Presser Notes 8/8

-Hoke can see Matt Wile handling both kicking and punting
-Stonum is practicing
-Says Stonum's redshirt won't change the target of 26 member class
-Woolfolk is at "full speed"
-Kickers are going to practice in the Big House. Different experience than simply staying in practice facility
-Hoke says we need to rely on 1)Power run, 2)Set pass up from there, and 3) the 2 min offense
-Practice intensity was good
-Hoke says he has a "strict manner" in discipline
-Molk says less yelling than there was under RR
-Molk says offense is running smooth
-Woolfolk says Campbell is moving faster and looks more athletic
-Woolfolk says he himself is faster and more focussed on mechanics
-Van Bergen now weighs 290. Says he's on a 6-7,000 cal diet. Was 4-5000 under RR
Those damn slimy bastards. There must've been improper benefits during that Triwizard Tournament. I mean, they had two competitors!
It appears that He Who Shall Not Be Named named names.
Kinda OT but I don't think this deserves it's own thread, and I couldn't make one anyway. On CFL they have Rittenberg on the phone about Stonum... he basically says we have pretty good depth but losing your number two reciever is going to hurt no matter what. Wow, that's insightful.
Then says that while some may be thinking that Hoke is coming down harder on players than Rich, it's not entirely true and things should be taken on a case-by-case basis. He mentioned Feagin as an example of Rich Rod disiplining.
At the end he said it was a good response by Hoke to show he isn't afraid of penalizing his players and that it in addition establishs a basis for disiplinary action early in his tenure.
AKA, nothing that big, but it's always fun to see them talking about Michigan on CFL.
You're right, it doesn't sound like anything new, but there was a little bit of good insight there. I agree about the depth: losing a solid WR is never good, but at least it's at one of our deeper positions.
- I wonder if updated roster weights will be published soon? I sems to recall RR allowing them to be released soon after Fall Camp started last year.
- Sort of surprised that RVB only added 7 pounds with the huge increase in calories. Of course, these guys have eating AND exercise regimens the rest of us can't even relate to. (Well, at least the exercise part!)
They put me on a 12,000 calorie diet as a freshman at ball state. For breakfast I had a dozen hard boiled eggs, every day. I only ate the yolk in 3-4 of them, but usally I'd have those eggs and then a normal breakfast of pancakes, french toast, sausage, bacon, and scrambled eggs.
Gag...
12000 calories a day takes all the fun out of overeating. Trying to come up with enough loose change to buy 5 Taco Bell quesadillas each night to get the last few thousand calories had to be stressful.
I've been F5ing the mgoblue roster all day, so I hope they post them soon.
Re: RVB's weight, it was also reported that he looks slimmer despite adding the weight, so it's possible he added 15lbs of good weight and lost 8lbs of fat. For a 6'6" guy to look noticeably slimmer, he'd have to lose a decent amount of bad weight.
...should ask about that:
Spath_Wolverine Michigan's roster will be updated with new weights Tuesday.
Right now, that is the thing that I am looking forward to the most... Man, what a D-Line! I thought BWC would only cut 20 or something like that... but 30? Damn. Also, it will be awesome to see in numbers how much the skill position players built and how big the LBs are now. I am so glad we are not going to be undersized anymore. (Also, don't forget Hopkins who may be down to 225)
I have a 2nd hand story (my brother plays baseball with Craig's cousin), but I found it really interesting. Craig is on a very similar diet to Ryan and he has to weigh in every week with a set weight that he is supposed to get to each time. Basically, if he doesn't achieve the designated weight gain he has to wear an Ohio State shirt around, I can't remember what the shirt says, but it's clearly a shirt designed to incense Roh. Thought this was an interesting tactic to help him gain weight and I don't know how many players they are using this method on for motivation.
That's a great story, and it sounds like a tactic that would work pretty well.
an "Ohio" shirt my friend.
We all make mistakes, here is a picture of Hoke pointing at me telling me to not let it happen again.
Totally redeemed yourself!
Yeah, we just call them Ohio now.
Yeah we just call them Ohio now. Where have you been? lol
Yeah we just call them Ohio now. Where have you been? lol
It's Ohio State, OSU, O State, whatever. It one thing if there was no Ohio University, but there is.
Eh. He doesn't call them "Ohio University". He calls them "Ohio". Everybody calls MSU "State" even though there are lots of other schools that also go by "State". I'm fine with it.
- Van Bergen said he and Roh both put on 10-15 pounds. Said it'll help play Mattison's scheme
- Woolfolk on racing Denard: "Any time."
- Molk on leaders: "Seniors. The whole class."
- Molk, a 5th yr Sr "For me, this is it."
- Molk said difference in summer was everyone did everything together.
RR didn't have the kickers practice in the stadium? Seems like a pretty basic idea and seeing as how he tried everything else, you think he would have done that.
We ought to look into firing that guy.

