Confessions of a Michigan Football Fan

Submitted by Libertine on

11 Warriors has an interesting piece on their site where they "invite you (their readers) to spill your sins, real or perceived, against Ohio State athletics." It makes for a fun/entertaining read and I thought we Michigan fans probably have plenty of interesting thoughts to spill as well.

So I guess I'll start with my 3 confessions:

-I love Ann Arbor to death, but I don't think it's the best college town in the Big Ten. I think that privilege goes to Madison.

-I'm a Hoke fan, and I love Mattison and think Nussmeier was a great pick up, but State has the best all-around football staff/coaches in the Big Ten. Hands down.

-Here's my big one... Had we played Nebraska in a BCS Championship-like game back in '97, I think they would've won.

Bonus: I LOVE the movie "Rudy" and have no real negative feelings toward Notre Dame at all.

  • Do not like the music played during the game. We need better songs. Something we can play all the time like Va Tech does with Metallica. Music that will actually pump up the players and the crowd (NOT SING ALONG TYPE OF MUSIC)
  • I think our tradition is great, but we need to do some modern alternate things too. The kids these days eat that stuff up, and it really bugs me that some of these old timers throw a hissy fit when we try something new. It just for a game or two, not the end all be all.
  • OUR CROWD IS REALLY DISAPPOINTING 80% OF THE TIME.
  •  ohio state is our biggest rival, but I hate both msu and notre dame more. Sorry if that doesn't make sense.
  • Really really wish our team played with more swag. Yes, I said swag. Hate the word, but we need it badly. I think we play like school girls sometimes.

I'd rather talk sports with a fair-minded, rational, intelligent fan of a rival team than a rabid Michigan fan if he doesn't know what he's talking about.

I think too many of our fans take uniforms way too seriously. That said, I generally like the arrogant snarkholishness of our alumni base. It keeps things fun and interesting even through the tough times. I don't get why some fans are so critical of our love for and references to tradition and history. Those things are part of what makes us great. Yes, please win right now, thank you. But also please feel free to remind me of our all-time records against Ohio and tOSU and OSUcks any time the fancy strikes you. I like referring to our rivals in childish ways. Childish, yes, but so is the reverence and seriousness we fans employ in worshipping what is in fact just a game. Let your inner kid out, people. That's kind of what we are here to do. Check that. Michigan Football is more than just a game. Anyone who disagrees is a treasonous sheepfondler whom should be hung by a rope braided of their own individually-plucked nose hairs. Also, BiSB is my favorite.

We were a regional power with a national brand, now we're neither. I cringe when we throw the ball. "this is Michigan" pisses me off because no.....no it's not, lets earn it first. I hate comments and stories on mgoblog that allign with the media (who have become clickwhores using hyperbole to tug at heart strings). We were never a NC contender on a regular basis so don't expect it.

I played football for 8 years, and not only am I much more knowledgeable in the in's and out's of football, but it is also by far my favorite sport to watch in general (i.e - I'd choose to watch a random football game over a random basketball game any day).  But ever since I was little, Michigan basketball has always demanded my attention more than the football team has(which is saying a lot).

But I don't think Hoke is capable of coaching at this level, and I am hoping that the Nussmeier hire is in preparation for Brandon firing him after another season or two of 7 wins and replacing him with Nuss......the guy is a great coordinator, has seen how the best in Saban coaches, and is young. I think he could potentially be our new Bo

IMO, Hoke would have to lose 7 this season to get fired. As long as he wins 6 or more games he will have 2015. Now, in 2015, there must be significant improvement in the team. I would say 9 wins is a must with very competitive games against  our rivals. Now, I'm down to a 50/50 chance of Hoke being our coach after the 2015 season.

I think Devin Gardner is given way too many passes on this website for his performance. I don't believe he'll ever be more than a guy who stares down his favorite target and ignores getting rid of the ball in a timely matter. I'd rather put a guy in there who just does his job in the simplest manner and rely on the running game and the defense like 2011.

I don't disagree. I like Gardner and believe he is a very good athlete but I am not impressed with his arm and never have been. However, being a good QB is more than just arm strength and he hasn't really been able to play a full season behind a decent line. I also think it's possible that if Bellomy hadn't crashed and burned in the Nebraska game Gardner may still be at WR.

I get a little nauseated with the obsession over "uniformz," and whether the players should wear this or that color, white or blue pants, or what decorative designs should grace their football ensembles. Such discussion is far more appropriate for a Vogue, Elle, or other fashion blog.

I firmly believe RR left Brady and company with an empty cupboard. By next season, however, that fact or excuse will become irrelevant.

