Harbaugh bringing back Bench Mason
Love to see him give love to his former players. Especially one as dedicated as this guy. I hope he earns a roster spot!
The Chargers do need help at DT, so it makes sense.
Uh...does it? I think it would make more sense if the Chargers needed help at FB.
EDIT: Yeah, I missed the obvious joke here and I'll take my L.
oh wow.
Hahahaha my man didn’t get that joke I see
How do you miss that one? He has been a member since early 2019.
The infamous Wisconsin game where Bench Mason and Jordan Glasgow both played DT was on September 21, 2019.
And neither one lined up in the A-Gap on 4th and goal from inside the 1...
Wooooosh
That's awesome.
Also, it now frees up their first round pick since they have a fullback.
Underrated comment!
Which actually brings to mind a question--what NFL positions have NEVER had a first round draft pick? I have no idea, but can guess at three:
1. Fullback
2. Long Snapper
3. Bears' Pro Bowl QB
Admittedly I had to look it up, but a fullback was drafted in the first round as recently as 1994 (William Floyd).
I would imagine that a lot of FBs were taken in the 1st round pre-1990.
#3 - you are forgetting about Jim MF Harbaugh (and Jim McMahon)
Harbaugh went to the Pro Bowl with the Colts though.
Jim McMahon, yes.
Got me on a technicality :) - it was still a good opportunity to mention that Harbaugh went to a Pro Bowl.
Not only did he go to a Pro Bowl, every so often you see those clips of their skills competition resurface. Jim looks like he's having a blast.
This was a fun way to realize the Jets drafted a person named Roger Vick (no relation) as a 1st round fullback in 1987 with several Pro Bowlers (Harbaugh among them) still available.
What a franchise, when this doesn't even register as a first-round blunder.
Jim Brown, Larry Csonka, and Franco Harris were all drafted in the first round as fullbacks.
Don't forget this magnificent motherfucker. FB 6th overall.
The wikipedia entry on that draft lists Riggins as a "RB" but I know that's not necessarily an accurate description of how he was regarded when he was drafted.
I would normally call Riggins a fullback as well, but the old-school definition of a fullback was the guy who would line up closer to the LOS than the halfback, and was frequently a blocker for the halfback.
At Kansas, Riggins was frequently lined up in a standard fullback spot, but he was hardly the stereotype lumbering FB—he was a state champion sprinter in high school, and he broke Gale Sayers's career rushing record at Kansas.
In the pro highlights of Riggins I've watched, he sometimes has a lead blocker in front of him, but the highlights never show the formation before the snap so it's hard to see whether he was lined up in the classic formation in front of the halfback or not. In many of the other highlights I've watched, he doesn't appear to have anybody blocking for him other than linemen or maybe a TE.
You're right that "fullback" now is much different from "fullback" in the period where the college game was dominated by triple option/wishbone offenses. Of course the FB blocked in those, but they would also get a fair number of carries per game. I could argue that a feature power back of the modern game (say, Marshawn Lynch) would be a fullback in most 1970 college offenses, and get 1000 yards a la Lytle.
Never understood why the fullback lines up between the quarterback and the half back.
mike alstott was drafted in the second round, but with the 35th pick, so he wasn't far off the first round.
Alstott was so good he made Jim Coletto look like a good offensive coach at Purdue.
Jarrod Bunch, my favorite fullback, was selected by the New York Giants in the first round (27th overall pick) of the 1991 NFL draft.
SD is going to be a destination team for real football players who want to go play real football.
so a buckeye free zone
That's great, I'm just curious what team they'll be playing for in SD.
you mean LA? because football players real or fake arent doing much in SD
Brady Hoke is clapping at this comment right now. Furiously clapping.
Was going to downvote this comment (just for the insinuation that other football players are playing "fake" football), but then I realized this comment is so Harbaugh - that this may legitimately be his MgoBurner. Carry on my good man, and have an upvote instead.
Although JH should know if he's in SD or LA...
The old Qualcomm site is about as close to SoFi as Ford Field is to Browns Stadium.
Difference is you could easily drive from Detroit to Cleveland in less time.
South Dakota has a pro team?
The El Segundo Chargers just doesn't have that same ring to it.
SMASH
Love that he is still playing. I was thinking it was going to be some sort of an analyst job!
I really need Mason to stick on the roster and do something noteworthy this season. The world needs a Ben Mason press conference.
Trying to become the other Champions of the West.
I think this is my lifetime of NFL-drafted Michigan fullbacks - Jarod Bunch - first round; Ed Shuttlesworth - second round; Rob Lytle - second round; Leroy Hoard - second round; Stanley Edwards - third round; Bob Perryman - third round; Chris Floyd - third round; BJ Askew - third round; Russell Davis - fourth round; Bench Mason - fifth round; Gerald White - undrafted.
He knows how to build the right culture and Ben would (and has damn near literally) run through walls for Jim. That stuff is contagious. He doesn’t have to actually play.
