1 day 17 hours ago	ALS	Lou Gehrig's disease would be worse IMHO. Becoming slowly, progressively paralyzed while completely retaining your cognition with zero hope for a cure would be really hard. I'd rather go batshit crazy and be oblivious about it I think.

1 week 4 days ago	I'm not actually advocating	I'm not actually advocating for not wearing a seat belt but it is an appropriate analogy. When I say it doesn't effect others, I mean that it doesn't put other people in physical danger (versus, say, an example of drunk driving where you are directly endangering others). Mature persons should be able to see the benefits for themselves and make the appropriate decision; if not, natural selection. You cannot force people to be smart. This is why I said I absolutely support the development and use of helmets by pitchers to prevent potential horrible head injuries that would surely have an effect on their families, etc. But I don't see why it needs to be made mandatory (for anyone above high school age - I would support making it mandatory for kids under 18).
1 week 4 days ago	This I don't understand	I understand, and support, making the OPTION of pitcher-friendly helmets available for any pitcher who would like to wear one. I fail to understand why we must get on our high horse and decide we know what is best for everyone and make rules like "you have to wear your seat belt in the car" or "you have to wear a helmet." Is it probably a good idea? Sure, most definitely. Is it going to effect anyone other than the person getting injured? Nope. So why must we make the decision for them?

In my ideal world Sammi loses his spot to Tuzzi and Tootoo replaces Tuzzi on the line below. Sometimes I feel like Babcock hates the idea of an old school grind line. I know he likes all his offense to be as to put the puck in the net, but the value of a line that goes out and plays high energy, fast, and physical - even if they don't score - helps open up the ice for everyone else.

2 weeks 6 days ago	Wings over Ducks is not	Wings over Ducks is not unlikely at all I feel like. While it may just be homerism, the Wings have been playing their best hockey of the year the past 2 weeks and Howard has been phenomenal. A hot goaltender that can steal games is almost essential for any playoff run and Howard is showing the signs of being there this year.  Contrarily the Ducks have been struggling as of late. I forgot the exact numbers but they started the year with ~20ish wins to only a handful of losses, but regressed in the last third of the season. I wouldn't be surprised if the Wings took them at all, but getting by the Hawks in the next round will be difficult.

With the athleticism and skill he has with the ball in his hands in open space and the potential to play multiple positions in an offense, all it takes is one team that really wants him to jump the gun so that they don't miss him. 10 weeks 3 days ago	As a medical student	As a medical student currently about neuropathology, I can tell you that a concussion is actually defined by having transient symptoms with NO (known) abnormalities histologically ("under the microscope").  This is in contrast to a contusion (a more severe head injury, like getting hit with a baseball bat for example) that leads to focal areas of death of brain tissue.  A general way to think of the brain is that around the outsides (closest to the skull, called "gray matter") are the neuron cell bodies, and these send long projections down towards the middle of the brain (called "axons" - and note that bundles of axons are what makes up nerves) and eventually out the spinal cord. A contusion is damage to these cell bodies leading to cell death that is able to be demonstrated.  One current hypothesis is that the transient symptoms of a concussion are due to diffuse damage to the "axons" rather than injury to the cell bodies. It is documented that "shaking baby syndrome" that most people know about causes damage like this leading to dysfunction, and there is some evidence (according to my professors but not that I have read directly) suggesting that concussions may be a form of similar damage. Regardless of the exact mechanism, I think that anyone who says that repeated head trauma (even sub-clinical, as is used in this study) does NOT, at the very least, increase the possibility of long term damage is very wrong. HOWEVER, I am not also not convinced that repeated sub-clinical trauma leads to the severity of mental illness that is being propagated in the media.

15 weeks 2 days ago	ESPN is great at self-promoting	They've already told Ray he has an open job offer when he retires - so they spin all coverage of him in a positive light and avoid anything negative. The general public already seem to love the guy (many probably are oblivious to his past transgretions) so why would they dwell on negatives when they can spit out positives/perpetuate his "self-image" of being a God-fearing, emotional leader and then use that for more profit for themselves?
