Stanley Cup Champs

We have a new one.  Entertaining hockey, but the Bolts lost it mentally with the perceived blown calls in the series.  Clearly, they aren't the same without Stevie Y.

Can't wait to renew the rivalry.  Check out the E: 60, Unrivaled, worth it.

Who woulda thought that there may be Redwings fans on a Michigan sports blog. Fuck the Avs. And anyone who was invested in the Wings in the late 90s will say the same thing. Even though I don't really see it being a rivalry anymore, fuck them again. As much as I didn't want to see Tampa 3-peat. It woulda been better then Colorado winning.

After some lean years sportswise for me it all has started to turn around.  Since January 2021:

Elite 8 (mens basketball)

B1G championship (mens basketball)

Sweet 16 (womens basketball, 1st ever)

Sweet 16 (mens basketball)

Elite 8 (womens basketball, 1st ever)

Afc east champions (2 in a row)

World Series Championship

Win over OSU (football)

B1G championship (football)

And now a Stanley Cup Championship...

By the way, I'm not trying to insinuate that there weren't teams doing well.  I know the mens team has been doing well for a while as well as the football team.  Just to have all of these teams do well at once is really reminding me of my "glory years" in the 90s.

Was not born into a sports loving family.  Michigan was the only team I was born into and that came just from my mom.   Dad was never a sports fan.  Came about these teams on my own when I had the erratic (bandwagon) brain of a middle schooler (as mentioned above).

Every time Colorado has won the Cup, the Red Wings have won the Cup the following season.

That fact is all I got —- hate Colorado but I do have that fact.

Sorry, but I don't buy this whole "They aren't the same without Stevie Y" crap. If it was all mental weakness as you are implying, they would've fallen apart in Game 5 and lost then. But they went into Colorado down 3-1 and handed them their first home loss of the playoffs. They never trailed that game. A mentally weak team doesn't do that.

The Lightning lost because the Avs were simply the better team. There's no shame in that. But the Lightning won two Stanley Cups without Steve Yzerman even being in the building. Yes, he built a big part of that team. Absolutely true. But they proved that they do not need Yzerman within their organization to be capable of winning Stanley Cups. The Lightning have one of the best head coaches in the game, and they have been masters the last few years at picking up key pieces at the trade deadline that help them win down the stretch.

If they weren't ever going to be the same without Yzerman, they would've started falling apart the minute he left the organization. Which no one would've been surprised for since Yzerman left pretty much right after that debacle with getting swept by the Blue Jackets a few years ago.

Yzerman deserves a lot of credit for what he built in Tampa, and I'm sure the Lightning would still love to have him, but they do not need him to win Stanley Cups. They certainly didn't the last two years when he wasn't even part of the organization and they ran roughshod through the playoffs.

I suppose that was the price of being as good and deep as they were the last few years, but also working with a salary cap. Eventually other teams are going to come calling for the guys you haven't deemed irreplaceable (Stamkos, Kucherov, Vasy, Hedman, etc.), and you don't have enough money to pay everyone. Guess they just had to make a choice about who was going to sting the least to lose.

Considering their choices got them back to the Finals for a third straight year, I'm guessing they've decided they can live with what they chose.

Will be curious how that unfolds in Colorado as well. Not sure how many of their guys are coming into contract years or are near one, but everyone on that team is in line for a raise when it comes contract time. Especially if they contend and even repeat next year, their guys are going to command that much higher of salaries on the open market, and Colorado (likely) won't be able to keep them all together.

As a Michigan hockey fan, I am envious that those bastards in Denver got a college title and the stanley cup in the same year. I suppose Detroit got to enjoy the same in '98

Happy the Avs won though since I didn't have a dog in this fight. Just wanted the team with 3 Michigan guys to beat the team with 0

I like it that 3 UM hokey players Avs but I remember how they cheap shot the Wings in the 90s. Still  hoping that Stevie Y. can turn around the Wings to be Stanley Cup contenders in the near future.

Nothing to do with bad calls as missed and bad calls went both directions. Avalanche are the best team in the NHL this year and deserve to be Stanley Cup champions. Looking forward to seeing the cup around Denver. Go Avs

As always in these threads -- I'll never root for the Avs, not ever, not even in 30 years. This is perhaps the one instance where I don't care about Michigan players on a pro team. Fuck the Avs.

I watched 'unrivaled' last night and it was refreshing to see the players from both teams in the 90s discuss the rivalry. I was conditioned to be an Avs hater back then, but I cant help but be impressed by Sakic and what he's done as the understated hero Captain to bring the team back to prominence - similar to the current path our own Captain is on. And no hockey player is more dynamic and instantly impactful as Nathan McKinnon.

Regardless I'll always cheer against the Avs. I cant believe Claude Lemieux is Seiders agent.