Comment of the year.
he did or didn't do that.
so when we got barwis we talked about how much better our players looked and how much weight they gained/lost and how they were gonna be the the most in-shape team in the nation. now we have a new strength coach and we are talking how much better our players look and how much weight they gained/lost and how they are going to be the most in-shape team in the nation. i just think its funny, hope we are as in-shape as possible regardless of the strength coach
Yes it really all means nothing. Every team in the country is saying the same things right now. Player A lost 20lbs, he will be so much faster and more athletic!!!!!!! Player B has gained 15lbs, he is going to be a force and absolute beast this season!!!!!
this is all the fun we have until football season. dont ruin it!
Is wrong with these pants I've got on? Must have shrunk in the dryer.
...Daily writer Stephen J. Nesbitt's tweets:
- Woolfolk: "Most coaches use college as a stepping stone for somewhere else. For coach Hoke, this is his final stone."
- Troy Woolfolk: "I'm faster than I was, no doubt." He credits that to focusing on the mechanics of running.
- Woolfolk: "If anything happens, it'll be to my other ankle, because I've got reinforced steel in this (previously injured) ankle."
- David Molk on @hellrell99's tattoo of a Spartan crushing a wolverine: "I don't know who would get a tattoo ... it stings your body."
- Hoke: "If you see us (practice) in no pads, you'd think we were in pads because we practice so fast."
- Hoke: "We want a championship culture here." He says he's more strict in discipline than others.
- Hoke: "I'm a hard guy to please, because I want everything to be the best."
- Hoke will not elaborate on Darryl Stonum's redshirt decision.
- Hoke: freshmen were "wide-eyed and wondering" in their first day of practice.
- Hoke said it's "fun" to be around Denard.
- Hoke: "We're pretty doggone healthy."
If true thats a great story about Roh.
...everyone's favorite, Mark Snyder's tweets:
- Woolfolk: this staff gives constructive criticism, explains what is wrong
- Woolfolk: Will tell Stonum same things his father told him when he had to sit out last year about staying focused
- Troy Woolfolk: (Traditional Michigan feeling) "it's coming back"
- Molk on tighter sr class: "(Hoke) gives us more power... The influence we have on some of his select decisions."
I saw BWC in, of all places, my hometown in the Upper Penninsula for Bessemer's (a small town) 4th of July celebration. Turns out he is good friends with a young lady from Bessemer whom I also know. I spoke with him briefly and he was very friendly and extremely polite, even with some drunk ass Iowa fans giving him shit.
Not a great story, but I wanted to let people know that he really represents Michigan football well.
I see BWC at the CCRB every once in a while playing basketball and is always really nice and funny. Same thing with Chris Barnett both really nice and friendly guys.
I've been to Bessemer a few times. As you surely know, it has an interesting history:

What on earth were Iowans doing way up there?
Also, I'll bet BWC looked like a reindeer in Harlem.

....Speedboys! I hope Big Will got some Yooper love from Speedboy Nation.
I've got a close friend whose family is from Bessemer. He goes back up there at least once a year.
It's fun to picture Big Will up there with the Yoopers.
Good free article by Spath on this stuff:
This team is going to be special. Forget about weight gain and weight loss. Just listen to how they talk about each other, how much accountability there is, how they all get along, how they want it for Michigan.
2 more, probably 1 games suspensions coming according to Balas..No other details
Son of a trick!
Supposedly one is Hopkins.
NEED Countdown to Kickoff Video. Come on!!!!
are they posting it tonight?
...that Days 27 (Sunday) and 26 (today) would be posted in the evening. I'm guessing that Day 25 (Tuesday) will be posted in the morning.

...presser quotes from Hoke and the players.
RVB:
On the defensive line's goal for pressuring the quarterback ... "I would definitely anticipate that we put more pressure on the quarterback and get more takedowns. I think we had some good pressure on the quarterback last year, but the amount of takedowns we had when we got there wasn't cutting it. I don't know where we were in the Big Ten but we want to lead the Big Ten (in that statistic), and that's something we've talked about. We have a veteran group. There is no reason that we can't make a push for the best in the Big Ten and the best in the country as far as takedowns. Coach Mattison emphasizes that we're going to get after the quarterback and make them make quicker decisions."
On his hunger to succeed this season ... "I feel an obligation to my seniors, to the guys who have been here since 2007 with Coach Carr. We've been through a lot as a class and it's unique to our class as far as the three coaches and four defensive coordinators. For the sake of the guys that I've been with I just want to have a successful season. I want these guys to be remembered as guys who came in and helped aid the transition for Coach Hoke and turn Michigan back around, put it in the graces that it used to be. If we can do that I feel like our senior class would feel like we were successful. That's something I'm fully committed to doing and I know the other seniors are fully committed to doing. That's why we had such great senior leadership this offseason."
Molk:
On the continuity of the offensive line ... "It's good because I know the guys on the line and we've been together for a long time. We know how each other play, we know each other work, we know how to work together. It can be only positive."
On how the summer benefited the team ... "It was good. We didn't only work hard, which we've always done, we've always been a hard-working team, but we all worked hard together. It was something where we all came together. We were one as a team and we made strides as a team. Now everyone is a group. There are no outliers, we are just one."

The Mgoblue video seems to be non-browser-crippling today

Also, I don't think I really like this -- at least not unless the O-Line puts on a ton more weight
"
-Hoke says we need to rely on 1)Power run, 2)Set pass up from there, and 3) the 2 min offense"
