OT-ish: Melton and in-state Martinez to OSU

Submitted by Magnus on July 4th, 2019 at 10:15 AM

Muskegon wide receiver/defensive back Cameron Martinez and Maryland linebacker Mitchell Melton both committed to Ohio State. Martinez is #8 in the state and #370 overall. He was the Player of the Year in Michigan. Melton is #656 overall and took an official to Michigan; he's a teammate of Kris Jenkins, Jr., who obviously just committed to us.

Both of them were 100% crystal balled to OSU, so these aren't surprises.

Lots of people on this board need a reality check. Man up Mgoblog. You might not like what Hammer66 is laying down but you have to realize why he can say this stuff and he isn't wrong.

You are cut from a different cloth than most of the posters on this board. I saw that right away when you signed on four months ago. Keep it up Peach. We need more studs like you on here. I’m guessing you’re not afraid to get your hands dirty. Not afraid to take the gloves off to get a better grip on the old rebar amiright?

Yeah, not surprised but I hate seeing Martinez going there.  Hopefully this means Paige gets pushed out of their class and comes to UM, although he may get pushed out of ours too if Moten and/or Greene commit first.

I think you answered your own question. If Michigan is waiting on Greene and Moten first, I think Paige probably doesnt have a committable offer. Pretty sure Magnus (maybe someone else?) mentioned that Paige is not a priority for the staff right now and hasn't been for a bit.

Take it easy on us Hammer66. Many on this board are confused. They think I'm a troll. I want Michigan and Ohio both be undefeated when they play each other every year. Winner take all and go on to win NC. But for many on this board that is too much to handle. It's tough to be a man baby. Man up Mgoblog. Harbaugh needs to toughen this team up. And start winning Big Ten Championships and NC's.

Not to be Bpone but it’s either Martinez wasn’t that interested so we “cooled” on him OR our staff is not imaginative enough to find a way to find our “Mr Football”  as a junior a role in our offense or defense.    This is not a good look for us at all.

I like Martinez as a recruit, but I like who we got instead. Seems like we just filled up at both positions and will just take one more outside receiver.

Agree !  And this is not sour grapes but I think both Martinez and Melton get lost in the shuffle at OSU.  I like our guys better .

The one OSU recruit I'm going to be interested in following the next couple of years is Melton. Both OSU and Michigan recruited the kid but OSU went after and wanted the kid badly if you read their boards. We offered but didn't go after him near as hard. His offer list was OK and he was rated at 0.8668 on the 247 Composite (3-star) - one of their lowest rated recruit -  yet Mattison loved the kid. I think he would have been better at a school like home state school Maryland. Just seems like an OSU backup plan.

Have you really looked at their class?  Very likely it will finish #2 behind Clemson

They are pulling elites from everywhere. 3 out of state WRs who just finished 1-2-3 at the opening, might be all three end up w/5*’s and they’re closing in on a 4* WR from MO. Have a top 3 QB from AZ. High 4*s from NJ, CA, TX and appear to be close to landing a 5* RB from AZ

we’re kidding ourselves if we think there is a change to the level of recruiting Meyer was doing. If anything it’s intensified.

How do you figure they will finish #2 after Clemson?  OSU is probably headed for the #5 class after Clemson and the 3 $EC powers...  Look at the average ranking and number of spots left per team.

Michigan will likely finish between 6 - 10th at the end of the cycle give or take how the season turns out!

Look at the 247 ratings, not the composite ratings.  ESPN and Rivals often lag behind 247 in adjusting their ratings.  OSU has nine players that are 3* in the composite, but only five (one of whom is a kicker) that are 3* in the 247 rankings.  It's reasonable to predict that they will have fewer than nine 3*s when all is said and done-- and that's not even taking into account the possibility of them processing one of the mid 3* Ohio OL recruits that had everyone so puzzled, as presumably their offers were accepted contingent on them meeting some improvement goals in their senior seasons.

I think there are objective reasons to believe that Michigan's 2019 recruiting class is better than it's currently rated, and I would not be surprised if the average player rating is pushing 91 by signing day, instead of 90 right now (and a single point is a substantial increase).  But by the same token, I think there are objective reasons to suspect that Ohio State's class will see more than one or two 3*s get a bump, probably sooner rather than later.  I don't think a #2 or #3 finish is all that unlikely; it probably depends on them getting Bijan Robinson and flipping Ricks from LSU.

The obvious hole in your theory is that you assume that Alabama, Georgia and LSU stop recruiting top prospects.  Pretty sure Nick Satan, Da Coach O and the Georgia bag men aren't going on a collective recruiting strike over the next 6 months.

Your comment also assumes that only OSU commits get bumps in their ratings and that no OSU commits ever get bumped down.

Not saying that OSU can't finish 2nd, just saying that the numbers currently project to them finishing 4th or 5th.  To be honest, the rankings are only relevant as a general guide and that the top 5 or so classes are pretty much interchangeable.  It is not an exact science so over-analyzing minute point differences is pretty stupid.

Why not?  He's got the same crootin' apparatus that Meyer set up, and the same source of, ahem, program support.  As long as he wins on the field, he'll be supported as well as Meyer ever was.  Right now, he's living on their offensive performance last year - and that's plenty enough to buy him support for the time being...
