Mattison Extended To 2016
If you were looking for some sort of timeline as to when Greg Mattison might retire, you've got at least a few years before your can get your fret on:
Greg Mattison's three-year contract extension will keep him as the
#Michigan defensive coordinator through the 2016 season.
Four more years, four more years, four more years. At least. With recruits chattering about how the guy seems 25 he may find a wellspring of Red-like longevity in there and keep going.
At the very least, Michigan won't have to worry about a major staff transition until after a couple seasons of Hoke's program running full-tilt like Hoke wants to run it.

Excellent news!! I always love Friday's coupled with good news. Now hopefully the day concludes even better with basketball and hockey victories!

I wonder why only 3 more years? Was that Mattison's wish? If I was Dave Brandon or Hokey I would give him a 10 year contract.
At Notre Dame, perchance?

Monte Kiffen is 73 and still going. Although given recent results, let age be the only comparison to Mattison.

Mattison could turn out to be like Monte Kiffin, but with much better parenting skills. Kiffin, at 73, did manage to escape his son's circus, and has landed well as the DC in Dallas.
Edit: beaten to the punch by a post that appeared while I was typing. C'est la vie.

This might be Muppet worthy.
I like your version better. I missed the dig on Lane.

Where post season dreams go to die.

Are we sure we want to saddle the Michigan football program with a guy who hasn't yet been able to deliver even one measly Big Ten championship?
[insert obligatory "/s" here, in bold flashing font]

And a guy who focuses on the the Big 10 championship instead of a national title!
Love,
Drew Sharp

PLUS, who gave up the winning points in every loss over the last two years? THE DEFENSE.
March 15th, 2013 at 12:49 PM ^
He is going to the NFL with Hoke when he leaves soon anyway. Is that joke played out yet?
March 15th, 2013 at 12:54 PM ^
In that case would Mike Hart be considered as a serious candidate? haha
What I'd like to see is Mike Hart apply for one of Dantonio's assistant coaches positions.

so you're still good to go, as far as I'm concerned.

Especially that one where he jiggles his man boobies.
March 15th, 2013 at 12:55 PM ^
if you were born in 1949 as Mattison.
Oh yeah. I forgot. He's probably a millionaire.
Nevermind.

outstanding news and a great start to the weekend. So glad I can stop worrying about him retiring for now.

Really happy for coach Mattison and Michigan!
Are singing and dancing in my head
...this was more about recruiting than anything else.
This was about Ohio coaches telling recruits that Mattison will retire before they finish their career.
I think GMat's got plenty of years left in him, but I wouldn't be shocked if when he does retire that he's got 4 or 5 years left on his contract. But I guarantee they'll come to some kind of agreement when that day comes as to his compensation upon retirement.
I've had multiple AD's extend contracts of guys they were going to fire or let retire. I believe Ralph Friedgen was one of them.
This is good. If he decides to retire at that point he can ride off into the sunset with one or two national championships.
I'm not sure to upvote for the sarcasm or downvote for giving me a PTSD flashback to GERG defenses.
It's going to be interesting to see what his salary is going to be. Not that he'd want more money or that Michigan can't afford it, but more in the "we're going to pay our coordinators X" stand point. If we're going to give raises to assistants and everything to better compete with SEC salaries.
Extremely excited we get Mattison for MOAR years.

This is fantastic news!
Mattison and Michigan! With the glut of talent now arriving yearly coupled with current defenders knowing the system, Mattison will command an army of destruction.
Across the midwest, with this news B1G offensive coordinators and recruiters are throwing chairs and cursing profusely. *
* Except in east lansing- where this occurs daily anyway.
