UCLA Upsets Bama! Bring On The Bruins!

Submitted by Mike Damone on March 28th, 2021 at 9:50 PM

Unreal.  Bama hits a 3 point bomb to send it to OT, but UCLA pulls it out.

Going to be a great game Tuesday - but we should and will prevail!

Go Blue!

You made a lazy, illogical argument, then you twisted yourself in knots to defend it

Lol what? I made a statement then defended it with evidence. You seem to think that winning games = well coached, which is not true. They barely run an offense, that is fact. They're #55 in defense on KenPom, that is a fact. Cronin didn't foul and gave up a great look from 3 to end regulation, which is almost blowing the game.

Guess what: the team that makes more shots wins. They play smart. They play poised. They spread the wealth

None of those things disprove that they don't run an offense or that they're poorly coached. I'm also not even sure you've watched UCLA play

Literally every team left at this point is on a winning streak. They’re all “hot”. It’s just that UCLA doesn’t get much better than a team that can barely squeak by an hilariously-bad-night Alabama.  One of these two teams had a chance to play much better than this on Tuesday.  I’ll take the one that doesn’t.

I absolutely did not expect to dominate overtime after the shock of the buzzer beater. Really impressive.

Not sure what to make of UCLA. They're an 11 seed, but they're hot. Their road may not have been super hard till tonight but you could say the same for us. I like our odds. We're hot too

Go Blue!   I like the low post match up on UCLA.  Hey, I like many of the match ups. It will be interesting to see if Michigan get back to some decent field goal percentage.

Can't check my math right now because I'm on mobile, but...

Is Florida State the only non-PAC 12 team in the tourney to defeat a PAC-12 team? (Colorado)

If so, the transitive property must hold!  Or maybe it's like Highlander, where our decapitation of FSU causes us to absorb their powers, which include the ability to defeat a PAC-12 team in this tournament.

If you buy into KenPom, UCLA (20) is the second worst team left in the field.  Oregon State is the worst by far (43).  Alabama was 8 FWIW.  We are 4 now, Houston jumped us.

It's also been fascinating to watch Kenpom adjust to the tourney.  Oregon state was in the 70s or 80s at the start and UCLA was 44 I believe.  Hard corrections happening to the Pac 12 SOS.

It was also interesting watching Michigan's EM drop when they weren't playing as everyone else was losing.  Today's game helps there.

I thought 'bama was supposed to be a lot better than LSU.

Anyway, just think if the OTHER play-in team that played UCLA would have kept winning up to today.

Ugh UCLA seems to be on one of those team of destiny runs. I can just see it now: UCLA beats MSU in the First Four and Michigan to go to the Final Four.

Eh, Michigan should be heavily favored in this game. Michigan plays strong defense and has length that Bama doesn't have.

MSU defense did well but let them get open in 3 pt line. That would not be a problem with Juwan. They'll run them off the line and force them to take long twos.

Hunter should feast down low and Mike Smith finally gets to face a PG in his size.

Its the Elite Eight - either team was going to be tough.

I think Bama only lost because they had an off night at the FT line... Both teams can shoot the 3, but Michigan faces a more 'typical' offense with UCLA I think, that does play a half court game, whereas Bama would try to speed Michigan up.

I think UCLA poses a puzzle Michigan has dealt with before at least.

UCLA plays like a typical B1G team where they'll play a physical defense and do just enough on offense to get by which is a Mick Cronin's trademark from Cincinnati. The difference is UCLA isn't athletic like you usually see from Cincinnati.

I prefer this matchup over Bama. Juwan can use Franz to guard either Juzang or Jaquez to shut them down. Hunter should have a huge advantage as a post player.

Plus, Mike Smith finally gets to face someone in his size which would be a huge welcome change for him after facing LSU and FSU teams.

I was kind of hoping that Alabama would pull it out. I think USC plays more like us and have some good shooters. I think it will be a close game and as long as we don't lay an egg we should win.

Just please for the love of god don’t make Michigan the late game on Tuesday night. I know UCLA is west coast but I really don’t want to stay up until midnight on a work night.

I’m hoping Gonzaga-USC/Oregon will be the nightcap.

Anyone care to take a guess at the Vegas line for UM/UCLA Tuesday evening?  I'll take a stab at it:

I am guessing UM will be favored by 7.  Perhaps 8.  Feels more likely 7 to me.

FSU was also hot until today, but then they weren't.  If they had any competency at the FT line today, Bama wins this easily.  At some point, whatever earned UCLA only an 11 seed will manifest itself.  I like our chances a lot more vs. them than Alabama, although at this point I am not going to doubt what this team can do.

UCLA lost a lot of close games to decent teams. 7 of their 9 losses were under 10 points.  There were blown out twice, but not since early February.

Basically they are a good team that lost a lot of close games.   They lost their last 4 games of the season by a combined 22 points.

They are more solid of a team than your usual 11 seed I think.  I suspect they are more of a 6-seed type team.   Dangerous, but we should win unless we have a totally off night.
