Way OT: Anyone else smell smoke?
There is a hint of a smoky smell in my environs. Anyone else experiencing a similar sensation?
"Canada, why do we let you be a country?" -- Barney Stinson
I would be curious how far south the smoke is going. I could survey the news sources, but this blog tends to be more reliable.

? Most of the "news" on this blog is regurgitated from news sources.
lol this is a pretty weird statement. I didn't know the board here was known as a hub for independent journos to place their reliable reporting.
I think more accurately it should have probably been written "I could survey the news sources, but I'm kinda feeling lazy and this seems easier."
Put the little man to work for you OP, respect. :)
"I could survey the news sources, but I'm kinda feeling lazy and this seems easier."
Obviously, it's all over the news and I've read the stories. Posting here actual takes a modicum of increased effort. But actual anecdotes really are better. Like the BBC always asking whether a reader is in the area, and, if so, please share.
A smell of smoke has been apparent outdoors in Ann Arbor today and for the past several days. And, it's not "The Barbeque" (usually end of July?) or the Zingerman's Roadhouse smoker. Have been working outdoors wearing an N95, after experiencing major lung irritation several days ago. Have never experienced this before.
Recommendation for no one in particular: Get one of these.

I got one of the inexpensive ones ($15 or so plus a couple of "bayonet" P100 filters) during the early days of the pandemic when there was a chance I'd be yanked back to the office. This was well before the vaccines appeared and I would've been muzzled all day with something.
Haven't used it much since. It's way more comfortable than an N95/KN95.
Here is a news source with a nice map:

I totally agree with the op. I tell my wife all the time, "I don't watch the news, if it's important, it'll show up on mgo."
I live in the Chicago area, and though it's been overcast the past few days - we haven't experienced the haze or smoke - that other parts of the country have.
Today, the skies are crystal blue - and seem to be approaching "CAVU" conditions - Ceiling and Visibility Unlimited.
Same here in Muskegon. A little hazy but blue skies.
I don't know if it's because of the wildfire smoke, but I have appreciated the cooler weather the last few days. (Chicago NW suburbs)
Yep. Visibility is way down from normal too. This is coming from Hemlock, MI.
Wonder what it's like in Hell, Michigan? Probably smoky there.
We always had a Men's Glee Club retreat in Hell, MI. My freshman year, they started off explaining the retreat by telling us "We're taking you to HELL"
Scared me a little.
Logged in to upvote your screen name, Pastor. Into The Pantheon it goes...!
Hey neighbor
"There is a hint of a smoky smell in my environs."
Help us out—where are your environs?
Livonia, MI. But I just flew in last night from Florida. Hadn't paid much attention until today.
your arms must be tired
This should scare you: wild fire smoke gets more toxic as it's exposed to the sun!
Thanks for cheering us up
He's great at parties.
You can check air quality maps. It mostly headed straight south and is killing the eastern NY, eastern PA, NYC, and Philly areas
I love the smoky smell of charred bucknuts.
Smells like victory
Reminds me of a X-mas song: "......Bucknuts roasting over an open fire...."
"I can see for miles and miles" - The Who
"I was pretty sure there was a stoplight at the end of the street last week" - Me
news sources aren't what they once were.... but getting news from a blog might be more dangerous than trying to run a 5k after eating taco bell with a DQ Blizzard for dessert.
I feel for Canada, they certainly didn't burn over 10 million acres of their forest intentionally.
Smell smoke? In NYC we've been tasting smoke. It's been yellow, almost maize, outside my window since Tuesday.
As an ex-forest fire fighter, I can't help feel if this is payback from forest fires.
My daughter lives in NYC and said it felt apocalyptic on Wednesday and smelled like a campfire.
Absolutely. Even fighting forest fires, I've never seen any smoke that dense and yellow.
Your daughter: UM (?) and NYC! Good for her. I hope, other than the apparent apocalypse, she's doing well. And that you get to see her regularly.
Which is wild. I'm in Toronto and it's mostly just been hazy.
Hey, Canada! Keep your own smoke.
I smell sex and candy
Whiskey bottles and brand new cars
Oak tree, you're in my way
There's too much coke and too much smoke
Look what's going on inside you
Ooh, that smell
Can't you smell that smell?
Ooh, that smell
The smell of death surrounds you
Smells like teen spirit.
Southern NH: until it started raining yesterday, the air even tasted bad.
Son residing in NYC was shut in for two days due to the "dangerous" air quality ratings. NYC area MLB games canceled, major airports with ground stops.
It was pretty bad on Wednesday here in SE Mich.
i smell burnt toast
You're either having a stroke or overcooking your toast.
Beautiful day in SE Michigan. I just took a walk and I didn't smell any smoke.
Have you been living under a rock for the past week?
I live about 50 miles southwest of Washington DC. Wednesday was the worst day. Yellowish haze and the smell of smoke. It cleared up a bit yesterday.
I love anecdotal accounts. They're so much more, uh, personal...
I'm about 47 miles northeast of RGard. For me, Thursday was a bit worse than Wednesday. My office building is only 8 stories tall, but from 1/2 mile away the yellowish grey haze haze made the upper few floors of the building seem quite hazy. It did smell like the smoke from bruning wood, but with a bit of a biting, acrid , almost chemical tone mixed in. Today things are signficantly better.
Its been pretty bad in Virginia all week - today is the first sign of relief. Kids had raspy throats and runny noses a bit... definitely felt it.
Hopefully gone by tmrw.
We got it here from the Calgary fires a couple weeks ago too. crazy.
And just think, that smoke is the best thing to ever come from that vacuous, cultureless food desert of a city.
Calgary is not worth visiting.
It was really hazy here in KY this week, but I havent smelled any smoke. Some orange sunsets that were because of the smoke though.
It's been a bit hazy the last few days in A2. Some people are wearing masks outside but I did a short vigorous bike ride yesterday and experienced no breathing difficulties. Haven't smelled any smoke at all. Today the skies are a light hazy blue.
“No breathing difficulties”….says the guy that is nothing but bones.
Lungs just get in the way.
Reminds me of a joke...
A skeleton walks into a bar and the server comes over and says, "what can I get for ya?". The skeleton thinks for a minute and says, "I'll have a coke. And a mop".
