Saturday morning football games: good or bad?

Submitted by crg on

I just had a chance to look over the list of televised games going on this weekend and saw that they're doing another game from Ireland (Georgia Tech vs BC) which airs at 7:30am Saturday morning.  Personally, I love being able to catch meaningful college football from (almost) dawn to (well after) dusk on a holiday weekend.  However, this also could be very inconvenient for those up late Friday or those traveling in the morning.  So, two part question for the board:  1) Are early Saturday games a good thing?  2) If UM considers doing this at some point, would you support it?

I'll be honest...morning football is a big reason why I want to move to the west coast...I currently reside in Ohio, so it couldn't possibly be any worse

So...you want to move across the country, to a much more expensive place to live, just so you can...watch...football...earlier? Kind of??? I don't think you need any extra incentive to get out of Ohio, but your "big reason"to make a major life change is...weird.

Football ANYTIME is a good thing. Early morning, Noon, afternoon, nighttime it's all good man.

Football anytime is great! I am on west coast so I love waking up and starting a fall Saturday off with football. Though if Michigan and east coast time schools start playing in the am, I probably would have to be up at 5-6am to start drinking haha

Can you imagine waking up at 6am only to see your team get pasted by like 40 points?  This is the first time I feel sorry for the people of Hawaii!

with kids in fall sports from now through eternity... my Saturdays are fubar.   Night games will probably be the safest bet for my personal viewing enjoyment.

I have been in Vegas before when games are starting at noon in A.A.  Starting the morning off with a fuzzy navel, bagel, and a parlay slip is fairly relaxing.

I used to go to sleep between 3 and 6 am...Now that I am a "grown up" I am usually in bed before midnight . I was up at 6:30 this morning . So knowing ther will be early football this Saturday works for me .

First college games at 7am on Saturday, to the beach in the afternoon.  The west coast was a bit further over time zone-wise, but OK too.  Germany?  "Morning" games obviously shifted to the right and it was strange to see afternoon games end in the evening: games like Monday Night Football were out of the question.  I did see a few Michigan games from Afghanistan in the prime 1-4am time block though!

Loved that about wathcing games when living on the west coast or visiting Hawaii.

Over here in Asia (13 or 14 hours ahead), the games that are most problematic are the Noon kickoffs, which means around 1 or 2 AM on Sunday mornings...around deal closing time if you are out and the beer googles are on. Talk about dilemas and sacrifices!

Stay up...put in a nap? (missed the first half of quite a few games that way)

If the noon games are skippable, a bit of sleep and the late afternoon games and night games are great.

Start with a Bloody Mary or something in the Orange Juice or coffee, and we are off and running. Most games are done before the SO and friends (who can never comprehend this weird obesession you have for college football) can even start to complain, and still time for short nap and make it to an afternoon game or BBQ or something.

Actually, I wonder why the MAC hasn't jumped on something like Saturday 10 AM start games.

I'd much rather watch live action than Game Day with the same half hour of previews repeatedly. They could get a decent audience, and the networks would be able to use it to plug their games later in the day.

Anything before noon is too early.  I don't envy the Big Ten schools in the Central time zone that have to put up with 11:00 a.m. local kickoffs.  Thank goodness we're in the Eastern time zone.

I would have missed Michigan game if it started at 7:30AM which is way too early for a football game to start. I don't mind noon games as I'm up at 11AM.

I don't mind noon games or earlier as long as they're games against non-marquee opponents, like a Ball State, EMU, Purdue or Rutgers. As far as early morning games, like 7-8:30, would I personally mind? No. I'd love to roll out of bed, turn on the TV and start my day with some UM Football. I'm much more of a morning person now than I was 4-5 years ago.

But many of the students would absolutely despise it, and unless it was the MSU/OSU game, you'd see a lotttttt of empty seats at the stadium. I would've hated it when I was a student too.

7:30 AM on the east coast is 12:30 PM in Dublin.   Just like 10:00 PM on the east coast is 12:00 PM Sydney time.  College football gets played around 12:00 PM local time I guess.

Watched all of last season from Africa which was the exact opposite since the time was 6 or 7 hours ahead (daylight savings changes it), so mostly 7 pm and 10 pm starts.  I actually kinda enjoyed the late night football along with many many beers, but Utah at 3:30 am and Minnesota at 2 am were a bit rough.

I loved the football schedule when I was living in California. College football gets going at 9 AM, then the late games weren't even that late. It made for a great day of football watching.

Agree.  After I graduated U-M, I lived in the Mountain TIme Zone for a few years.  Games kicked off at 10 AM, and the "prime time" games concluded around 8:00 - 8:30 pm.   That's a full day of college football, and still time to hit the bars.

After that, I lived in the UK for a year (2007) and I didn't watch a single college game.  Yeah, a good time to miss "The Horror."

A lot of people like early Michigan games to "get it out of the way" so they can do other stuff.

Not me.  A Michigan game in the fall is the highlight of my day.  I get the other stuff out of the way so I can focus on the Michigan game.

We only get 12 games a year in the fall for certain.  It's not something that I just want to get out of the way.
