Football Play By Play Job?
In the event of an open position for the "Play by Play" portion of the Michigan Football Radio Broadcast, who do you think would fill it? Who would you like to see? I'm not a huge Matt Shepard fan but I would think the job is his considering he does play by play for basketball, high school football/ basketball, Eastern Michigan Football and Detroit Lions preseason games.
Reincarnate Ufer gets my vote. Let's get on that.
they said Ufer has another gig up there and is unavailable. they said they could send woody since he was being transfered down 'south', if you know what they mean.
that's just the point. When I listen to my team on the radio, I expect hardcore homerism. Ron Santo with the Cubs used to live and die with every at bat; whenever opposing teams made a play, Ron would groan before the play-by-play guy even made the call.
When Dickerson calls a home run, his voice raises, but half the time he seems like he's cheering for the wrong team. I don't want him to be excited when Paul Konerko goes deep; I want him to share my pain with me.
I finally broke down and started paying $ to stream broadcasts, in part because I like listening to Dickerson call games.
the best since Ernie. Frank did a bad job, Jim thinks he is cute with his "nice area" schtick, the Seattle Boys (forget their names) were just barely ok.
What about Doug Karsh? I see him at the Softball games all the time. He is certainly knowledgeable about M sports and knows the campus.
In a perfect world it would be Mark Champion with Ron Wolfley. Wolfley is the color commentator for the Arizona Cardinals and sounds like Joe from the Family Guy.
You cannot fire Jim Brandstatter. He may not sound like a cartoon guy but he's awesome.
There is nothing that isn't funny when you're listening to (someone who sounds like) Patrick Warburton. We could be losing 63-0 and I'd have a huge grin on my face if Warburton was calling the game.
I would not be a fan of Shepherd. My suggestion, if he could make it work, would be Dan Dickerson. He was on the broadcasts in, I think, the early or mid 90s. Of course, he already has a goodjob that would make the M play by play job a tough proposition.
From what I've heard of Shepard on basketball games I think he's kind of awful, I'd like it if we tried someone new. No idea who though
I know it's a really unpopular opinion around here, but I'm with you. He's frustratingly difficult to follow.
Shepard is not good on PBP
I second this. He is better off a TV play-by-play.
But another guy who has called basketball on radio before is someone I wouldn't mind trying--Ben Holden.
Holo-Ufer
Anybody but Dan Miller.
Pam Ward FTW!
I disagree, Beth Mowins is the logical choice.
"I really wanted to give our fans that WOW factor on the radio broadcast."
BANG.
why not matt millen? he brings great nfl insight with him to the broadcast, and is excellent at identifying which of these college kids will grow up to become the big dogs down the road.
I'm not sure how much experience he has in play by play but I'd love to see him get a shot. Karsch and Brandstatter would be great together. Maybe Dana Jacobson could take over sideline reporting duties.
Now who do we think they should hire to replace you? I know that you still have your job, but why should that stop us from discussing on a message board who we would like to see replace you. That wouldn't offend you, would it?
I don't see the problem in discussing the possible successor for Michigan's radio play by play guy. I never said that this person would take over this season. We discuss public figures successors all the time. It comes with the job. Everyone else seems to be handling this topic with grace.
His soapbox is so large that you might have to yell if you want him to hear you.
And when that happens, who will replace him? Interestingly, it's pretty much the same list of broadcasters in the area that were working 8 years ago when I left, except that Shepard and Holden have gained more experience.
if we were discussing Mattison's successor. Another position at Michigan that we are all concerned with filling and that has and will continue to be discussed prior to his departure.
In an ideal world it would be Gus Johnson but doubt he could do it with his Fox contract.
Rich Eisen?
/s
I think his NFL Network contract keeps him pretty busy.
Television is overrated.
Mike Hart is just a bit busy... You know coaching at Eastern Michigan.
Super PBP guy.
Hey I work in TV, but have always had more of a face for radio. If the fit hits the shan, I say we vote for one of our own.
I am Rhino77, and I approve this message.
