Well said. I still feel Hemingway was robbed.
November 6th, 2011 at 11:39 AM ^
to my point. Being upset at the refs does not excuse bad play, playcalling, preparation. Hoping for a call from a ref at the end is a loser mentality. We should have won the game earlier or we might have won the game if our OC had run the best running QB in UM history from the 2.
I never said the word deserve in my entire post but go ahead and keep crying about the refs. Yes we were robbed but we put ourselves in that position.
November 5th, 2011 at 3:40 PM ^
True, but has Borges ever heard of a roll out with a 4.3 QB. No, let's just keep him in the pocket throwing over taller DL each play near the goal line.
November 5th, 2011 at 3:57 PM ^
You mean a QB who has like 40% accuracy on roll outs?
November 5th, 2011 at 4:37 PM ^
He means a QB who can get 3 yards on the ground at will.
November 5th, 2011 at 4:43 PM ^
In the middle of the field, yes. On the goal line it's a lot tougher. And if you get tackled inbounds, game's over.
If we had a timeout remaining, I could see it, but we were out. As it was, we scored on second down and got jobbed.
November 5th, 2011 at 5:22 PM ^
Yeah that was a bad call, but on 4th down with 2 seconds left, I would have rather seen a roll out for Denard to the right with a bunch of drags from the receivers/Koger. If the run's not there, throw it to the guy with the best chance at catching it.
Anyway, those turnovers and a few bad calls really hurt us. Onward to Illinois!
November 5th, 2011 at 7:22 PM ^
but does zero damage to other teams on scramble runs.
You'd think that Borges would have a Denard legs-based counter punch for blitzes.
November 5th, 2011 at 4:10 PM ^
Yeah, Denard doesn't have a great history on rollouts. I love Denard, but in my opinion, he works a lot from predetermined decisions. He's a running qb, but he's not necessarily a scrambling qb. If you roll him out, there's no guarantee that he tucks it and gets the TD. He could easily be sacked from hanging onto it too long or force it in somewhere for a bad pass because he's predetermined that it's a pass play.
November 5th, 2011 at 4:41 PM ^
It also seems like he gets fixated on whatever the "hot" route there is on a play. A lot of those deep balls that he threw today were to a guy (read: Junior Hemingway) who was covered very well. It seems like he doesn't check down very often.
November 5th, 2011 at 3:33 PM ^
There was already PI before that. He put 2 hands on Tree before that as the ball was being thrown.
November 5th, 2011 at 3:33 PM ^
....didn't belong on a college football field. It was an absolutely atrociously called game, and Michigan bore the brunt of the ref's ineptitude. But we put ourselves in a position for them to take it away from us. Not saying we shouldn't complain, but I'm more concerned about our playcalling and clock management.
That said - I hope none of those refs live close to a Michigan fan.
November 5th, 2011 at 3:33 PM ^
really just makes me sad.
November 5th, 2011 at 3:33 PM ^
We need to pick this game apart play by play for every missed bad call, bad spot, and all the crap in this game. Then start a petition, get enough signatures and send it to ESPN, the NCAA, and the B10...
I want an explanation for this, these people are paid way too much money for this crap.
November 5th, 2011 at 3:38 PM ^
Are you going to include Michigan's favorable calls also. Example: Mike Martin's non-called facemask on the safety last week.
November 5th, 2011 at 3:37 PM ^
We played like absolute shit but we still had a chance to win the game, despite deserving to lose the game. The refs obviously didn't help with this as there were three or four pass interference calls that either weren't called or called off. Not to mentiom the refs set the mood for how they were going to call the game when Ferentz complained about the spot in the 1st quarter without reviewing it.
Overall, I'm disappointed in both our team and the officials. Always sucks to lose a game because of the refs, even though we DID deserve to lose that game.
November 5th, 2011 at 3:33 PM ^
Looks like Michigan will be center stage for TWIS.
November 5th, 2011 at 3:35 PM ^
Michigan lost to one of the worst Iowa football teams in a long time.

Not to mention Koger had the first down on that play anyway!! What happened to forward progress??
November 5th, 2011 at 3:36 PM ^
to handle this loss if we had a chance to get a two point conversion and failed. But this just feels like we dressed up like a whore and then got raped.

