:30 PM ^
But this article has all the earmarks of somebody pulling stuff out of his butt and attributing it to "per source." It's highly unlikely that Hackett has already decided there's nobody out there he could recommend, since the search has hardly gotten started in earnest.
That doesn't mean that Hackett won't be making the decision on Hoke, but asserting that Hackett's already pulled a Dick Cheney needs concrete evidence, not "per source."
Scott Rousel was also the same genius who wrote this on Nov. 2:
"At Michigan, sources tell us the University’s internal goal is to have hired a new athletic director “by the Ohio State game” (November 29th)."
Anybody with a lick of sense should have immediately concluded Rousel has no idea what he's talking about for two reasons: such an aggressive timeline was completely at odds with Schlissel's statements, and it's delusional to expect a sitting AD at an established Michigan-level school to resign before the football season is concluded.
November 23rd, 2014 at 1:35 PM ^
if this is WTKA Don, Don rules. Still thinking about the sterno comments from the round table. The Canned Heat reference brought me back to Jaoquin Phoenix in Paul Thomas Anderson's The Master.

Clearly you do not know Scott Roussel.
November 23rd, 2014 at 12:18 PM ^
Does anybody actually see this ending well? Ever since the fans ran Lloyd out of town this program has been a dumpster-fire. At least we have bball.
November 23rd, 2014 at 12:19 PM ^
It's not like Lloyd crapped all over his successor or anything.
His successor who, yesterday, beat the living shit out of a team we lost to.
November 23rd, 2014 at 12:26 PM ^
Let's not forget, RR and his minions were like bulls in a china shop when they first got to Schembechler Hall - hell, they dogged and made fun of the previous staff and what they accomplished (or failed to accomplish).
Don't think for a second that this stuff didn't get back to Lloyd. I'd do the same thing if something like that happened to me. Actually, I wouldn't. I'd tell the guy to go fuck himself and turn my back.
November 23rd, 2014 at 12:46 PM ^
In what way? Source? It's perfectly understandable for a new coach to build his own staff. It wasn't RR's fault Lloyd got butt hurt about it and turned his boys against the new regime. Read Three And Out and see if you can come to any other conclusion.
November 23rd, 2014 at 12:49 PM ^
November 23rd, 2014 at 12:55 PM ^
Blanket dismissals of the book are just as fun.
If "3 and Out" is even 5% true as it concerns Lloyd Carr, he didn't behave very well during that transition.
November 23rd, 2014 at 1:55 PM ^
Yep. Apparently everything written by Jon Bacon around these parts is automatically asumed to be true, and should not be questioned. HHe has knowledge of everything, and couldn't possibly be making anything up to fit a narrative.
November 23rd, 2014 at 1:10 PM ^
with a grain of salt. It was hardly an objective book.
November 23rd, 2014 at 1:02 PM ^
IMO Lloyd Carr was a heck of coach at UM and yes I was one of those people who was calling for his ouster at the time. I was a sophomore to be fair and had not yet discovered MgoBlog so I didn't know all the nuances in 2007. Not only did Lloyd win a lot he also did so ethically.
However, it seems unquestionable that he is part of the reason we are in our current position because he didn't give the necessary support to RichRod. In fact, there are multiple reports that he sabotaged him in terms of encouraging talented players to transer; it is very hard for me to forgive him for that but it appears he won't be influencing any further decisions.
I pray that if we get a highly successful outsider assuming one wants to come that the internal power brokers throw their support behind them. If we're not on a clear path to success within the next five years well it could be a long time indeed until Michigan becomes nationally relevant again since the fans will finally turn. We've stood by the team for the most part and have been toughened up; I for one am ready to get back into a position where I can become complacent again although won't because of these recent performances.
November 23rd, 2014 at 7:06 PM ^
If only Lloyd HAD turned his back instead of actively working against the team he was supposed to be loyal to.
November 23rd, 2014 at 12:32 PM ^
November 23rd, 2014 at 12:44 PM ^
He has kicked major ass everywhere else he has coached, except here. Maybe it was actually someone else's fault he didn't succeed here.
November 23rd, 2014 at 1:03 PM ^
Two five loss seasons before this one and he has gotten to this point with two miracle wins and a narrow victory over an Akron-type team.
Zona is 9-2 and RR deserves plaudits for that, but let's not go overstate things.
November 23rd, 2014 at 1:17 PM ^
Quit biasing. Look at Arizona since 2000:

2001 | 5 | 6 | 0 | John Mackovic (5-6) | ||||

Okay, two 5-loss seasons, sure. But it followed 4-8, and do I need to go look up the recruiting rankings for you to get the point?
November 23rd, 2014 at 6:40 PM ^
you can see a team that has consistently improved since he got there and is 2-0 in bowl games. Michigan has barely even made bowl games the last 2 years, not even considering winning; and of course it would be more than a miracle to make one this year.
November 23rd, 2014 at 1:23 PM ^
November 23rd, 2014 at 7:09 PM ^
Win or lose, his offenses rack up impressive numbers on everyone. One miracle win with a 36 pt. fourth quarter -- must be magic -- and you forgot to mention the narrow LOSSES which if they had gone the other way might have made his record even more impressive.
November 23rd, 2014 at 1:07 PM ^
Tony Gibson in particular, led a midweek mutiny against Scott Shafer and ran the vaunted 3-3-5 prior to the Purdue game. It wasn't his fault neglecting the other two equally important phases of the game and in the words of Mike Martin, treating the defense like a "sparring partner". 15-22, 6-18 and 0-6 weren't his fault.
It was someone else - sorry, but that's complete and utter BULLSHIT.
