When will we hire a new LB Coach?
Haven’t seen any buzz about it, but has anyone else?
I assume Rick Minter won’t be the permanent hire seeing as how he’s more or less in the Monte working for Lane stage of his career.
November 27th, 2023 at 5:20 PM ^
It probably won't be Minter, but we could do a LOT worse than Rick Minter, who we're fortunate to have had ready and available the rest of the year.
I trust Harbaugh and Jesse Minter to vet and find someone legit.
November 27th, 2023 at 5:32 PM ^
There is a whole coaching carousel that started over the weekend - it will likely impact our staff.
We are a few weeks away from coordinators and assistant coaches getting hired by the new heac coaches for their staffs around the country.
There will also be assistants from the olds staffs getting let go. Our new coach(es) will either come from promotion or picking someone up from the scrap heap.
November 27th, 2023 at 7:06 PM ^
Eh, Michigan pays well enough that they could also hire someone already employed as a LB coach. As long as R Minter is working out, there's no real reason to make a move before the season's over.
November 27th, 2023 at 11:10 PM ^
Oh yeah. To be clear, it doesn’t worry me. But I am curious because it’s an atypical situation and I’m betting the job WILL generate major interest, but at the same time we’ll still be preparing to play meaningful football during the peak time for new coaching hires.
November 28th, 2023 at 1:22 AM ^
I think James Ross may be ready. He's had successful stints at Hope, Cincinnati and is currently at Tulane doing a great job. He's a former LB at Michigan, knows and understands the culture, he has character, great integrity, from the Detroit area and bleeds Maize and Blue. They should give him a shot.
November 29th, 2023 at 1:57 PM ^
Roy Manning at USC another name.
November 27th, 2023 at 5:20 PM ^
I don't know, but I hope they don't stop preparation for the B1G Championship game to do so. Or recruiting, don't stop that. Or stealing the signs of Georgia, FSU, Oregon, Washington, and Bama. Don't stop that. Or, like, 100 other things that I would imagine are higher on the list of priorities than a new LB coach right now... ;-)
November 28th, 2023 at 2:24 AM ^
Steal all the signs
November 27th, 2023 at 5:21 PM ^
There will be no replacement. The B1G plan is to slowly eliminate all coaches at Michigan.
November 27th, 2023 at 5:24 PM ^
Sherrone can handle it.
November 27th, 2023 at 5:25 PM ^
When Jim & John meet for their annual holiday coach exchange.
November 28th, 2023 at 10:38 AM ^
If they are exchanging, I hope John gets Partridge and no others.
November 27th, 2023 at 5:27 PM ^
Wait til shit blows over and hire Partridge again.
November 27th, 2023 at 6:50 PM ^
Unfortunately, he will most likely NEVER work at Michigan again.
November 28th, 2023 at 2:28 AM ^
Just needs a hat, sunglasses and some facial hair.
.
November 28th, 2023 at 5:34 AM ^
Piss Cartridge 2024!
November 27th, 2023 at 5:28 PM ^
Michael Barrett player coach would be my best guess.
November 27th, 2023 at 5:54 PM ^
The Michael and Mikey Barrett linebacker coach for Michigan: Michael Barrett
November 27th, 2023 at 6:01 PM ^
Similarly, as soon as Mike Sainristil hangs up his cleats, he should be on the Michigan sidelines coaching. The man gets it.
November 27th, 2023 at 6:51 PM ^
Ok so let's make you guys into villains
November 27th, 2023 at 5:28 PM ^
Didn't you hear? Michael Barrett is already the new LB coach.
November 27th, 2023 at 6:59 PM ^
In a heartbeat!!!
November 27th, 2023 at 5:30 PM ^
We already have the future coach on the team. Just make Barrett player-coach.
Edit: I thought I was pretty clever. But I am so slow. LOL.
November 27th, 2023 at 6:23 PM ^
I came to make the same joke and am significantly late to the game as well.
November 27th, 2023 at 5:41 PM ^
If they want to go the ex player front, Roy Manning has been out west for while now, as he's been pretty attached to Alex Grinch since they were at WSU together, aside from Grinch's brief tenure at Ohio State and Manning went to UCLA. But being attached to Alex Grinch's defenses at OU and USC wouldn't be the best selling point.
Mike McCray has been with DB at UMass the last couple of years as well.