November 5th, 2011 at 3:36 PM ^
The refs did not want michigan to win that game.
November 5th, 2011 at 3:37 PM ^
The worst thing about the 2nd down pass to me (besides the fact that it was completely clear it was a TD and should have been overturned, anyway), but the original call was not that the ball was juggled, it was the he was ob.
There were 2 judegements to be made on that:
1) was he in bounds or not
2) did he maintain control
On the field, 1) was ruled out of bounds, and 2) was ruled a good catch. 1) was clearly wrong, and 2) apparently was ruled inconclusive. Based on the original call, that would make the replay a TD.
November 5th, 2011 at 3:46 PM ^
Exactly what I was thinking. It was infuriating that the ref ruled him OB, yet he was CLEARLY inbounds. I still don't understand why it wasn't a TD just because there was no angle that could see the ball for the whole time.
November 5th, 2011 at 3:39 PM ^
it was whether the ball moved or not.
November 5th, 2011 at 4:26 PM ^
the right side of the field, and it looked pretty definitive that the ball didn't move. It was the best angle that they showed, and should have been the conclusive evidence they were looking for.
November 5th, 2011 at 4:30 PM ^
But the original ref who waved it dead didn't signal loss of possession. He signaled Out of Bounds, that Junior didn't have the ball before he went out, whereas the video clearly shows otherwise
November 5th, 2011 at 6:03 PM ^
Everything is reviewed when they go into replay, not just the determining factor that the play was called on. When you catch the ball in the process of falling and end up sandwiching it between the ground and your chest you'll be hard pressed to get a replay official to say that you caught it.
November 5th, 2011 at 6:10 PM ^
looking at the play from the right side of the endzone showed the ball and it was pretty clear from that angle that the ball didn't move and that the ball wasn't trapped. The other angle, the one shown in that picture was inconclusive in that regard, but the other angle was pretty conclusive and should have been enough to overturn the call.
November 5th, 2011 at 3:40 PM ^
Nice tho, not like we all didnt see it happen.
November 5th, 2011 at 3:52 PM ^
why weren't we shown multiple views of that bang-bang play? Anyother time while the audience is waiting they would while chris plays his role...hmmmm!?

November 5th, 2011 at 3:49 PM ^
i'm going to whine about both.
November 5th, 2011 at 3:56 PM ^
The 1st 3 quarters our offense looked sooooo bland and vanilla. It completely neutralized everything that makes Denard Robinson special.
But SERIOUSLY!!! Those refs sucked....
November 5th, 2011 at 5:04 PM ^
one thing stood out to me. The uptempo / 2 minute offense seemed to work pretty good. I know the coaching staff wanted to "protect" the defense at the beginning of the year by huddling on every play and slowing down the pace of the offense. Now that our defense is performing at a higher level, why not go back to the "hurry up" offense once in a while during the course of a game, as a change of pace?
November 5th, 2011 at 4:28 PM ^
piss and moan about everything. And if you don't like it, you can go ahead and piss and moan about it.
November 5th, 2011 at 3:38 PM ^
a) the officiating sucked, and lost us a chance to tie this game (not to mention the interference / pick at the end of the half)
b) the play calling ... wa happened? lost us this game
c) the team really seemed to come out flat
and
d) man I really miss Bo having a conniption when the officiating so obviously impacts the game this way. A little fire please coach.

brady made a comment at half. we'll see what he says at the presser.

November 5th, 2011 at 3:56 PM ^
will try to use big words to explain the play calling. Many will accept it.
November 5th, 2011 at 3:39 PM ^
I don't dispute that there were three PI calls not made (including one flag picked up for no apparent reason), but let's remember that on defense we allowed Coker to go for 132 yards and, outside of 2 sacks, pressured Vantolziendenhenneburg just once. On offense we failed to adjust when they started shutting down Toussaint and Denard didn't give his receivers an opportunity to catch the ball on any of his deep throws. He also failed to juke Binns out of his jock strap like he should have on several passes that were deflected. The refs were unfortunately horrible, but the team again failed to match the opponent's intensity in a road game. Hoke's got some work to do in that area.
November 5th, 2011 at 3:39 PM ^
Anyone have a picture like this one of Hemingway's catch (non-catch I guess) from the play before?
November 5th, 2011 at 3:39 PM ^
Seriously? Play calling sucked, DRob sucked and they didn't deserve this game. How hard is it? Sure, the Hemingway catch was a TD, but the ball was supposed to be a fade, not some horse crap throw to the middle of the endzone.
The slant is another horse crap call; where is the twirl route? Where is the run/pass option to the wide side of the field?
Sometimes I don't understand the play calls, the locking on of receivers and the stupid desire to make DRob a pocket QB.
November 5th, 2011 at 3:42 PM ^
but Michigan outgained Iowa on the day (not by much, but they did). Acting like Michigan was clearly outplayed and didn't deserve to win is wrong.
