Jake “Money” Moody: NFL PAT Record
Yesterday, Jake Moody set the NFL record for most consecutive extra points made at 53. It is the most consecutive PATs made since the NFL moved the kick back to the 15 yard line in 2015.
Earlier this season, Moody became the first kicker in NFL history to kick three field goals and kick three extra points in each of his first three games.

...and not one person that follows this blog is shocked by any of it. The dude is a rock.

Yeah. I was really hoping the Lions would get him.
December 18th, 2023 at 3:25 PM ^
Me too and they probably would have with a 5th or 6th rd pick but damn, SF took him in the 3rd.

Most consistent kicker I've ever seen inside of 40 yards.
December 18th, 2023 at 9:59 AM ^
Could've stopped at "ever seen" referring to college. Wanted to be a Lion...damn...
December 18th, 2023 at 10:35 AM ^
More so than Jason Hanson?
December 19th, 2023 at 9:07 AM ^
Jason Hanson was the most consistent inside of 50 yards I've ever seen.

Most amazing was the post game interview: "Yeah, I mean NFL games are important," Moody said, "but I needed to take care of my man, mGrowOld this one time."

Dont think for a second I didnt appreciate it.

I was going to mention this as well. My wife and I live in Cleveland and were on a trip to North Carolina while we were listening to this game on XM Radio. When there were seconds left and the 49ers were lining up for a game winning Money Moody FG, we KNEW the Browns had lost. (Heck, we're used to that.) We COULD NOT BELIEVE IT when the announcers said that he had missed and that the Browns had won.
I am really glad to hear Moody has had a spectacular year and that NFL people are now recognizing his abilities like UM fans have for several seasons. My wife is, in particular, a Moody fan. As she would say to me numerous times over the last few seasons before this one, "Thank God for Jake Moody."
December 18th, 2023 at 2:18 PM ^
I'm a Niner fan in the Bay Area.
TRUST me when I say people here do not trust him, and dread him having another game deciding kick (he missed at Cleveland for 1 of Niners 3 Ls on the season).
Having watched him strike it right down the middle over & over at Michigan, it's true even his makes are frequently perilously close to the uprights for SF.
I try to calm them all, but the truth is the Niners probably won't have another game decided by a FG this year.
So he'll likely have to wait another year to make some big important kicks & win the fan base over. (As a frame of reference for Niner fan expectations - Robbie Gould never missed a single postseason kick, FG or PAT, in his career!)

There was a time...when "Money" Moody... walked the earth. And legends descended and stories were told.
December 18th, 2023 at 10:33 AM ^
Dang it. He knows he should miss a couple inconsequential kicks here and there to avoid suspicion. Now his otherworldly origin might get discovered.
December 18th, 2023 at 10:42 AM ^
Don't need an "otherworldly origin" for the secret of his success....
....he comes from a program that knows how to steal signs

Obligatory:

The only miss from this graphic was the one blocked at Indiana....
December 18th, 2023 at 10:55 AM ^
You can't have one without the other obligatory Moody.
December 18th, 2023 at 10:03 AM ^
He's had a really nice turn around since early in the season when he missed a few PATs and short-ish FGs. So much so that he came under a little fire in SF. But expectedly, he has turned it around and is once again the accurate kicker we all know.
December 18th, 2023 at 10:22 AM ^
Yeah, it was a weird experience listening to SF fans gripe about Moody earlier in the season after his run of sustained excellence at Michigan.
I'm kinda surprised about the record, but kicking is weird man
December 18th, 2023 at 10:23 AM ^
I think he's 53 - 53 on PATs.
December 18th, 2023 at 10:49 AM ^
Not sure what you're remembering but he's 53/53 on extra points and his 3 field goal misses (out of 21) on the year were from 40, 41, and 54 yards.
December 18th, 2023 at 11:35 AM ^
Two were in one game, in a loss, so that was the focus. Also, reading between the lines, I feel like a lot of the SF beat didn't understand the desire to move on from Robbie Gould, and especially why they would want to use a relatively high pick on any kicker. But they also seemed to belabor the point a bit too much.
December 18th, 2023 at 2:34 PM ^
I'm a Michigan native long transplanted to the Bay.
I agree the Niner fanbase way over stresses the concern over Moody - but let's be honest, what else do we have to stress about?
Aside from uncontrollables like injuries, there's zero concern about any other team being able to compete with the Niners.
So fretting about the Kicker is probably a healthy way to generate some necessary pessimism!
December 18th, 2023 at 3:49 PM ^

