Hoke Killed A Guy
There are tridents. They are supposed to be a reference to the Navy SEALs but we all know that every guy on the team is secretly thinking about this:
This is right and good. At some point there will be an animated gif of Hoke throwing a trident at Fickell. This makes it an excellent motivational device not only for the team but for the internet. Well done.
For now, here's a static image:
That is all.

Freep Reports: "Brady Hoke Accused of Murder!"
August 31st, 2011 at 11:05 AM ^
Hoke appears to be pointing with a pen in this picture. Does that count?
August 31st, 2011 at 11:06 AM ^
Significance, please?
I read the article and understand the SEALs receive one upon graduation. But we're a land locked football team. Why Tridents? Why not a hammer......or sickle?

it's chaos theory.
a butterfly flaps it's wings in Tibet which sets in motion events culminating with Hoke spearing Fickle with a trident.

Sickles are for the communists. Or for Brian Kelly to mash up kittens with.

or for farmers.

Had RR done this: lol stupid joke of a coach uses dumb thing to motivate.
Hoke does this: Interweb approves.
These are strange days my friends.

Not so strange, just back to normal... coaches do cheesy things and people don't crucify them for it.

Dudeness, a serious question:
How long to you plan on relating every single thing about Hoke to RR?
RR is gone. Even Brian has accepted that RR had to go and that he did a lot to lead to his own demise. Even if you don't agree with that last statement, it doesn't change the fact that RR is gone. From what I know about you through your posting, you were a big Michigan fan long before RR got here. So, another serious question: Are you now more of a RR fan than a Michigan fan? Because it seems that your loyalty and rooting interest are more focused on RR than on Michigan.
Not a personal attack - I generally like posts, but it seems like you are so focussed on RR that it has overtaken your Michigan fandom.
August 31st, 2011 at 2:10 PM ^
I am not Brian. I feel shortchanged. It is going to take a while. Still like the guys RR brought in and maybe by the time they are all gone I will have found a new reason to cheer for the team. Who knows? Maybe college athletics will be drastically different by then... maybe I won't even be a fan when it comes out that every school cheated... I am not sure.
August 31st, 2011 at 11:20 AM ^
I love how you're rewriting history. Do you really not remember how excited everyone was around here - myself included - early in the RR days? From Barwis porn to mocking WVU's bitterness, we were all drooling over the awesomeness we thought was ahead. That's what fans do.
August 31st, 2011 at 1:54 PM ^
Ummm...RR also did this:
August 31st, 2011 at 2:07 PM ^
pretty sure you have done a fair amount of things that didn't "work" in your lifetiime too. He was under a fair amount of stress and while uncoordinated it was sincere. Tired and cliche'
August 31st, 2011 at 2:13 PM ^
I supported RR until the end but there is no way someone can say the trident is "cheesy" when this happened. I didn't say he didn't word hard or give his all to be here -- I posted a picture.
August 31st, 2011 at 3:45 PM ^
Get the whole points thing but... don't get the whole you can snark on RR at every opportunity and if someone rebukes you it culminates in a "0" score and categorized as trolling...
apologize in advance for not being a snarky hipster poster - just been around enough to know most people are good and you shouldn't dance on graves.
and I'll be greyed - out in 3, 2, 1, ......
August 31st, 2011 at 2:05 PM ^
Are you comparing the Trident (one of the damn coolest things in the world; I personally know two Navy SEALS) to Josh Fricking Groban?
Of COURSE we approve. DUH!

but it didn't stop us from having ice axes.
Michigan landlocked - uh, let me think about that.

Yeah, Michigan is landlocked, except for that whole Lake Michigan on one side and Lake Erie on the other side thing going on.

I did appreciate the humourous jump from "Navy SEALS receive tridents upon graduation" to "WMU's QB will be dodging tridents" by the author

So, just for the record, this is NOT about chewing gum??
August 31st, 2011 at 11:39 AM ^
Little known fact, Trident Gum originally contained three enzymes thought to promote good oral health, hence tri-dent. Clearly this is a sign from Hoke that our players have a rampant caries problem.
Ok, I'll go back to studying teeth now...
August 31st, 2011 at 11:26 AM ^
So point of clarification: did the team receive a trident, like a real trident, or a maize and blue version of the Special Warfare Emblem (I think that's what it's called). From that crappy Whitlock article, he made it seem like they received an engraved real trident that represented like hree ideals that Hoke calls this teams ethos. But the Detnews made it seem like they got a pin (the Special Warfare Emblem) that SEALs get upon completion of their training. I like the trident, but may have a problem with the pin. Anybody care to elucidate?
August 31st, 2011 at 11:54 AM ^
The SEAL emblem is an anchor, with an eagle holding a trident and pistol kind of wrapped around the anchor. I just don't want a bunch of SEALs freaking out because we're using their symbol. Would be embarrassing.
August 31st, 2011 at 12:19 PM ^
That's what I thought, but my weekly cruising for schadenfreude reveled that opposing fan bases think it's the actual emblem.
August 31st, 2011 at 11:08 PM ^
"Head coach Brady Hoke recently issued each one of his players a large trident pitchfork with his name on it." - Toledo Blade
And they hung them from the ceiling. It's not any kind of pin.
August 31st, 2011 at 11:32 AM ^
I relayed this story to a Wisconsin fan at work who also was in the Air Force and he came just shy of blowing a gasket.
He basically stated that it was a ridiculous comparison and "when Hoke can run his guys through practice for 7 days & nights straight...", blah, blah, blah.
He even went so far as to compare it to RR singing Josh Grobin, saying it was just as bad only in the opposite direction, being over the top and ridiculous in its own way.
Personally, while I think it is a bit silly, I can tolerate it because the motivation and reason for doing it is pure and if it works, who am I to question it.
Just please, if a trident falls from the cieling and stabs Troy Woolfolk through the leg, I will no longer believe in a benevolent God.

If you kill a guy with a trident, especially Fickell, you'll be wanted for murder and you should probably lay low for awhile. Mattison can handle things until the heat dies down though it's all good.

piece of pride/noteworthy item of memorabilia is each SEAL's Team coin, or "RMO" .... Round Metallic Object. Each team has its own identifiable coin they carry with themselves at all times. Except on missions, I imagine...must sanitize before operations begin.

I prefer Ace's work, since the smile reminds me more of Brick's innocence:
August 31st, 2011 at 2:04 PM ^
The team has been sitting in waist-deep water since last night just north of Port Huron. They also have pre-positioned several spider holes in and around the field and we have men in there already waiting to jump out and jab Taylor Martinez in the calf during the Nebraska game. Fred Jackson is doing a HALO insertion at 19:28 zulu time on Saturday.
