Agreed that Q pulled the goalie too early, for exactly the reason you mentioned. They were doing well 5-on-5 in the third period, but had a lousy scheme for playing with an extra man - they just would pass the puck around the perimeter and eventually have someone blast away from the outside. Big surprise, Michigan intercepts one of the perimeter passes and puts it in the empty net.

It's uniform by county, not…

It's uniform by county, not across the whole state.  In Ann Arbor, for example, spring break was scheduled to run from March 30 through April 3, but the Plymouth-Canton spring break was scheduled to start the following week (April 6 - 10).

Rule: Michigan is a much…

Rule: Michigan is a much better team when its best player (Livers) is available

Corollary: Michigan is a worse team when its best player has a bad game

Someone suggested in the comments to Ace’s game post that Livers wasn’t 100 percent. Let’s hope that’s the case because he got beat regularly on D and went heroball on a few offensive possessions.

I'm still not following you…

I'm still not following you.  Both the article and quote indicate that Shea would have pursued the possibility of a 5th year if he thought he could get a prompt ruling from the NCAA.  Since he didn't think he could, he didn't pursue it.  Where's the ambiguity?  As far as Harbaugh's concerned, since Shea decided to leave, there presumably was no need to say yes/no to a request that never came.

Or? Is there a difference I…

Or? Is there a difference I'm missing between this and the OP?

The guy makes a simple…

The guy makes a simple request, and instead you post a gif with Mr. Burns saying something totally different?  Rude.

With just one win this…

With just one win this weekend, the math would have been much easier.  Bummer.  I can't believe how disciplined ND was in both games, particularly Saturday -- to the point that they hardly even got whistled for offsides.

Irony, yes, but also…

Irony, yes, but also dickishness.  Don't sell him short.

Maybe naming someone from…

Maybe naming someone from this millennium would strengthen your argument . . . .

Agreed, this is BS -- and…

Agreed, this is BS -- and also the pole hadn't established its position when he ran into it.

Some?  Try all.  Don't…

Some?  Try all.  Don't forget, the guy's still on the MSU payroll, drawing $1 million for doing God knows what.

That "highlight" reel -- oof…

That "highlight" reel -- oof.  That's a whole lotta highly makeable shots missed.

Don, do you mean these guys?

Don, do you mean these guys?

Sorry, guys, I went on…

Sorry, guys, I went on Friday but missed Saturday's game.  Should I mention that I also went to the Friday PSU game (a 4-1 win) but not the Saturday game that weekend (a 3-1 loss)?  Guess I need to work on my Saturday scheduling priorities from here on out.

And what is the source of…

And what is the source of the "not always so pretty reality on the inside" that we're being told about?  JUB did actual, y'know, research when writing his books.  As far as I know, Brian has not cultivated any comparable inside sources -- in fact, he seems to pride himself on maintaining an outsider's perspective.  Seems like we're getting rumors and, quite frankly, projection, rather than inside info.

Well, if you want to believe…

Well, if you want to believe that OSU or Clemson provide better academic opportunities for their student-athletes than, say, Rice, go right ahead.  Since mountains of data indicate that the academics at Rice are superior, I'm going to infer that APR is measuring something other than a football program's emphasis on academics.

Well I've never been to…

Well I've never been to Spain . . .

Congrats!  I'm sure GWGoBlog…

Congrats!  I'm sure GWGoBlog will offer some strong arguments in that school's favor, and it's tough to pass up the chance to be a Colonial.  On the other hand, there's a rumor that Brian/Seth will award you a million MGoPoints if you choose Michigan -- or send you to Bolivia if you choose poorly.

Tends to undercut your point…

Tends to undercut your point when Clemson is right behind Michigan in 7th, Alabama is 14th, and OSU is 21st -- ahead of, for example, Georgia Tech (28), Rice (38), and Cal (41).  For the most recent year, Clemson moved up to 3rd, OSU jumped to 12th, and Alabama is 17th -- all ahead of Michigan at 22.  In short, using APR as a gauge of academic emphasis is misguided.

That's a good one -- the IRS…

That's a good one -- the IRS enforcing the tax code against a fraudulent charitable foundation!

Agreed.  What evidence is…

Agreed.  What evidence is there that the failure to hire Clinkscale was due to Michigan's unwillingness to come up with another $100K?  Seems implausible.

You make a lot of great…

You make a lot of great points.  Having said that, I'm just going to sit here and wait for the pill.

Ace, a head's-up please --…

Ace, a head's-up please -- do you have a creepy-ass mascot lined up for every B1G team?  I'm going to have to increase my therapy sessions.

I will continue to lobby for…

I will continue to lobby for a redesign of Crisler into an underwater, poorly lit ballroom a la Atlantis.  Sure, some of you will insist on being eggheads and talk about opposing team scouting and such, but Michigan hasn't hit its threes since the team left the Bahamas.

