OT: RIP Bob Barker .

Submitted by rob f on August 26th, 2023 at 1:03 PM

Legendary game show host and animal advocate Bob Barker departs this earth at age 99.

Most well known as the host of The Price is Right, Bob earlier was the long-time star of game show Truth or Consequences.

One of my favorite Bob Barker moments was this:

...as he KO's Luke Fickell.

May this wonderful and (usually) gentle man rest in peace.

I never understood why the Price is Right had hot female models (I'm not complaining, mind you). Did the producers of the show think their audience contained a large number of male viewers? Were they trying to appeal to the even smaller lesbian audience?

I understand the show now has both male and female models now which makes a hell of a lot more sense, although I wonder how many women are even watching the show these days.

This saddens me deeply. As a kid, watching Bob on sick days and in the summer was priority #1 (11 AM ET). I always dreamed of being a contestant and meeting Bob but that dream never did (and never will) come true.

Oh and always remember to have your pets spayed or neutered. Good bye everybody!

RIP Bob

Sandler's description of how Bob Barker ended up in the movie:

"We… and Bob knows this. We initially wrote it for Ed McMahon. Ed McMahon said he was busy and we, we were, we were like, imagine if Bob Barker did it, he'll never do it. Next thing you know, Bob Barker, whose neighbor was Chuck Norris at the time and Chuck and Bob used to spar, was like, ‘Yeah, if I get to fight, if I get to throw punches, I'm doing it.’"

McMahon would've been good, but Barker was perfect.

RIP!

A kid that I grew up just a few houses down in East Detroit (Eastpointe), his mom got to be a contestant on Price is Right and they had a sweet new dining room table set and a lazy boy to show for it.  We were in duplexes and the kitchens were so small the table took up half of it.  If I remember right she made it to the showcase showdown and just barely lost.

I don't recall ever seeing it.  Think VCR's were just becoming a thing then.

My buddy, rest in peace, was also a UM Engineering grad, and it was summer 1994, a year, after we graduated, we went to California and stayed with his mom.. we went to the show and he was picked as contestant, and even spun the wheel.  Bob ribbed him good.  He ended up winning a bunch of prizes including these baby monitors, but then after show they said he would be eventually liable for approx. 30% of his winnings to federal and state taxes.  So he refused and didn't take any of the prizes.  I also vaguely recall they asked for the California taxes on the spot, because he wasn't a resident, but this could be wrong. At least that's what I remembered when I waited afterward for him in Studio City parking lot and when he had come out empty handed.

Cool story bro incoming...

I went to the ‘97 rose bowl NC game with a bunch of friends. It was the first time I’ve been to LA so me and another person stayed behind to check it out. Well, one thing we did is go to the Price is Right. And wouldn’t you know, my friend with me gets called up to contestants row, wins the bidding, wins the game, wins a new car, and spins the big wheel (he didn’t make it past that part).  I had the chance to meet Bob Barker after while by friend was taking care of paperwork for his winnings. Nice guy.

Like many of you I grew up watching Bob and his beauties on TPIR. I attended a tabping during Bob's last year. No I didn't get picked but I do have some interesting tidbits. The biggest thing is that the studio, stage, and size of the audience were TINY. The studio held about 100-120 people. The stage was probably 30' x 40' max with about 10' extra used for off camera things and behind the sliding doors(which was about 12 feet high.) Everything was wheeled on and off the stage and most of the game took up a big part of the stage. During the commercial breaks Bob would answer questions from the audience and also tell some stories about his years on the show. Also during these breaks they did drawings for the general audience where you could win $100. Overall it was a cool experience and Bob seemed like a nice guy even knowing some of the POS things he did to the beauties. I still can't believe that the show looks like it has such a large stage and studio when in fact is was SO small. Amazing what camera angles can do.

When I was kid, I remembered his Truth or Consequences show.. My FIL lived in Truth or Consequences, NM the year they renamed the town in honor of the TV show. Bob was the Grand Marshall of a Parade there for a decade or so. My favorite time to watch "The Price is Right" was from the mid 70s through the mid 80s. I remember seeing it on in the student union at Michigan, between classes in the early 80s. They re-run shows on Pluto TV run from the early to mid 80s. Back when Johnny Olson was the announcer and would say "come on down, so and so". As I got older and Bob's hair was all white and  I was working full time and going to grad school, I never watched much in the late 80s and 90s. I think I've only seen the Drew Carey Price is Right show once or twice.

Yeah, Bob was a legend, and probably would have been arrested for his extracurricular exploits in the modern era. But, overlooking that, his principal failure was not hiring Playboy/Penthouse/Perfect 10 model Lexie Karlsen as a permanent Barkers Beauty.
