What happens if nebraska decides to play football this year without the B1g?
Scott frost has commented on the possibility previously ( as documented in another board post), but what does the b1g do with nebraska if they choose to play football with another conference this year?
https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/29640592/nebraska-foot…
I grew up as a child of the 90s and i always loved michigan, but nebraska football was something that i always loved to watch. Option football, tommie frazier, fast defenses. Even into the days of eric crouch tearing up nd in a stadium that was at least half red, nebraska until they fired solich was pure bliss on a gridiron.
As such i was excited when they joined the b1g. But it does not seem that they have added much of value. Its pretty much a mediocre school with a large football following in the stadium, and a few solid non revenue sports.
Is the b1g better off cutting nebraska loose if they play in another conference this year? Does the b1g replace them if we do kick them out?
My call is yes, give them the boot. They are more of a big12 school any day.
Kick the tires on nd, even with the nbc contract.
Take a shot at texas and oklahoma, even with the longhorn network.
Worst case, cut the divisions and run as a 13 team league. Ncaa has already let the big 12 have their top 2 teams have a championship game with no divisions.

That was amazing, and while I had a solid day overall, your missouri commentary made it.

Not gonna happen.

They don't belong in the B1G. They are ranked in the 160's academically. Every other school is in the top 90. They are an academic and cultural outlier. For all the bitching about Rutger and Maryland geography and competitively lacking - they fit the league's academic norms.
August 11th, 2020 at 5:58 PM ^
I live in Nebraska and can confirm. Nebraska has a natural geographic rivalry with Iowa, but aside from that they made a huge mistake leaving behind their Big 12 tradition and history. They’re a much better cultural fit with Oklahoma, Texas, Baylor, Kansas etc.

I didn't even know he went there
That's a bad sign for them, he should be on the cover of all of their brochures

Warren Buffett and Johnny Carson are pretty famous but even with Google that's all I got.

During WW2 Johnny Carson attended Millsaps College. My grandfather (US Navy Lt. Commander) was one of Carson's V-12 Navy College Training Program instructors.

Warren Buffett is a pretty huge deal to have as an alum. But other than that, yeah, the list of prominent non football alums is pretty short.

Where has XM been btw? I am hoping things are ok with him.

Putin is correct.
XM is a great guy and one of the best MGoPosters, but like many others who seldom or never post anymore, he's fed up with the misbehavior all over the MGoBoard lately.
Politics is a decisive and hateful thing, and we'd all be better for it if we'd leave it at the door when we log in here.

Sure, why not. I did enjoy their rivalries with Wiscy, Iowa, and Minnesota though.
Kick the tires on nd, even with the nbc contract.
No. Fuck ND.
Take a shot at texas and oklahoma, even with the longhorn network.
No. Texas is too much drama. Oklahoma won't come without Okie St and Texas.
Worst case, cut the divisions and run as a 13 team league
Worst case is they stop at 13. Rutgers and Maryland need to gtfo. I'm fine either way with Nebraska, but those 2 were quite possibly the most terrible additions that ever could've happened.
August 11th, 2020 at 5:44 PM ^
Maryland is a C-. Underperformed in everything but I think they're good at lacrosse or some shit. Decent school
Nebraska is a D. Terrible in everything, including school
Rutgers is an F. F for being Rutgers
August 11th, 2020 at 7:44 PM ^
I am biased, but Maryland was a decent addition. MBB, WBB, Lax are pretty solid. Football has been terrible, and they don't really seem like a B10 football fit, but they are good for other conference sports.
August 11th, 2020 at 7:51 PM ^
Agreed that Maryland gets a low pass, but they are firmly in Indiana, Purdue, and Northwestern territory
August 11th, 2020 at 7:56 PM ^
Maryland has been a great addition. They are (or should I say WERE) an easy win every year on an otherwise brutal conference schedule.
August 12th, 2020 at 12:31 AM ^
Maryland isn't a great fit football wise but they are arguably one of the best overall athletic departments in the conference. Since joining the big ten men's basketball won the big ten regular season in 2020, made 3 ncaa tourneys and have a sweet 16 appearance. Men's baseball has made 3 ncaa tourney's and made the super regional once. Men's soccer won the NCAA title in 2018 and makes the ncaa's pretty much every year and they've won multiple big ten titles. Maryland's women's basketball team has made the Final Four, a couple other sweet 16 appearances and 9 big ten titles combined between the regular season and conference tourney. Field Hockey has two NCAA runner up finishes and wins either the big ten regular season or conference tourney just about every year. Maryland's women's lacrosse team has won 3 NCAA titles, been runner up another time and dominates the big ten regular season and conference tournament. Men's lacrosse has an NCAA title and pretty much makes the Final Four every year.

