Rashan Gary's mom has a leader ... But she won't say who

Submitted by BlueInDallas on
I was just watching the interview with Rashan and his mom during UA practices. His mom first told a story about how Harbaugh was so impressed with the M food court during Rashan's visit that he left Rashan and his mom to go explore it. Rashan's mom thought that was funny and said she really likes Harbaugh. She then stressed over and over how much academics mean to her. Finally, they were asked if they had a leader. Rashan said no but he said he is down to 5 schools. Rashan's mom said it's really down to two schools and admitted that she has a leader but can't say who. Given her stance on academics and her clear comfort level with Harbaugh, it's clear to me she wants Rashan to go to Michigan. Rashan may still be debating between Michigan and one other school. Listen to your mom Rashan!

Nope they probably talked. Coaches can talk to recruits and their parents during the dead period. Ron Johnson said he talked to Brown right before the Holiday and the dead period started Dec. 14th.

What is a dead period? During a dead period a college coach may not have face-to-face contact with college-bound student-athletes or their parents, and may not watch student-athletes compete or visit their high schools. Coaches may write and telephone student-athletes or their parents during a dead period. http://www.ncaa.org/student-athletes/resources/recruiting-calendars

Mrs. Gary:

I applaud your persona, as portrayed in the media. (Pardon the qualification, but I have little faith in the accuracy of all of the entities that filter and process information).

If what I have read about you, and your son, is even close to approximating reality, I beleive your family would be welcome editions to the Michigan family.

Thank you for your efforts. I can't adequately express how delightful it is to hear the media portrayals of you, and your son's, emphasis on the quality of academics.

I earned two degrees at Michigan. I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to earn my second degrree at other institutions with even greater recognized reputations. But, as a Michigan resident, private programs carried a very high premium. I sought the advice of a family member who was a Michigan grad:

"Everywhere I go, all over the world, people know what the University of Michigan is, and what a degree from it means. My degrees open doors for me everywhere. Michigan is only equaled or exceeded by some Ivy League schools, Stanford or Notre Dame, depending on your area of interest. And, you run into more Michigan alumni in positions of impotance than any of those schools."

I've found what she said to be true.

I have realyed this out of respect for the media portaryal of your efforts as a Mother.

Best of luck to you and your son. You both seem truely blessed, and I'm sure the future is bright, regardleess of the path chosen.

are looking for is pointing toward Michigan - great foundation in football, education, and life.

I suspect that he may leave school before getting his degree - you have to make the right choice for your future at the time - but can always come back and finish his M degree.  ...Did Charles ever get his degree?  I suspect he will if he hasn't already.

A side benefit is that there will be plenty of carpool opportunities from Jersey for games given Peppers and our current class.  (Plus unless demographics have changed, there were a lot of Jersey/NYC students when I was in school in the late '80s)

Whatever happens with Mr. Gary, I wish him well in the future.  With a good support stucture at home he is primed for sucess in life.  At M with Harbaugh we are as well regardless of who is on the team....Everythng is coming up Millhouse!..err Harbaugh and Meeeeeechigan!!

If Harbaugh had been at M.  Not just for Harbaugh, but his belief that players should have the chance to pursue the degree they want.  Engineering is a tough enough degree to pursue as a normal student much less someone with a full-time "job" but there have been plenty who have proven it is possible.  Hoke was very "Old School" in the way that Harbaugh expessed his discontent with while at Stanford.

I hope DeShawn does well at 'Bama (after some distance from the disappointment) and am surprised he hasn't seen more PT as of yet.  I suspect he would have started as the WDE this year (scrapping the Buck to get the best 4 on the field) and maybe as a Frosh.  He can still make many Michigan fans happy by sacking Cook multiple times tomorrow.

PS - Anyone else wistful watching USC with Smith, Cravens et. al. and thinking what could have been?

.....no matter how these battles end, I think all of the Alumni must love that UofM is the school that moms who care about education want their sons to play for.

You Go Momma!

I don't like any recruit visiting USC that late and/or being down to us and Auburn (for obvious historical reasons) at the end. Why couldn't it be Michigan or Southern Illinois?

wow why you throwing southern IL under the bus? I was born and raised there. Then I moved up to god's country but come on. The football and basketball was really good there when I was growing up. SIU went to a sweet 16. Rage....

Both Rashan and Mom have well made up their minds and are using the rest of the time to see if any other school could prove them wrong. With Harbough on top of all great things Michigan, it will be tough for the rest to compete..

I have a little hunch. I think Gary is a silent commit here. I've been thinking this for awhile now. Just guessing that recruiting sites have maybe even asked him to keep his commentment quiet until signing day. Kind of a big deal to have the number 1 player commit on that day. I know people here aren't feeling good with the sec and now USC knocking on his door daily. But this kid is coming here and I wouldn't be surprised if he has already made it clear to his NJ soon to be teammates and the Michigan staff. But let them know it's hush hush until signing day.

by he and his mother?  she said it's down to 2, and one of those is leading and she meant it otherwise both his and her comment at that time would be a lie, not just coy.  and i'll add that i think that woman is tremendous and i'd doubt she'd lie about anything.   guessing they have choice A and choice A+ and if forced to pick they/he could do so but is/are letting the process play itself out.