November 27th, 2023 at 5:42 PM ^
Do the hilarious thing and hire Tom Allen
November 27th, 2023 at 11:17 PM ^
He’s a scum bag. No thanks.
November 27th, 2023 at 5:42 PM ^
Just hire a Ross brother. Any one.
November 27th, 2023 at 5:51 PM ^
James would actually be a really good hire, currently at Tulane after being a DC at Hope.
November 27th, 2023 at 5:45 PM ^
I would assume sometime in January
November 27th, 2023 at 5:51 PM ^
How about they give Partridge his job back and go look for a new AD instead?
November 28th, 2023 at 10:39 AM ^
Signing on.
November 27th, 2023 at 6:05 PM ^
They'll find someone, likely an ace recruiter. I also assume they'll be replacing the OC this year because someone is going to go after Moore and he'd be foolish not to take a good option if one was given to him.
But Harbaugh has done a great job picking assistants and I trust he'll do so again.
November 27th, 2023 at 6:14 PM ^
Sherrone is reportedly being described to recruits as the successor in waiting, as an answer to the "what happens if Harbaugh goes to the NFL / is shot into space by the NCAA" questions.
November 27th, 2023 at 6:22 PM ^
In due time
November 27th, 2023 at 6:36 PM ^
lol. wtf you gonna do at this point? You can't do any better than what they did for the rest of season.
November 27th, 2023 at 6:59 PM ^
If only there were an NFL team coached by a known friend and trusted ally that ran a very similar defensive scheme. Then we could pull a LB coach from that organization….
November 27th, 2023 at 7:48 PM ^
His strength is recruiting. Just pray he doesn't go to a rival.
November 27th, 2023 at 7:18 PM ^
We're going to need a lot more than a new LB coach by the time this is all said and done. Harbaugh himself said he has 4 ready for head coaching positions now and other ready for coordinator duties. My guess is Moore is gone. Newsome will slide over to the OL with either Jay and/or Hart coordinating the offense. We'll need to hire LB, safeties, and TE coaches. Jay can probably coach TE's but my guess is he won't if he keeps special teams coordinator duties. Hart will keep RB's unless a dynamic recruiter becomes available. It's going to be a wild ride on the carousel this off season and I'm here for it.
November 27th, 2023 at 7:56 PM ^
I might agree with you on Sherrone, except that the sheer emotions of the last few months are likely to have him too bonded with these players to leave in the short term. Plus, the unfolding of events have made him the clear heir in waiting to our head coaching position. Given the money he is making, I wouldn't be surprised if he hung around quite a bit longer.
November 27th, 2023 at 8:10 PM ^
agree. and UM is in this thing this year til the end, hopefully. most new hires are done well before new years.
November 27th, 2023 at 8:07 PM ^
Kirk Campbell would be the OC/QB coach..he has already been an OC so he would slide perfectly into that position--plus the QBs love him
Btw, anyone hear any feedback on all the recruits we had at the game? I know only 2 days later but sometimes people hear stuff..supposedly Underwood was going to show up
November 27th, 2023 at 8:37 PM ^
I honestly can't imagine, given the precedent of the Bowdens, Kiffins (in reverse), Paternos, and now Ferentzes, that Jay would probably ever get a coordinator job here.
November 27th, 2023 at 10:55 PM ^
Yes, those family connections never work out. Just ask the Minter family, the Stoops family and, well yes, the Harbaugh family.
November 28th, 2023 at 9:30 AM ^
Did it work out for the Stoopses? Once Mike got fired at Arizona, Bob pushed Brent Venables out to hire him as DC. Then Riley let Mike go, while Venables became top 3 DC in the sport. There just is something different about a coordinator title, especially for sons, when things go wrong fans get especially angry
November 27th, 2023 at 7:52 PM ^
Probably a few weeks after the season is over.
November 27th, 2023 at 8:14 PM ^
About 10 days after we win the National Championship game.
November 27th, 2023 at 8:16 PM ^
We have already found him. He just plays for us. His name is Michael Barrett.
November 27th, 2023 at 8:36 PM ^
I liked Christian Robinson. He was in the mix two LB coaching searches ago before Florida hired Billy Napier.
Now he's at Baylor. But he'd be a great fit for our staff.
Roy Manning would be the ultimate hire. With Grinch getting fired and his new connections to the west coast, that would be a fantastic hire!