I expect M might never win another NC. And I almost hope that's the case, given the compromises in recruiting, admissions, grading practices, and the scholarship trickery that appear necessary for an Alabama, Auburn, LSU, Florida State, or other similar program to maintain such a high competitive level.

As long as Dark Lord Dantonio and his Dark Lieutenant Narduzzi remain at Staee, that program will remain a thorn in M's side.

I still cherish the memories of the '97 season:

  • Charles won the Heisman to the everlasting chagrin of Tennessee fans everywhere, who are still seething about it.
  • Of all the games I've attended at M Stadium, the '97 M- Ohio game was the best I have ever seen there. And yes, I was at the '69 game as well.
  • An M-Nebraska game that year would have been close, but I'm not sure Nebraska ever faced a defense as good as M's was. And just as he did in the Ohio game, Charles could well have provided the winning edge.

Hoke went 11-2 with Denard and mostly Carr Leftovers, Molk, Schofield, VanBergen, RR's legacy at Michigan was the 2009 and 2010 classes. The attrition from those 2 years is absolutely horrible and Michigan paid for it last year by putting raw offensive line talent on the field.

I think you're wrong about the '97 Nebraska team. Besides the Missouri game fiasco, which others have mentioned, the only real measuring stick we have to compare Michigan and Nebraska is the common opponent, Colorado. Nebraska played at Colorado and escaped with a 27-24 victory, almost losing the game in the 4th quarter. Michigan beat Colorado 27-3 in Ann Arbor, and if I recall correctly, Colorado's lone field goal came in the 3rd quarter when Michigan was well ahead and subsituting beyond the 2-deep on defense. Granted, Nebraska had to play them on the road, but at that point in the season Colorado had been exposed and was no longer ranked. There is no way Nebraska could have handled Michigan's defense, and their defense was not very good.

There were two common opponents.  We also beat Baylor 38-3, and Nebraska beat them 49-21.  I'm not saying you can tell a whole lot from a 35 point win vs a 28 point win, but you are the second or third person I've seen say we only faced one common opponent that year.  We faced two, and had the better of both of them.

I dislike OSU and MSU so much I am not willing to give them any props, ever.

I want UM to beat every team they play by 20+ points.

I am positive that this team will begin to right the ship very soon.

I believe Sparty swims in steriods under Dantonio.

I think if we all knew what transpired with Gibbons/Lewan/staff we'd all be deeply ashamed.

I think a majority of football players at Michigan are not particularly smart and they're jerks (although I think ours are far better than the college football norm).

I'm pretty sure the 97 M team beats nebraska.  I always knew Brady was much better than Henson and was always disgusted with Henson coming in every 2nd quarter.  I genuinely believe M has the greatest all-around college football tradition -even now.

I was born in 1969 and grew up rooting for Sparty except when they played UM. I stopped rooting for them in the 90s with the tackle of Desmond and clock-gate, etc., but still hated OSU, ND and USC more (much more).

That changed in 2011 and now I appropriately hate all things green.

I used to not hate Notre Dame until I worked with a fan of them.

I hate all the talk about this is Michigan and being tough, just win football games!!!

I really want Jim Harbaugh to be the coach.

I have zero hope that Hoke will accomplish B1G championship, let alone a national title, as long as Meyer and Dantonio are in the B1G.  He simply isn't the coach that they are as much as I hate them.  I don't even see us beating State in the next four years.

I fear Dantonio and MSU football.

I don't think Nuss is the answer and that Hoke should be fired if he fails to get ten wins. We shouldn't lose at home and need to beat at least one of our rivals on the road for me to trust him.

I think Devin Gardner would be an All-American with [insert team with solid O-line]

While I believe Beilein is fantastic and is one of the top 3 coaches in the B1G, I don't believe we will be a national title team until he starts bringing in four and five star recruits consistently.

I am more of a college basketball fan than college football.

I am a UNC fan behind Michigan, and with all of the academic nonsense, I believe that every top notch university has sham classes, pays recruits, etc. including our beloved Michigan.

Michigan's out of state tuition is ridiculous and is ruining the dreams of middle class prospective students who have worked their asses off in school with the hopes of one day attending there.

Than the whole walmart wolverine thing, as a non alum. I have punched my best friend and nd fan in the face at age 10 after the Ismail game. I have cried and bled for UM and when it came time to go to school, I went to a better program than UM had in my field.

I guess that's too long for a t shirt though.

I get excited when we land a big recruit, but I wish recruiting coverage would cease to exist. I died a little on the inside when OSU hired Meyer. I think he is an incredible coach. I think OSU is really fun to watch. As long as the SEC oversigns, I don't think any B1G teams are in the same category as their top teams. I cheer for MSU when they don't play us, and I love their fight song.