Nebraska wants an excuse to leave since it’s an also-ran in the B10. They ought to be playing Iowa State in some dust bowl in the middle of nowhere.
August 11th, 2020 at 5:51 PM ^
Nebraska is the undersized basketball player on varsity who can't keep up, so he wants to go back to the junior varsity team
Rutgers is the coach's 13 year old son that shoots around at practice, but the players don't like him so they just block his shit and dunk on him endlessly
August 11th, 2020 at 5:49 PM ^
I can’t find the statement that Iowa issued but they basically said it’s not a possibility because they’re contractually obligated to follow what the B1G says.

No Notre Dame. I would rather step on a nail than have Notre Dame in the BigTen.
Kick them out for hockey. No half in and half out for a quasi-ACC team.
August 11th, 2020 at 5:54 PM ^
Im sorry, i should have clarified. Im saying as a full member who takes the nebraska spot in the west.
August 11th, 2020 at 7:03 PM ^
If they were so inclined, that would be a pretty sweet deal for ND. Playing for the B1G trophy in Indianapolis just about every year against OSU.
August 11th, 2020 at 5:52 PM ^
I mean, the Big 12 didn't want them and the Big 10 isn't crazy about them either. I guess they could try being independent and going 9-3 each season and see how that feels.
August 11th, 2020 at 6:45 PM ^
They would have to rehire Bo Pellini or Frank Solich for 9-3. Who has the Pellini cat picture?
August 11th, 2020 at 5:53 PM ^
Another thread will be started about it.
August 11th, 2020 at 6:08 PM ^
F*ck Nebraska. If they want to go elsewhere, let them go, but tell them not to come back.
August 11th, 2020 at 6:17 PM ^
All I can say is that we're beginning to run short on teams that Scott Frost can later claim he has in fact outhit.
I will never understand why Nebraska dumped a very fine Big XII tradition for a conference like ours where they are a terrible fit.
August 11th, 2020 at 6:54 PM ^
I guess the obvious answer is $$$ but I’ve never been able to figure it out either. My pet theory is they perceived the BIG (at the time they joined) as a weaker football conference and hence they were more likely to reclaim their football glory there. I’m not sure they thought about the sacrifice of having Texas be a relevant recruiting state for them (they’ll never make in-roads to Pennsylvania or Ohio) and the possibility PSU, MSU, Michigan and Minnesota would all take very large steps forward after they joined. I award them zero sympathy points.
August 11th, 2020 at 7:38 PM ^
I think the obvious answer is the answer here--money. There was also a power struggle with Texas that Nebraska continually lost from the beginnings of the Big XII (like accepting Prop 48 players, etc.). I think NU knew the Big 10 wasn't going to give them the power they probably had in the old Big 8, but I'm sure they were tired of Texas calling the shots as well. They may have also thought the Big XII wouldn't be around by 2020 if Texas and a few friends took their ball out west.
August 11th, 2020 at 8:02 PM ^
I think part of it, just like PSU back in '90 was misplaced institutional arrogance.
They thought (from a football perspective) that they'd open up the great lakes region for recruits. In fact, the opposite is true (not that there were a lot of Neb players but I think Texas players are the ones who said, why go to the B10 when I could play in the B12/SEC at home?)
August 12th, 2020 at 1:53 AM ^
IIRC it was mostly because of jealously towards Texas & their toady Oklahoma at the time. With the TV deal (LHN) and location of the B12 Championship game (Cowboy Stadium at the time) it was obvious favoritism was running rampant and it was time to move on. The B12 pretty much treated them like a red hea...nvm. I believe that was the gist of it though.
August 11th, 2020 at 6:18 PM ^
This would be discussed at a high level before Nebraska scheduled any games.
Nebraska won't leave the Big Ten just to possibly play some games this Fall. The Big Ten controls their media rights. They would have a hard time collecting any TV money, so there is very little to be gained. They stand to lose money, a lot of money, by leaving. Athletics wouldn't be the largest loser.
The Big Ten could agree to part ways with Nebraska. I very much doubt they would agree to let them play on their own and stay in the conference. Nebraska needs allies, at least 2-3 other Big Ten schools willing to do the same thing.
August 11th, 2020 at 6:21 PM ^
Folks act like they’d be cheating on the conference.
The B1G & PAC 12 have put themselves in a very vulnerable spot.
Conferences like the SEC and ACC could really start using this as a catalyst for moving towards super conferences.
