Herbert when asked if he will return: This is about Sherrone.
January 27th, 2024 at 11:37 AM ^
Alejandro asked Moore about it, Moore thinks he's staying.
January 27th, 2024 at 6:45 PM ^
We have about $7.5M extra on Harbaugh savings. Herbert @ $7M a year is fine. ;)
January 27th, 2024 at 11:43 AM ^
He's negotiating. It's fine. Probably.
January 27th, 2024 at 12:08 PM ^
May this be the first step in U of M showing up with some $$$$ and getting a man that is clearly who Moore and the players want.
Bash the SEC all you want but they don’t have to twist regents, donors or admins arms. They ask for something and they simply get it. They actually want to give their coach all that he needs to succeed. A novel concept I know.
January 27th, 2024 at 1:12 PM ^
I know a lot of people who frequent this board want Michigan to throw money around and utilize the proverbial money cannon, and that's fine.
I just think that posters who advocate this also should indicate how much money they have donated to the Athletic Department to support their view.
It's always easier spending other people's money.
Too many in government throw money at problems in an often failed attempt to fix them.
I'd prefer that Michigan judiciously use it's resources where needed and indicated following a thoughtful review.
Having said that, I hope Herbert is retained. His value has been demonstrated. Just not at ANY price.
January 27th, 2024 at 1:22 PM ^
if only the private sector didn't waste money
January 27th, 2024 at 3:23 PM ^
Thank you for providing a sterling example of “playing not to win” mentality
January 27th, 2024 at 3:33 PM ^
You must be loads of fun at parties.
January 27th, 2024 at 3:40 PM ^
Ah yeah….any price. Herbert was dam near as important as JH in winning that title. Maybe even more so. What Abigail and Herbert did gave Jim the pieces to mold. Those two are the reason our lines looked like grown men and not blobs of shit like every other team we faced. He wants his salary doubled, you do it. That’s how important he is, and yes, Michigan can afford it!
January 27th, 2024 at 5:48 PM ^
The reason the newest and fanciest buildings on every college campus are football related is because football makes so much money they have to invent ways to spend it like locker room waterfalls and other nonsense. We are one of the richest universities and athletic departments with the best tv deal. We can afford to throw money around. This is why I think its idiotic for ADs to focus all on making more money. Why? We have plenty. Focus on the quality of the product and the fan experience and who cares if we lose money in the short term, it will return far more money in the long term.
January 27th, 2024 at 1:48 PM ^
Showing up with some money? Herbert is already the highest paid team SC coach in football period. If Herbert were to leave it's not because he's underpaid for his position.
January 27th, 2024 at 12:14 PM ^
PAY DAT MAN HIS MONEY.
January 27th, 2024 at 12:50 PM ^
I fucking love Oreos.
January 27th, 2024 at 6:41 PM ^
If we lose Herbert, it's fist-in-wall time.
January 27th, 2024 at 11:43 AM ^
"Herbert politely declined to answer and then walked out"
I'm thinking he had higher priorities..... leg day.
January 27th, 2024 at 12:09 PM ^
EVERY DAY IS LEG DAY AND EVERY LEG DAY IS PRIORITY NUMBER ONE
January 27th, 2024 at 1:45 PM ^
Leg day is the best day

Im missing my right acl so I respectfully disagree. Every day is CALF DAY!

If you are a skeleton, do you have a gut?

If not, you're welcome to some of mine.

Eh, I don’t think Don is wrong. Perhaps the vintage crankiness is applied a little too strong here

Punch yourself in the gut. It sucks.