I guess we should cancel the rest of the season and just give the Super Bowl trophy to the Niners.
They're good and all, but this is the NFL. The Niners have been stacked for years and the last time they won it all was 1994.
December 18th, 2023 at 8:51 PM ^
And the last time I said that barring injuries no one can touch them was 1994!
Dude - I'm a lifelong Michigan fan. I'm nothing if not circumspect to pessimistic!
So don't cancel the postseason - watch & appreciate what you're seeing. It's like a beautiful ballet of controlled violence.
But if you've been watching them, you tell me who you're picturing beating them?!
December 19th, 2023 at 9:54 AM ^
But if you've been watching them, you tell me who you're picturing beating them?!
Pretty much any team that makes the playoffs.
Don't get me wrong, I like the 49ers odds, but I don't see them as an unbeatable machine. I suspect the 49ers are a lot like those Aaron Rodgers GB teams that wrecked havoc in the regular season only to meet their match in the playoffs.
December 19th, 2023 at 2:25 PM ^
I suspect you're wrong.
Shall we watch & see?
December 18th, 2023 at 1:30 PM ^
No, this is correct -- go to the Niners Nation blog and/or the artists formerly known as Twitter (if you want to) and look at some of the top posts from Niners fans from 1-2 months ago. It was taken as a given that Moody was a shaky part of the team; even when he made kicks (which was typical), they were unimpressed by them not being dead straight etc.
Certainly was a good reminder that most of us message board poster do not know jack squat or, at the very least, have a poor sense of perspective.
December 18th, 2023 at 11:04 AM ^
There was bound to be some adjustment period. Kicking is a highly mental game, and when you get to the NFL, everything is different.
I figured everything would be fine once he settled in, and sure enough.
December 18th, 2023 at 4:02 PM ^
He didn’t miss any PATs this year. And based on the article he hasn’t missed any PATs since the 6th grade.
December 18th, 2023 at 10:08 AM ^
Does he still huff smelling salts right before kicking? MF-ing Legend.
December 18th, 2023 at 10:51 AM ^
Prader used to do the same thing when he was a Lion. If that doesn’t snap you to attention nothing will.
December 18th, 2023 at 10:09 AM ^
This article quote and type of thinking in football always kills me,
"The Niners raised a few eyebrows by using a third-round pick on Moody at this year’s NFL draft, making him the first kicker drafted within the first three rounds since Tampa Bay took Roberto Aguayo in the second in 2016."
The kicker position is most likely going to be your highest scoring player in any given game/season/program history. Get a good one and you win more games, it is that simple.
December 18th, 2023 at 10:16 AM ^
I think the argument is more that getting a "good" kicker doesn't require using a 3rd round draft pick. The marginal decrease from a Moody-type to the next guy isn't as big of a drop going from drafting a WR in the 3rd to signing a free agent.
Picking up an UDFA kicker vs picking up an UDFA WR. One is more likely to be successful.
December 18th, 2023 at 10:31 AM ^
What about a kicker that can make a 50 yarder right after time is called, but shanks an attempt when there is pressure? 🤣
December 18th, 2023 at 10:44 AM ^
ohio has one of those, you know, just in case you're in the market for one. i'm sure they'd let you borrow him. forever.
December 18th, 2023 at 2:44 PM ^
Well, the point actually is that the Niners already had Robbie Gould - he of the zero career postseason misses - and it looked like both an overspend of a draft pick + questionable salary cap management.
Being a Michigan fan 1st, Niners fan 2nd - I disagreed. But being honest the only reason I did was because I'm a Michigan fan 1st.
For the other 99% of Niner Nation it was a very debatable decision. And Moody's early struggles just got amplified in that environment.
December 18th, 2023 at 4:36 PM ^
Gould was 41 and retired after apparently not finding any success on the open market. I am sure 49er fans loved the guy, but at some point an organization makes the move.
Moody has only missed 3 field goals all year, his first miss was from 54 after going 9-9 to start the season.
December 18th, 2023 at 10:17 AM ^
He did have one un-rock like game though. On October 15 he was 1-3 on FGs and they lost to Cleveland by 2 points. I know this because my SF fan friend made sure to mention it to me a few times when it happened.
Other than they he's been, a rock.
December 18th, 2023 at 2:51 PM ^
If you only read the boxscore and don't watch Moody kick in games, you only see that he's made x consecutive kicks, a record.
But if you actually watch all the Niners games, you know many many of his kicks just sneak inside the uprights (particularly right, like his ball isn't drawing the way he expects.)
When combined with the early misses, it has caused a true lack of confidence among Niner Nation. That will only be fixed by him making a few big kicks. But they win by 20+ every week, so who knows when that opportunity will arise?!
December 18th, 2023 at 10:19 AM ^
I think back to the Illinois game in '22 - and, the combination of coaching strategy and execution.
To say the least - Jake was a huge part of that.
Wishing him well every time he takes the field.
Go Blue...

Wow has it really been 8 years since they moved back the PATs? Seems like just a couple years ago.

The article mentioned he hasn't missed a PAT since 6th grade, including a perfect 148/148 at UM.
Amazing. I knew he was good but didn't realize he never missed a PAT at Michigan.
