Rutgers hires Houston receivers coach as Offensive Coordinator

Submitted by UMgradMSUdad on

Rutgers has hired Houston receivers coach Drew Mehringer as its new offensive coordinator, coach Chris Ash told SI.com on Sunday. Mehringer, 28, is considered one of the country’s sharp young offensive minds and the top protégé of Houston head coach Tom Herman.

“He’s the brightest young coach in America and is more than ready to run his own offense,” Herman said on Sunday.

Never understand this thought....Things go up, things go down, things go alllll arounddd.

Good hires at Rugters and Maryland are hardly a call to realignment.  What happens in 5 years when Durkins leaves for a Better job, PSU never really makes a come back, Ash cant handle Michigan PSU OSU stealing all the NJ recruits.  But we sent MSU and a hot hired Maryland to the West....

realignment again

Smart move. Rutgers realizing that if they're going to be stuck in a division with Meyer, Dantonio and Harbaugh, they'd better get the best coaches they can.

Ash will make them pretty solid defensively, and if this new guy is anything like Herman, Rutgers could actually be pretty darn good in the next few seasons.

Are you going to provide us with constant updates as Rutgers continues to fill out their coaching staff? I know most of us are waiting with baited breath.

every team we'll play against the BIG East now runs the spread save Sparty (I'm guessing with Penn State's hire of Moorehead that's their plan).  Honestly, I think this is a good thing. Since we play OSU last, we'll have lots of games to find the way against it.

There was an article on NJ.com (which has been all over Rutgers' hires, of course) that this particular addition probably means that you'll see Rutgers start transitioning to a lot more spread concepts, which probably wouldn't be too much of a stretch considering that Mehringer is coming from Houston. However, the fact that this guy isn't yet 30 (I am nearly 40) and is going to be an OC at a Power 5 program (I know, Rutgers) makes me again wonder what I've done with my life.

A school like Rutgers has very little to lose. Certainly won't lose anything by taking a chance on an unproven commodity like a young coach with a brill mind. If he doesn't turn out, then they are where they started. If he turns out a new and innovative offense, then they will be more attractive to the top talent that we are getting. Before you start making the claim that Michigan will never be challenged by Rutgers, remember there was a time when we would not have been challenged by MSU. Until they made a few smart hires and we didn't. Now half of that formula is not present currently (Harbaugh is a smart hire), but that's not to say that Rutgers can't improve itself quickly and maybe challenge for the in-state folks.

They're hiring like a MAC team. Mehringer is a position coach from a mid-major and gets hired as a coordinator at a Big Ten school. There's little downside for Mehringer here as even if he sucks, he at worst returns to the level he's come from. While of course this guy might be some kinda genius and it could turn out well, it's pretty indicative of how bad the Rutgers situation is that they have to take such a gamble on an entirely unproven guy.

with any hires. But tangible past achievements tend to help you with separating the wheat from the chaff. This kid has been a position coach for only a couple of years - at a mid-major level - and a GA only 3 years ago.

If Michigan hired this guy http://www.appstatesports.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=21500&ATCLID=205381196 to be our new DC, I'm sure that would be greeted enthusiastically by you and everyone else here.
