The thinking around Detroit at the time was that the benefit would be - much less travel time. Obviously we were losing long time rivalries with St. Louis, Chicago, Colorado and gaining one in Toronto which had been dormant for years and mostly still is. If they coulda done things different they probably coulda kept Detroit in the west and put Nashville in the east. Nashville is in closer proximity to 5 or 6 teams in the east or at least the same as Detroit. That way they coulda kept 2 - O6 teams in the west instead of the Hawks being the only one.
I like the divisions in NFL & MLB. For the most part they're regional and it's best that the division winner gets a playoff spot. Also good that both leagues added a playoff team in the last several yrs. More teams in the playoffs is not a bad thing for fanbases.
