Rutgers hires Houston receivers coach as Offensive Coordinator
Rutgers has hired Houston receivers coach Drew Mehringer as its new offensive coordinator, coach Chris Ash told SI.com on Sunday. Mehringer, 28, is considered one of the country’s sharp young offensive minds and the top protégé of Houston head coach Tom Herman.
“He’s the brightest young coach in America and is more than ready to run his own offense,” Herman said on Sunday.

Never understand this thought....Things go up, things go down, things go alllll arounddd.
Good hires at Rugters and Maryland are hardly a call to realignment. What happens in 5 years when Durkins leaves for a Better job, PSU never really makes a come back, Ash cant handle Michigan PSU OSU stealing all the NJ recruits. But we sent MSU and a hot hired Maryland to the West....
realignment again

Or, Rutgers remains full of talentless hacks with a penchant for criminal behavior and the guy looks himself like an incompetent, leaves football and becomes a greeter at Walmart? I'd say the two outcomes are equally likely... :-D

Seems like a pretty good pick up for them. If he's truly an offensive genius, maybe Rutgers will be better sooner than expected.

Ash will make them pretty solid defensively, and if this new guy is anything like Herman, Rutgers could actually be pretty darn good in the next few seasons.

"We disagree" - B1G West ADs
I would hope that would be your rational but who knows with places like Illinois/Minnesota.

or he might commit to Maryland just to spite you. I sersiously have no idea why he's delaying comitting to Michigan.

If you don't want to be informed about what's going on with Michigan's conference opponents, then don't bother reading the OP in the first place.

Well said Don. Especially since this is in conference it does make it relevant.

every team we'll play against the BIG East now runs the spread save Sparty (I'm guessing with Penn State's hire of Moorehead that's their plan). Honestly, I think this is a good thing. Since we play OSU last, we'll have lots of games to find the way against it.

We played more than that. In the nonconference alone Utah, Oregon State, and UNLV were all spread teams.

There was an article on NJ.com (which has been all over Rutgers' hires, of course) that this particular addition probably means that you'll see Rutgers start transitioning to a lot more spread concepts, which probably wouldn't be too much of a stretch considering that Mehringer is coming from Houston. However, the fact that this guy isn't yet 30 (I am nearly 40) and is going to be an OC at a Power 5 program (I know, Rutgers) makes me again wonder what I've done with my life.

Don't feel bad. I am 20 yrs older than Harbaugh and haven't even been a head coach for one college team let alone the NFL.

They're hiring like a MAC team. Mehringer is a position coach from a mid-major and gets hired as a coordinator at a Big Ten school. There's little downside for Mehringer here as even if he sucks, he at worst returns to the level he's come from. While of course this guy might be some kinda genius and it could turn out well, it's pretty indicative of how bad the Rutgers situation is that they have to take such a gamble on an entirely unproven guy.

We took a proven guy and in his first year went 3-9.

with any hires. But tangible past achievements tend to help you with separating the wheat from the chaff. This kid has been a position coach for only a couple of years - at a mid-major level - and a GA only 3 years ago.
If Michigan hired this guy http://www.appstatesports.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=21500&ATCLID=205381196 to be our new DC, I'm sure that would be greeted enthusiastically by you and everyone else here.

I agree. It's one thing to hire a mid major OC for a B1G OC position, but a WR coach from a mid major reeks of desparation. I'm not sure where all the love is coming from.

I came for a LOL Rutgers thread...but no this is actually a pretty good hire.