*BPONE has entered the chat...
January 27th, 2024 at 3:37 PM ^
This board has gotten so hypersensitive about even the suggestion that coaches or players might go elsewhere its just ridiculous. It was a non-answer so of course it makes sense to speculate one way or the other.
January 27th, 2024 at 11:44 AM ^
Ben Herbert has a lot of class by saying this about Sherrone. That was not the right time to ask anyone other than Sherrone about their future. Angelique should know better.
January 27th, 2024 at 11:48 AM ^
Uhhhh… no, exactly the opposite. Its literally her effing job—like, what she is hired to do—to ask those questions. Itscon your mind, its been on everyone’s mind, there are dozens of posts on this blog about retaining him. Reporters are supposed to ask the questions, there is never a wrong time or wrong place.
January 27th, 2024 at 11:51 AM ^
I think you’re missing the point.
January 27th, 2024 at 11:55 AM ^
I think there were two points and one of them got responded to. The other one is either being tacitly agreed with or just simply ignored.
January 27th, 2024 at 12:01 PM ^
What point would that be?
I think it's a very fair and appropriate question. I also think that his response was very fair and appropriate
January 27th, 2024 at 12:15 PM ^
GET OUT OF HERE WITH YOUR NUANCE AND FACTS, I WANT TO FEEL.
January 27th, 2024 at 4:33 PM ^
If you are staying and you know it, then the appropriate response is to state it outright so that Sherrone can have “his day”. To decline to comment does the opposite and draws attention away from Moore and onto Herbert.
So the only logical conclusion is that Herbert’s future with the program has not been decided and discussing that fact would have indeed stolen Moore’s day.
January 27th, 2024 at 12:07 PM ^
Not exactly. Reporters’ job is to report actual news, not seek to generate scoops (and thereby exacerbate hand-wringing among their readers). What good does it do us to be poking for answers that are clearly not there yet? Angelique will literally be among the first to know when there is actual news of Herbert’s future, and she can tell us then when it’s actual news and not speculation.
January 27th, 2024 at 12:11 PM ^
Asking questions is part of journalist's job. If you're getting nervous over what Herbert said in response, that's not on Angelique.
If Herbert had said, "Yep, I'm staying," somehow I doubt you'd be upset over the question.
January 27th, 2024 at 1:36 PM ^
If Herbert had said “yep, I’m staying” then it would be news, and would be worth reporting. But he didn’t, so it’s not news.
My comment was poorly phrased - reporters should ask questions, but their job is to report news, not to peddle “no news” as if it were news.
January 27th, 2024 at 2:52 PM ^
She's just tweeting an answer to her question. She's not peddling it as news. I blame SalQ for posting a no news tweet as something significant.
January 27th, 2024 at 12:31 PM ^
So reporters should just sit around wait for people to volunteer information? I guess we can do away with press conferences now.
January 27th, 2024 at 12:44 PM ^
Any real reporter will beg to differ with you on this.
January 27th, 2024 at 1:16 PM ^
Reporting news is generating scoops not relaying official announcements.
January 27th, 2024 at 1:18 PM ^
This is a state employee who showed up to a PRESS CONFERENCE.
January 27th, 2024 at 1:39 PM ^
This is a very authoritarian take on news reporting.
January 27th, 2024 at 2:41 PM ^
The problem, as usual, is social media. Historically, the non-answer would have not been news. Now, she fairly reported a non-answer because there is a platform where you can fire that off in 10 seconds. Non-answers evoke negative feelings because they’ve also been a way to avoid telling the truth. But that isn’t always true. Nobody is wrong here, I just wish nothing was shared until the final decision.
January 27th, 2024 at 11:49 AM ^
Its her job to ask these questions.
And there's a reason she's one of the most (if not the most) respected Michigan football writer around Shembechler Hall. I don't mean the one you like the most here, or the ones people like on Twitter (X).
The football program, and those in its orbit respect her.
January 27th, 2024 at 12:05 PM ^
That was not the right time
If this were a non-football event (like, say, a fundraiser for Mott), I'd agree. But at a press conference to introduce the new head coach? Perfectly fair to ask. (And it's also fair that he chose not to answer.)
January 27th, 2024 at 1:28 PM ^
And (in the replies) that’s exactly what Angelique said - she wasn’t mad he didn’t answer or anything, thought it was a totally fair response. It’s still her job to ask.
January 27th, 2024 at 12:09 PM ^
That’s silly. All Herbert has to do is say “I will be on Coach Moore’s staff, but now isn’t the time to talk about it.”
January 27th, 2024 at 1:29 PM ^
Hard disagree. First, if that's indeed the case, Herbert will be negotiating his deal right now. You don't say you're definitively staying in the middle of a negotiation. Second, saying he will be on the staff creates instant news, and therefore immediately detracts from Coach Moore's introduction. The classy thing to do -- whether or not he's staying -- is not to give an answer that steals the spotlight on someone else's day.
