Gregg Doyel: Not fair to give JJ McCarthy a Heisman vote if UM coaches cheated before calling plays
Apparently Gregg Doyel is the latest to decide to make himself look like a moron. I hope he doesnt' break a rib patting himself on the back...
Some highlights (note that this is an opinion piece, so none of this has, you know, evidence):
People involved with this story have been lying since it broke. The benefit of the doubt is extended only to those who have earned it. The Michigan football program, led by one Michigan Man in particular, has sacrificed any claim to that benefit. Since this story broke Oct. 19, and as it has escalated, Michigan has earned only doubt.
Michigan has been cheating. Start there.
Connor Stalions, the former UM “analyst” accused of orchestrating the sign-stealing campaign, is no patsy – his integrity could fit in a thimble – but there’s just no way he was acting alone, as he insists.
McCarthy’s coaches knew what the defense was doing, which allowed them to call the perfect play. J.J. McCarthy had to execute it, yes, but the heaviest lifting had already been done by Connor Stalions.
Let's be clear here: at best, Stalions was in a grey area. But to suggest that somebody could "call the perfect play" if they knew what the defense was doing betrays a complete lack of knowledge of, well, football.
Also noted: not a peep about other teams seemingly having Michigan's signals. Shouldn't that have balanced the scales, at a minimum?

Don't give this clown clicks.
November 8th, 2023 at 4:09 PM ^
He can't even spell Doyle correctly.
November 8th, 2023 at 3:01 PM ^
Doyel can kick rocks
November 8th, 2023 at 3:09 PM ^
Schedule the award ceremony so he can get his certificate.
November 8th, 2023 at 3:12 PM ^
That is beautiful.
November 8th, 2023 at 3:18 PM ^
Lmao. This “scandal” is serving as a giant sieve for hypocrites and idiots.
November 8th, 2023 at 4:25 PM ^
oops, someone has the receipts
November 8th, 2023 at 3:01 PM ^
Why are you giving this guy air? He is obviously doing it for attention. It's obvious from the quotes you cited that he doesn't even understand what's going on. Ignore him like the rest of us and move on
November 8th, 2023 at 3:04 PM ^
Fair -- the answer is, because he's a nationally-known writer with an absurd take that I thought people might find interesting, even if nobody was likely to agree. It appears I misjudged. :)
November 8th, 2023 at 3:08 PM ^
I get it and I'm not attacking you. It's fun to bash on terrible takes like this! But the more it spreads, the more he'll be encouraged to keep doing it. Ideally he gets no reaction and realizes his stupid opinions are being ignored
November 8th, 2023 at 3:19 PM ^
"I get it and I'm not attacking you."
Except that you did attack him - so we can ignore your stupid opinions, too, right?
November 8th, 2023 at 3:39 PM ^
Seems like you are the one doing the attacking. He just asked a question.
November 8th, 2023 at 3:11 PM ^
If JJ performs like the way we think he can perform in the next three games, he is going to win it or at least be invited. If he outperforms everyone and still doesn't win it, it tells more about the people who didn't vote for him and not JJ or Harbaugh.
Anyway, not sure how you could have posted it without a link. May be a PSA that this guy may not deserve a click. That is all I got
November 8th, 2023 at 3:13 PM ^
Catch 22
He's only "nationally known" because he writes shit like this, and message boards like this here give it life. Stop, and his business model dies.
November 8th, 2023 at 3:27 PM ^
Co-signed. I would suggest that given this dufus basically is a one-trick pony, "I hate Michigan and everything about them" I would add him to the perma-ban list.
FWIW somebody got Bolivia'd last week for post Sr Yacht. That idiot is basically a neighbor of mine who makes his living off social media by doing stupid things like faking falling down when making a first pitch at a baseball game, eating a chicken nugget for every basket the Cavs score against Denver and visiting all 50 capitals in a month.
He's a shitload less damaging to Michigan than this asshole is that's for sure.
November 8th, 2023 at 3:40 PM ^
Guaranteed his next piece on this will include Tom Brady. This loser is still whining about "deflategate". Lil Greggy, it was 45 -7!!!!
November 8th, 2023 at 4:45 PM ^
I must not get out much. For a nationally known writer, I had never heard of him. And now I know why.
November 8th, 2023 at 3:45 PM ^
A fair take.
Also, his refusal to vote for JJ (on questionable grounds) could be the difference between JJ winning or not.
November 8th, 2023 at 3:02 PM ^
why post shit like this? it's exactly what they want, attention, clicks, etc.
November 8th, 2023 at 3:03 PM ^
Gregg Doyel can't even spell Greg or Doyle correctly.
November 8th, 2023 at 3:24 PM ^