If you *really* loved it you…

If you *really* loved it you would have triple-posted . . . .

Your timing was better than…

Your timing was better than mine.  I lived in San Francisco until mid-1988, so I went to the ASU/John Cooper Rose Bowl in January of 1987 but had moved to Michigan by the time of the '89 Rose Bowl.  Bummer.

Nice writeup, David.  Were…

Nice writeup, David.  Were you at Friday's game?  That's the first one I've been able to attend this season, and they also played really well that night -- and got a comfortable win to show for it.  Solid play both nights of the weekend series against a good Penn State team -- could Michigan be figuring some things out to get back to at least a respectable level?

Oh, I see, a head coach can…

Oh, I see, a head coach can only serve *one* objective.  It can't possibly be the case that a coach can try to win football games *and* enhance the character of his players?  Let's turn your questions around:  what's your evidence that Michigan's off-season trips have had a negative effect on the team's ability to win football games?

And secure the ball on the…

And secure the ball on the way down while you're at it.  Great stuff.

They talked about his YAC, didn't they?

Yeah, I know I'd love to…

Yeah, I know I'd love to have a beer with a guy who calls my observations "stupefying" and says I "obviously" lack a "basic level of comprehension on how [basketball] is played in 2019."  Maybe dial down the heat a bit?

I wish I could upvote this…

I wish I could upvote this comment more than once.  Brooks looked lost at the beginning of last year, and made dramatic progress during the season -- so much so that I thought his likely contribution to this year's team was being significantly discounted.  Doesn't seem unreasonable to hope to see the same from DDJ.

To add to the comparison --…

To add to the comparison -- uncharacteristic number of turnovers by the QB (Z).  Is Shea setting the tone for both the football and the basketball team?

Rudy something, I think.

Rudy something-or-other, I think.

Sorry, but the Lions'…

Sorry, but the Lions' drought is a *lot* easier to explain -- the "curse" just happens to completely coincide with Ford family ownership.

I second the aesthetic take …

I second the aesthetic take -- assuming they were even close to comparable in effectiveness (and there's no reason to think otherwise), the MMB's actual raincoats beat the heck out of the clear plastic trash bags used by the ND marching band.  I will also note that the tough-as-nails MMB only used the raincoats for pregame and took them off for the halftime show, thus accentuating the contrast with their Klan-like counterparts from ND.

I'm reaching out to someone…

I'm reaching out to someone named [checks notes] "Marvin Burks" to play QB for Michigan.  He certainly will not wear number 10, nor will he be Tom Brady, I can assure you of that.

Aren't you going to tell us…

Aren't you going to tell us if you enjoyed the trip?  (I'm an old fogy so I can make this joke)

Hint -- *someone* got a TD…

Hint -- *someone* got a TD from one of his passes, but it wasn't MSU.

A quick scan reveals…

A quick scan reveals Michigan is *almost* #1 in one offensive stat category -- hurray!  But on closer look -- uh, never mind.

Props to Rutger for making …

Props to Rutger for making "IPA" a relevant football stat -- you know, inches per attempt?

I see now that you've …

I see now that you've (repeatedly) diagnosed Harbaugh's mental condition, you're moving on to Shea Patterson?

Just to confirm, the Alumni…

Just to confirm, the Alumni Band filled in the block M formed by the MMB at the end of the halftime show and played the last tune.

Gotcha, that makes sense.

Gotcha, that makes sense.

I'm not claiming to know the…

I'm not claiming to know the rule, but in both this and the podcast thread, the same language is quoted -- "applies only to the player who controls the snap *or* the resulting backward pass."  How does this support your point that "only the player who receives the snap can throw it away," given the additional language referring to the player who controls "the resulting backward pass"?  What am I missing?

Irregularities in the…

Irregularities in the recruitment of Billy Preston?  I'm gonna have to get back to you on that.

I mean -- it kind of *is*…

I mean -- it kind of *is* about Brian?  The point of coming to MGoBlog and reading a game column is to see what this particular guy made of this particular game-type substance.  Ideally, he draws your attention to meta-type things you might not have noticed or thought of.  If you're just looking for a blow-by-blow of what happened in the game, this isn't your go-to source.

The UFRs, on the other hand, are supposed to be objective measures of what happened in the game.  I think that there are things that can be learned from that sort of study of the Wisconsin game -- e.g., the OL seemed not-so-great in real time, but does that prove true in closer analysis and, if so, why did Michigan's seemingly-good OL perform poorly in this game?  Here's hoping Brian can fight through the malaise, roll up his sleeves, and dig into the game film.  I don't envy him that task, but I sure hope he does it anyway.

"Of course people will win…

"Of course people will win at Michigan."  Just like the last two coaches who *immediately* preceded Harbaugh . . . .