“We think they are going to try to cover our receivers and possibly sack our QB. Dial up the PERFECT play to thwart that.”
November 8th, 2023 at 3:04 PM ^
Doyel does not rule.
November 8th, 2023 at 3:18 PM ^
Doyel eats ass.
November 8th, 2023 at 3:04 PM ^
Seems his own integrity could fit in a thimble given the volume of facts he seems not interested in acknowledging -- like the inclusion of Purdue in the latest evolution of the broader situation.
November 8th, 2023 at 3:08 PM ^
He is obviously a fan on some level, and an interested party. Not a neutral observer.
November 8th, 2023 at 3:04 PM ^
"Oh no, some dipshit in Indiana has an opinion!" - no one.
November 8th, 2023 at 9:32 PM ^
I gave you a thumbs up... but next time you call all of indiana people who root for Michigan out over the other 2 million indiana residents.. maybe not. Can't help where you live! Sorry..I took offense!
November 8th, 2023 at 3:05 PM ^
Haven't we learned our lesson here to never, I mean NEVER trust a Gregg?
November 8th, 2023 at 3:06 PM ^
Honestly, fuck this guy and the entire mainstream sports media.
One of the founding concepts of our legal system is innocent until proven guilty. Until Michigan has been convicted of improprieties (or in this case, adjudicated to have done something improper after an investigation), the presumption should be that we are innocent. Moreover, with the new counter-evidence coming out that pretty much all of the teams we played were doing the exact same thing - actually, worse, because their COACHES were involved in sharing information about Michigan - to me, whatever Michigan may have done through a rogue low-level employee AT BEST leveled the playing field.
The media and talking heads are running with this story because it generates clicks. Michigan is one of, if not the, most brand name schools in the country, so writing about us, especially in such strident terms, is going to get clicks. At this point, I am firmly in the "don't feed the trolls" camp.
November 8th, 2023 at 3:06 PM ^
Seems fair, JJ doesn't give Dreg Doyle creedence. Thanks for exposing your soon to be unheard red ass Dreg! Harbaugh's fanbase remembers.
November 8th, 2023 at 3:07 PM ^
Tell me you’re a horrible “journalist” without telling me you’re a horrible “journalist”
I use the term journalist sparingly with this moron and everything that is coming out.
November 8th, 2023 at 3:29 PM ^
Hey Dreg a bunch of monkeys patting each other on the back for awards they alone see should also factor in these same brethren pick and eat nits off of you. The value of the source of prominence is declining.
November 8th, 2023 at 3:45 PM ^
Just a quick search on X, he blends in with the cesspool of these so called journalists. It gets good when you go to their pages and see the bias. Makes much more sense. Clicks = $$. Truth be damned!
November 8th, 2023 at 3:08 PM ^
The "spokesman" for Summer's Eve and Massengale weighs in. Doyel is a complete fraud. Actually a piece of shit.
What Ted Williams told his son completely applies to Doyel: "the best part of you ran down your mother's leg!"
November 8th, 2023 at 3:08 PM ^
Then I guess he’ll just have to win it next year
November 8th, 2023 at 3:09 PM ^
Who in the f*ck is stealing the signs from the defense? I don't even get that. That means we have some next level coordinators who call the play, watch for a sign from the D, decipher it, think about the formation, and then call a play to exploit the defensive alignment. If that is case, I am really pissed about our run game because they should be getting 200-300 yards a game if they know the holes to hit. FFS people, I mean really.
November 8th, 2023 at 3:10 PM ^
Gerggggg doesn't need to know "how football works" to do his job. He just has to type vitriol and hit "send."
November 8th, 2023 at 3:26 PM ^
^^^^ Exactly.
Last I checked - a football team's offense looks at certain variables - let's note a few of them
- "down and distance",
- "player personnel",
- "field position",
- "score",
- "time" - quarter of the game and remaining time in the quarter / half
- "weather conditions"
Then, a combination of the OC and head coach - determine what play the offense will run. The defense adjusts to it - and, the offense might communicate additional adjustments (some known as blocking schemes) - to improve the likelihood of the offensive play's success.
Has anyone seen an offense look at an opposing defense and THEN call the play?
November 8th, 2023 at 3:33 PM ^
Has anyone seen an offense look at an opposing defense and THEN call the play?
Yes -- they will look at the initial formation and then audible. That's why you'll see the players check to the sidelines after lining up in formation. However, that doesn't mean they're waiting for signs. Mostly they're looking at personnel packages and alignments.
November 8th, 2023 at 4:43 PM ^
J - I believe I understand your point. My view is - the offense has a play - they line up for that play - see what the D shows - and then, if necessary, adjusts the play call based on what the defense is showing.
Let's say it's 3rd and 3 - there's no time pressure - the ball is on the opponent's 25 yard line - and, the O has an option - be it a run play, or to adjust to a short passing route. My view is - nothing is done in a vacuum. There's a back and forth - both sides adjusting to what they see.
My perspective is - it usually begins with the offense.
November 8th, 2023 at 3:11 PM ^
I saw Doyel's tweet last night, commented my complaint, and then muted the jackass.
He won't be getting any more clicks from me.
November 8th, 2023 at 3:12 PM ^
We've seen some mind-baffling dumb takes on Stalions-gate. This might be the dumbest, which is a quite a statement given the existence of Thamel-toe and Petey.
Why anyone would post the link here, or anywhere, is beyond me?

Sounds like someone that should get their Heisman vote revoked.
November 8th, 2023 at 3:41 PM ^
This. He has indicated that he is biased and will not give a candidate a fair chance, all because of some unproven allegations based on limited facts. I know it is all about clicks, but the Heisman folks should look for better voters.
November 8th, 2023 at 3:17 PM ^
Look, I saw that fecal matter this morning and decided not to sully the board with that crap.
Also, understand that Doyel is a print guy. He may have written this with no knowledge about the Rutgers-OSU-Purdue threesome.
